    Influence of realistic wearing on the morphology and release of silver nanomaterials from textiles

    Full text link
    The recent commercialisation of antimicrobial textiles has resulted in concern regarding the incidental release of silver nanomaterials (Ag-NMs) to the environment. To date, studies have measured Ag-NMs released from unworn textiles under simulated conditions, but little is known of Ag-NMs released under actual wearing conditions. Our experiments were conducted for three cycles of wearing and washing, where the textiles (socks) were worn for a similar distance under walking or running scenarios. The effect of wearing was assessed through characterization of both the fibres and the Ag-NMs released into the wash water. Ag released into the wash water was ∼2-3× higher for the running and walking trial respectively compared to the unworn control during the 1st cycle. Silver releases in the 2nd and 3rd cycles were similar for the walking trial and the unworn control, but lower for the running trial. A 29% decrease in silver content was observed on the socks used for walking after the 3rd cycle. Silver in the wash water was mainly particulates (≥92%; particles >1-2 nm) and wearing created a higher number of smaller sized particles (∼50 to 100 nm). Imaging of the Ag-NMs revealed that 54% of the particles surveyed were micrometer size silver sheet-like structures, but with an estimated thickness of only 67 ± 56 nm. This data set can serve as a reference for the development of artificial wearing methodologies into the future. The Ag-NM sheet-like structures identified here require further study as their fate, transport and toxicological properties will be different to those of their pristine and/or spherical counterparts

    Search for rare quark-annihilation decays, B --> Ds(*) Phi

    Full text link
    We report on searches for B- --> Ds- Phi and B- --> Ds*- Phi. In the context of the Standard Model, these decays are expected to be highly suppressed since they proceed through annihilation of the b and u-bar quarks in the B- meson. Our results are based on 234 million Upsilon(4S) --> B Bbar decays collected with the BABAR detector at SLAC. We find no evidence for these decays, and we set Bayesian 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions BF(B- --> Ds- Phi) Ds*- Phi)<1.2x10^(-5). These results are consistent with Standard Model expectations.Comment: 8 pages, 3 postscript figues, submitted to Phys. Rev. D (Rapid Communications

    The consumer scam: an agency-theoretic approach

    Despite the extensive body of literature that aims to explain the phenomenon of consumer scams, the structure of information in scam relationships remains relatively understudied. The purpose of this article is to develop an agency-theoretical approach to the study of information in perpetrator-victim interactions. Drawing a distinction between failures of observation and failures of judgement in the pre-contract phase, we introduce a typology and a set of propositions that explain the severity of adverse selection problems in three classes of scam relationships. Our analysis provides a novel, systematic explanation of the structure of information that facilitates scam victimisation, while also enabling critical scrutiny of a core assumption in agency theory regarding contract design. We highlight the role of scam perpetrators as agents who have access to private information and exercise considerable control over the terms and design of scam relationships. Focusing on the consumer scam context, we question a theoretical assumption, largely taken for granted in the agency literature, that contact design is necessarily in the purview of the uninformed principal

    Measurement of the branching fraction for BD0KB^- \to D^0 K^{*-}

    Get PDF
    We present a measurement of the branching fraction for the decay B- --> D0 K*- using a sample of approximately 86 million BBbar pairs collected by the BaBar detector from e+e- collisions near the Y(4S) resonance. The D0 is detected through its decays to K- pi+, K- pi+ pi0 and K- pi+ pi- pi+, and the K*- through its decay to K0S pi-. We measure the branching fraction to be B.F.(B- --> D0 K*-)= (6.3 +/- 0.7(stat.) +/- 0.5(syst.)) x 10^{-4}

    Observation of a significant excess of π0π0\pi^{0}\pi^{0} events in B meson decays

    We present an observation of the decay B0π0π0B^{0} \to \pi^{0} \pi^{0} based on a sample of 124 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy BB Factory at SLAC. We observe 46±13±346 \pm 13 \pm 3 events, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic, corresponding to a significance of 4.2 standard deviations including systematic uncertainties. We measure the branching fraction \BR(B^{0} \to \pi^{0} \pi^{0}) = (2.1 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{-6}, averaged over B0B^{0} and Bˉ0\bar{B}^{0} decays

    Hackathons as a means of accelerating scientific discoveries and knowledge transfer

    Get PDF
    Scientific research plays a key role in the advancement of human knowledge and pursuit of solutions to important societal challenges. Typically, research occurs within specific institutions where data are generated and subsequently analyzed. Although collaborative science bringing together multiple institutions is now common, in such collaborations the analytical processing of the data is often performed by individual researchers within the team, with only limited internal oversight and critical analysis of the workflow prior to publication. Here, we show how hackathons can be a means of enhancing collaborative science by enabling peer review before results of analyses are published by cross-validating the design of studies or underlying data sets and by driving reproducibility of scientific analyses. Traditionally, in data analysis processes, data generators and bioinformaticians are divided and do not collaborate on analyzing the data. Hackathons are a good strategy to build bridges over the traditional divide and are potentially a great agile extension to the more structured collaborations between multiple investigators and institutions

    Immunogenicity and Efficacy of Single Antigen Gp63, Polytope and PolytopeHSP70 DNA Vaccines against Visceral Leishmaniasis in Experimental Mouse Model

    Polytope approach of genetic immunization is a promising strategy for the prevention of infectious disease as it is capable of generating effective cell mediated immunity by delivering the T cell epitopes assembled in series. Leishmaniasis is a significant world wide health problem for which no vaccine exists. In this study we have compared immunogenicity and efficacy of three types of DNA vaccines: single antigen Gp63 (Gp63/pcDNA), polytope (Poly/pcDNA) and Polytope fused with hsp70 (Poly/hsp/pcDNA) against visceral leishmaniasis in susceptible BALB/c mice. Mice vaccinated with these plasmids generated strong Th1 immune response as seen by dominating IFN-γ over IL-10 cytokine. Interestingly, cytotoxic responses generated by polytope DNA plasmid fused with hsp70 of Leishmania donovani were significantly higher when compared to polytope and single antigen Gp63 vaccine. Challenge studies revealed that the parasite load in liver and spleen was significantly lower with Poly/hsp/pcDNA vaccination compared to other vaccines. Therefore, our study indicates that polytope DNA vaccine is a feasible, practical and effective approach for visceral leishmaniasis
