Computability of ordinary differential equations
In this paper we provide a brief review of several results about the
computability of initial-value problems (IVPs) defined with ordinary differential
equations (ODEs). We will consider a variety of settings and analyze
how the computability of the IVP will be affected. Computational
complexity results will also be presented, as well as computable versions

Sensory Electrical Stimulation Improves Foot Placement during Targeted Stepping Post-Stroke
Proper foot placement is vital for maintaining balance during walking, requiring the integration of multiple sensory signals with motor commands. Disruption of brain structures post-stroke likely alters the processing of sensory information by motor centers, interfering with precision control of foot placement and walking function for stroke survivors. In this study, we examined whether somatosensory stimulation, which improves functional movements of the paretic hand, could be used to improve foot placement of the paretic limb. Foot placement was evaluated before, during, and after application of somatosensory electrical stimulation to the paretic foot during a targeted stepping task. Starting from standing, twelve chronic stroke participants initiated movement with the non-paretic limb and stepped to one of five target locations projected onto the floor with distances normalized to the paretic stride length. Targeting error and lower extremity kinematics were used to assess changes in foot placement and limb control due to somatosensory stimulation. Significant reductions in placement error in the medial–lateral direction (p = 0.008) were observed during the stimulation and post-stimulation blocks. Seven participants, presenting with a hip circumduction walking pattern, had reductions (p = 0.008) in the magnitude and duration of hip abduction during swing with somatosensory stimulation. Reductions in circumduction correlated with both functional and clinical measures, with larger improvements observed in participants with greater impairment. The results of this study suggest that somatosensory stimulation of the paretic foot applied during movement can improve the precision control of foot placement
Classification of non-Riemannian doubled-yet-gauged spacetime
Assuming covariant fields as the `fundamental' variables,
Double Field Theory can accommodate novel geometries where a Riemannian metric
cannot be defined, even locally. Here we present a complete classification of
such non-Riemannian spacetimes in terms of two non-negative integers,
, . Upon these backgrounds, strings become
chiral and anti-chiral over and directions respectively, while
particles and strings are frozen over the directions. In
particular, we identify as Riemannian manifolds, as
non-relativistic spacetime, as Gomis-Ooguri non-relativistic string,
as ultra-relativistic Carroll geometry, and as Siegel's
chiral string. Combined with a covariant Kaluza-Klein ansatz which we further
spell, leads to Newton-Cartan gravity. Alternative to the conventional
string compactifications on small manifolds, non-Riemannian spacetime such as
, may open a new scheme of the dimensional reduction from ten to

