Perceptions about dating violence among community college student leaders
Abstract Perceptions About Dating Violence Among Community College Student Leaders By Keyla Decos Master of Social Work Dating violence is a serious public health and safety problem in colleges and universities. Due to its prevalence, many universities and colleges across the nation have started to implement programs for the prevention and intervention of dating violence. Dating violence can have serious implications in students' health that can affect their academic success. College students who experience dating violence are at higher risk to develop depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress. Studies have demonstrated that students who experience dating violence usually disclose it to peers and friends, but oftentimes their peers do not have the necessary skills to be able to help them. This was an exploratory study, which used a convenient sample comprised of 53 student leaders from an urban community college. Most of the participants were second year students, they were mostly females (n = 24) and males (n = 27), between the ages of 18 through 27 years old, mostly heterosexual, White and Hispanic/Latino. The participants held leadership roles as course-embedded tutors and lead peer mentors on campus. This study measured their perceptions and knowledge about dating violence. To measure these two variables (perceptions and knowledge), the researcher used two questionnaires that were previously used by Khubchandani et al (2012) to assess high school counselors' knowledge, training, perceptions, and practices on dealing with dating violence. To fit with this current study, the researcher made one modification to the perceptions' questionnaire. The modification consisted of changing the words "school counselors" to "student leaders." Descriptive and frequency statistics were calculated and measured participants' perceptions and knowledge about dating violence. Statistical findings suggested that participants were willing to help in the prevention and intervention of dating violence in the community college by learning strategies in the prevention and intervention of dating violence. However, statistical findings demonstrated that participants significantly lacked knowledge about what constitutes dating violence. This study also included a short questionnaire with demographical questions that analyzed gender differences between females and males' scores from bot questionnaires. Independent sample t-tests were calculated and findings demonstrated that there were no statistical gender differences between participants for neither the perceptions questionnaire nor the knowledge questionnaire about dating violence. Opportunity for banks to utilize gamification as a tool to promote financial education to children
This thesis has several objectives: to investigate how banks benefit from promoting financial education for children via gamified solutions, to investigate how customers perceive banks that promote financial education as well as to understand the general opinion regarding financial education for both adults and children. The research portrays bank and customers’ points of view.
To meet these objectives, a mixed-method research model has been adopted. In order to collect qualitative and quantitative data the researcher has conducted a set of interviews and has distributed 88 surveys.
This thesis touches on financial literacy, the banking sector and gamification as three main areas of the research. In the first part of the thesis the researcher presents a rigorous analysis of the existing theories on these topics. An extended primary data analysis is presented in the second part of the research and provides a deep overview of how these areas interrelate leading to the conclusion of the thesis.
The findings of the research suggest that there is a tremendous need for financial education among both adults and children. Since this need is not fully addressed by the government organizations it allows third party providers (in this case banks) to seize opportunity and benefits of being “first to market”. However interacting with children may be challenging and new approaches should be elaborated. The researcher presents a gamified solution developed for ING bank that illustrates all the principles of gamification as well as bank’s reasons to invest in this solution. Interviews and surveys of the potential customers support the hypothesis that utilizing gamification as a tool to deliver financial education to children can benefit both adults and banks
