Validation of the AX3 triaxial accelerometer in older functionally impaired people
Background: Studying physical activity (PA) trends in older populations and potential interventions for increasing PA is important, as PA is a factor in many age-related health outcomes such as chronic disease, premature mortality, physical function, and injuries from falls[1]. Objective measures of PA provide valuable information regarding the functional impact that ageing and chronic disease states may have on a patient’s life. Aims: The purpose of this study was to test the validity of the AX3 PA monitor in an older population, to investigate if the AX3 is a valid measure of distinct types or levels of activity in older people with a spectrum of mobility. Methods: Validity of the AX3 PA monitor was tested using the RT3 as a means of cross validating the AX3. Study participants wore both the AX3 and the RT3 accelerometers, positioned on their non-dominant side, while completing a series of standardised everyday activities. Results: Although overall correlation was high (r>0.8) between the RT3 and lower-limb mounted AX3 counts, the correlation between the two devices was much stronger for walking activity than for any of the non-walking activities. Discussion: Activity counts at all lower limb positions for the AX3 and RT3 were highly correlated. Correlation between wrist-mounted AX3 counts and lower limb AX3 counts was only moderate, and worsened when walking aids were in use. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that the AX3 monitor is a valid tool, which might be used to objectively measure walking activity in older, functionally impaired adults; a welcome finding for this under-researched area
Association Between Perceived Department Chair Leadership Characteristics and Faculty Job Satisfaction
Low faculty job satisfaction observed in higher education institutions can result in high rates of turnover and lack of commitment. With limited research on department chair leadership and faculty job satisfaction, there is also a gap in research in small liberal arts college settings. Guided by Avolio and Bass’s full-range leadership model, the purpose of this study was to examine the association between faculty perceptions of department chair leadership characteristics and faculty job satisfaction at 3 small, liberal arts institutions in the southeastern United States. For this nonexperimental study, the college’s self-developed Adapted Employee Satisfaction Survey was distributed to 720 faculty of whom 526 responded for a response rate of 73%. The Pearson chi-square test for independence with Cramer’s V was conducted and indicated that while 65% felt satisfied with their job, only the perceived department chair leadership characteristic of comfort with feedback by department chair was moderately to strongly associated with faculty job satisfaction (V = .44). Allowance of honest expression (V = .37) had a moderate association, whereas the remaining 5 characteristics had significant associations with faculty job satisfaction but with small effect sizes: being respected by their department chair (V = .24), department chairs caring about their well-being (V = .21), confidence in leadership (V = .17), adequate communication (V = .15), and openness to input from faculty (V = .15). These findings may contribute to social change by giving insight into improving faculty’s job satisfaction, which may lead to better teaching, benefitting students’ academic experiences, and the college’s overall reputation

Published onlineJournal ArticleResearch Support, Non-U.S. Gov'tBACKGROUND: The whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum is an economically important crop pest in temperate regions that has developed resistance to most classes of insecticides. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance have not been characterised and, to date, progress has been hampered by a lack of nucleotide sequence data for this species. Here, we use pyrosequencing on the Roche 454-FLX platform to produce a substantial and annotated EST dataset. This 'unigene set' will form a critical reference point for quantitation of over-expressed messages via digital transcriptomics. RESULTS: Pyrosequencing produced around a million sequencing reads that assembled into 54,748 contigs, with an average length of 965 bp, representing a dramatic expansion of existing cDNA sequences available for T. vaporariorum (only 43 entries in GenBank at the time of this publication). BLAST searching of non-redundant databases returned 20,333 significant matches and those gene families potentially encoding gene products involved in insecticide resistance were manually curated and annotated. These include, enzymes potentially involved in the detoxification of xenobiotics and those encoding the targets of the major chemical classes of insecticides. A total of 57 P450s, 17 GSTs and 27 CCEs were identified along with 30 contigs encoding the target proteins of six different insecticide classes. CONCLUSION: Here, we have developed new transcriptomic resources for T. vaporariorum. These include a substantial and annotated EST dataset that will serve the community studying this important crop pest and will elucidate further the molecular mechanisms underlying insecticide resistance.CASE PhD studentship BBSRCBayer CropScienceRothamsted Researc
Energy cost and return for hunting in African wild dogs and Cheetahs
African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) are reported to hunt with energetically costly long chase distances. We used high-resolution GPS and inertial technology to record 1,119 high-speed chases of all members of a pack of six adult African wild dogs in northern Botswana. Dogs performed multiple short, high-speed, mostly unsuccessful chases to capture prey, while cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) undertook even shorter, higher-speed hunts. We used an energy balance model to show that the energy return from group hunting and feeding substantially outweighs the cost of multiple short chases, which indicates that African wild dogs are more energetically robust than previously believed. Comparison with cheetah illustrates the trade-off between sheer athleticism and high individual kill rate characteristic of cheetahs, and the energetic robustness of frequent opportunistic group hunting and feeding by African wild dogs
Digital Co-creation for Sustainable Tourism
This project integrated digital education and sustainability literacy in tourism modules, combining classroom-based learning with community engagement in Chapelizod village and Phoenix Park. Thirty-five students explored how digital tools can communicate biodiversity, heritage, and climate issues to visitors. To introduce immersive technology, students first experienced global heritage through Virtual Reality: three Meta Quest 3 VR headsets were used to take students on a virtual tour of Machu Picchu, providing a benchmark for considering how VR can enhance interpretation and visitor experience. Building on this, students worked in groups with local partners to design QR code–enabled walking tours using Fectar, covering themes such as biodiversity, social and cultural history, and heritage-literary trails. These outputs could be viewed on mobile devices or through the VR headsets, allowing comparison between global exemplars and locally co-created experiences
Childbearing postponement and child well-being: a complex and varied relationship?
