Kinetics of aerobic biodegradation of benzene and toluene in sandy aquifer material
Monod's equation adequately described aerobic biodegradation rates of benzene and toluene by the microbial population of a sandy aquifer when these compounds were initially present at concentrations lower than 100 mg/l each. Concentrations higher than 100 mg/l were inhibitory, and no benzene or toluene degradation was observed when these compounds were initially present at 250 mg/l each. The Monod coefficients were calculated as k = 8.3 g-benzene/g-cells/day and Ks = 12.2 mg/l for benzene, and k = 9.9 g-toluene/g-cells/day and Ks = 17.4 mg/l for toluene. Shaping the oral microbiota through intimate kissing
Background: The variation of microbial communities associated with the human body can be the cause of many factors, including the human genetic makeup, diet, age, surroundings, and sexual behavior. In this study, we investigated the effects of intimate kissing on the oral microbiota of 21 couples by self-administered questionnaires about their past kissing behavior and by the evaluation of tongue and salivary microbiota samples in a controlled kissing experiment. In addition, we quantified the number of bacteria exchanged during intimate kissing by the use of marker bacteria introduced through the intake of a probiotic yoghurt drink by one of the partners prior to a second intimate kiss.Results: Similarity indices of microbial communities show that average partners have a more similar oral microbiota composition compared to unrelated individuals, with by far most pronounced similarity for communities associated with the tongue surface. An intimate kiss did not lead to a significant additional increase of the average similarity of the oral microbiota between partners. However, clear correlations were observed between the similarity indices of the salivary microbiota of couples and self-reported kiss frequencies, and the reported time passed after the latest kiss. In control experiments for bacterial transfer, we identified the probiotic Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium marker bacteria in most kiss receivers, corresponding to an average total bacterial transfer of 80 million bacteria per intimate kiss of 10 s.Conclusions: This study indicates that a shared salivary microbiota requires a frequent and recent bacterial exchange and is therefore most pronounced in couples with relatively high intimate kiss frequencies. The microbiota on the dorsal surface of the tongue is more similar among partners than unrelated individuals, but its similarity does not clearly correlate to kissing behavior, suggesting an important role for specific selection mechanisms resulting from a shared lifestyle, environment, or genetic factors from the host. Furthermore, our findings imply that some of the collective bacteria among partners are only transiently present, while others have found a true niche on the tongue's surface allowing long-term colonization

Composition Influences the Pathway but not the Outcome of the Metabolic Response of Bacterioplankton to Resource Shifts
Bacterioplankton community metabolism is central to the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, and strongly reactive to changes in the environment, yet the processes underlying this response remain unclear. Here we explore the role that community composition plays in shaping the bacterial metabolic response to resource gradients that occur along aquatic ecotones in a complex watershed in Québec. Our results show that the response is mediated by complex shifts in community structure, and structural equation analysis confirmed two main pathways, one involving adjustments in the level of activity of existing phylotypes, and the other the replacement of the dominant phylotypes. These contrasting response pathways were not determined by the type or the intensity of the gradients involved, as we had hypothesized, but rather it would appear that some compositional configurations may be intrinsically more plastic than others. Our results suggest that community composition determines this overall level of community plasticity, but that composition itself may be driven by factors independent of the environmental gradients themselves, such that the response of bacterial communities to a given type of gradient may alternate between the adjustment and replacement pathways. We conclude that community composition influences the pathways of response in these bacterial communities, but not the metabolic outcome itself, which is driven by the environment, and which can be attained through multiple alternative configurations

The future, and what might have been
We show that five important elements of the ‘nomological package’— laws, counterfactuals, chances, dispositions, and counterfactuals—needn’t be a problem for the Growing-Block view. We begin with the framework given in Briggsand Forbes (in The real truth about the unreal future. Oxford studies in metaphysics. Oxford University Press, Oxford,2012), and, taking laws as primitive, we show that the Growing-Block view has the resources to provide an account of possibility, and a natural semantics for non-backtracking causal counterfactuals. We show how objective chances might ground a more fine-grained concept of feasibility, and furnished a places in the structure where causation and dispositions might fit. The Growing-Block view, thus understood, provides the resources to explain the close link between modality and tense, so that it predicts modal change as time passes.This account lets us capture not only what the future might hold for us, and also what might have been
Context, cognition and communication in language
Questions pertaining to the unique structure and organisation of language have a
long history in the field of linguistics. In recent years, researchers have explored
cultural evolutionary explanations, showing how language structure emerges from
weak biases amplified over repeated patterns of learning and use. One outstanding
issue in these frameworks is accounting for the role of context. In particular,
many linguistic phenomena are said to to be context-dependent; interpretation
does not take place in a void, and requires enrichment from the current state
of the conversation, the physical situation, and common knowledge about the
world. Modelling the relationship between language structure and context is
therefore crucial for developing a cultural evolutionary approach to language.
One approach is to use statistical analyses to investigate large-scale, cross-cultural
datasets. However, due to the inherent limitations of statistical analyses, especially
with regards to the inadequacy of these methods to test hypotheses about
causal relationships, I argue that experiments are better suited to address questions
pertaining to language structure and context. From here, I present a series
of artificial language experiments, with the central aim being to test how
manipulations to context influence the structure and organisation of language.
Experiment 1 builds upon previous work in iterated learning and communication
games through demonstrating that the emergence of optimal communication systems
is contingent on the contexts in which languages are learned and used. The
results show that language systems gradually evolve to only encode information
that is informative for conveying the intended meaning of the speaker - resulting
in markedly different systems of communication. Whereas Experiment 1 focused
on how context influences the emergence of structure, Experiments 2 and 3 investigate
under what circumstances do manipulations to context result in the loss
of structure. While the results are inconclusive across these two experiments,
there is tentative evidence that manipulations to context can disrupt structure,
but only when interacting with other factors. Lastly, Experiment 4 investigates
whether the degree of signal autonomy (the capacity for a signal to be interpreted without recourse to contextual information) is shaped by manipulations
to contextual predictability: the extent to which a speaker can estimate and exploit
contextual information a hearer uses in interpreting an utterance. When
the context is predictable, speakers organise languages to be less autonomous
(more context-dependent) through combining linguistic signals with contextual
information to reduce effort in production and minimise uncertainty in comprehension.
By decreasing contextual predictability, speakers increasingly rely on
strategies that promote more autonomous signals, as these signals depend less on
contextual information to discriminate between possible meanings. Overall, these
experiments provide proof-of-concept for investigating the relationship between
language structure and context, showing that the organisational principles underpinning
language are the result of competing pressures from context, cognition,
and communication