Over the past several decades, U.S. fertility has followed a trend toward the postponement of motherhood. The socioeconomic causes and consequences of this trend have been the focus of attention in the demographic literature. Given the socioeconomic advantages of those who postpone having children, some authors have argued that the disadvantage experienced by certain groups would be reduced if they postponed their births. The weathering hypothesis literature, by integrating a biosocial perspective, complicates this argument and posits that the costs and benefits of postponement may vary systematically across population subgroups. In particular, the literature on the weathering hypothesis argues that as a consequence of their unique experiences of racism and disadvantage, African American women may experience a more rapid deterioration of their health, which could offset or eventually reverse any socioeconomic benefit of postponement. But because very few African American women postpone motherhood, efforts to find compelling evidence to support the arguments of this perspective rely on a strategy of comparison that is problematic because a potentially selected group of older black mothers are used to represent the costs of postponement. This might explain why the weathering hypothesis has played a rather limited role in the way demographers conceptualize postponement and its consequences for well-being. In order to explore the potential utility of this perspective, we turn our attention to the UK context. Because first-birth fertility schedules are similar for black and white women, we can observe (rather than assume) whether the meaning and consequences of postponement vary across these population subgroups. The results, obtained using linked UK census and birth record data, reveal evidence consistent with the weathering hypothesis in the United Kingdom and lend support to the arguments that the demographic literature would benefit from integrating insights from this biosocial perspective

Exploring the pastiche hegemony of men
In this article I explore the continued hegemony of certain men. I use interview extracts to help think through the notion of pastiche hegemony as a means of understanding how men, and narratives about them, have changed, but unequal power relations persist. In particular, I explore this process within men’s understandings of how they were able to gain and maintain influence and power at work. Through their reflexive reading of the changing shape of late modern Western society, these men believed they were able to craft selves and employ social scripts to produce social influence and power in situational and contingent forms. I argue that it is within this interactional process that the increasingly undermined ideological and material legacy of patriarchy might still be reified. As such, while there is clear evidence highlighting the undermining of men’s ability to assume power, within this article I theoretically unpack how certain men might be able to produce a localized, pastiche hegemony. Uranium bioprecipitation mediated by yeasts utilizing organic phosphorus substrates
In this research, we have demonstrated the ability of several yeast species to mediate U(VI) biomineralization through uranium phosphate biomineral formation when utilizing an organic source of phosphorus (glycerol 2-phosphate disodium salt hydrate (C3H7Na2O6P·xH2O (G2P)) or phytic acid sodium salt hydrate (C6H18O24P6·xNa+·yH2O (PyA))) in the presence of soluble UO2(NO3)2. The formation of meta-ankoleite (K2(UO2)2(PO4)2·6(H2O)), chernikovite ((H3O)2(UO2)2(PO4)2·6(H2O)), bassetite (Fe++(UO2)2(PO4)2·8(H2O)), and uramphite ((NH4)(UO2)(PO4)·3(H2O)) on cell surfaces was confirmed by X-ray diffraction in yeasts grown in a defined liquid medium amended with uranium and an organic phosphorus source, as well as in yeasts pre-grown in organic phosphorus-containing media and then subsequently exposed to UO2(NO3)2. The resulting minerals depended on the yeast species as well as physico-chemical conditions. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that phosphatase-mediated uranium biomineralization can occur in yeasts supplied with an organic phosphate substrate as sole source of phosphorus. Further understanding of yeast interactions with uranium may be relevant to development of potential treatment methods for uranium waste and utilization of organic phosphate sources and for prediction of microbial impacts on the fate of uranium in the environment.</p