Room temperature near-ultraviolet emission from In-rich InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells
We grew In-rich InGaNGaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) using growth interruption (GI) by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The quality of overgrown InGaNGaN QW layers in MQWs was largely affected by the crystalline quality and interfacial abruptness of the underlying QW layer. Introduction of 10 s GI was very effective in improving the crystalline quality and interfacial abruptness of InGaN QW layers, and we grew a ten periods of 1-nm -thick In-rich InGaNGaN MQW with 10 s GI and obtained a strong near-ultraviolet (UV) emission (~390 nm) at room temperature. We believe that use of less than 1-nm -thick In-rich InGaN MQW can be a candidate for near-UV source, which might replace the conventional low-indium content (<10%), thicker InGaN QW layer.open313
Family Planning Decisions, Perceptions and Gender Dynamics among Couples in Mwanza, Tanzania: A Qualitative Study.
Contraceptive use is low in developing countries which are still largely driven by male dominated culture and patriarchal values. This study explored family planning (FP) decisions, perceptions and gender dynamics among couples in Mwanza region of Tanzania. Twelve focus group discussions and six in-depth interviews were used to collect information from married or cohabiting males and females aged 18-49. The participants were purposively selected. Qualitative methods were used to explore family planning decisions, perceptions and gender dynamics among couples. A guide with questions related to family planning perceptions, decisions and gender dynamics was used. The discussions and interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed manually and subjected to content analysis. Four themes emerged during the study. First, "risks and costs" which refer to the side effects of FP methods and the treatment of side -effects as well as the costs inherit in being labeled as an unfaithful spouse. Second, "male involvement" as men showed little interest in participating in family planning issues. However, the same men were mentioned as key decision-makers even on the number of children a couple should have and the child spacing of these children. Third, "gender relations and communication" as participants indicated that few women participated in decision-making on family planning and the number of children to have. Fourth, "urban-rural differences", life in rural favoring having more children than urban areas therefore, the value of children depended on the place of residence. Family Planning programs should adapt the promotion of communication as well as joint decision-making on FP among couples as a strategy aimed at enhancing FP use
A Survey on Continuous Time Computations
We provide an overview of theories of continuous time computation. These
theories allow us to understand both the hardness of questions related to
continuous time dynamical systems and the computational power of continuous
time analog models. We survey the existing models, summarizing results, and
point to relevant references in the literature
Histological Review of Skin cancers in African Albinos: A 10-year Retrospective Review.
Skin cancer is rare among Africans and albinism is an established risk for skin cancer in this population. Ultraviolet radiation is highest at the equator and African albinos living close to the equator have the highest risk of developing skin cancers. This was a retrospective study that involved histological review of all specimens with skin cancers from African albinos submitted to The Regional Dermatology Training Center in Moshi, Tanzania from 2002 to 2011. A total of 134 biopsies from 86 patients with a male to female ratio of 1:1 were reviewed. Head and neck was the commonest (n = 75, 56.0%) site affected by skin cancers. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) was more common than basal cell carcinoma (BCC) with a ratio of 1.2:1. Only one Acral lentiginous melanoma was reported. Majority (55.6%) of SCC were well differentiated while nodular BCC (75%) was the most common type of BCC. Squamous cell carcinoma is more common than basal cell carcinoma in African albinos
Non-abelian Action for Multiple Five-Branes with Self-Dual Tensors
We construct an action for non-abelian 2-form in 6-dimensions. Our action
consists of a non-abelian generalization of the abelian action of Perry and
Schwarz for a single five-brane. It admits a self-duality equation on the field
strength as the equation of motion. It has a modified 6d Lorentz symmetry. On
dimensional reduction on a circle, our action gives the standard 5d Yang-Mills
action plus higher order corrections. Based on these properties, we propose

Effect of Variable Selection Strategy on the Performance of Prognostic Models When Using Multiple Imputation
BACKGROUND: Variable selection is an important issue when developing
prognostic models. Missing data occur frequently in clinical research.
Multiple imputation is increasingly used to address the presence of
missing data in clinical research. The effect of different variable selection
strategies with multiply imputed data on the external performance of
derived prognostic models has not been well examined.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We used backward variable selection with
9 different ways to handle multiply imputed data in a derivation sample
to develop logistic regression models for predicting death within 1 year
of hospitalization with an acute myocardial infarction. We assessed
the prognostic accuracy of each derived model in a temporally distinct
validation sample. The derivation and validation samples consisted of
11524 patients hospitalized between 1999 and 2001 and 7889 patients
hospitalized between 2004 and 2005, respectively. We considered 41
candidate predictor variables. Missing data occurred frequently, with
only 13% of patients in the derivation sample and 31% of patients in the
validation sample having complete data. Regardless of the significance
level for variable selection, the prognostic model developed using only
the complete cases in the derivation sample had substantially worse
performance in the validation sample than did the models for which
variables were selected using the multiply imputed versions of the
derivation sample. The other 8 approaches to handling multiply imputed
data resulted in prognostic models with performance similar to one
another.
CONCLUSIONS: Ignoring missing data and using only subjects with
complete data can result in the derivation of prognostic models with poor
performance. Multiple imputation should be used to account for missing
data when developing prognostic models

Production of π0 and η mesons in Cu+Au collisions at sNN =200 GeV
Production of π0 and η mesons has been measured at midrapidity in Cu+Au collisions at sNN=200GeV. Measurements were performed in π0(η)→γγ decay channel in the 1(2)-20GeV/c transverse momentum range. A strong suppression is observed for π0 and η meson production at high transverse momentum in central Cu+Au collisions relative to the p+p results scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. In central collisions the suppression is similar to Au+Au with comparable nuclear overlap. The η/π0 ratio measured as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with mT-scaling parametrization down to pT=2GeV/c, its asymptotic value is constant and consistent with Au+Au and p+p and does not show any significant dependence on collision centrality. Similar results were obtained in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as in e+e- collisions in a range of collision energies sNN=3-1800 GeV. This suggests that the quark-gluon-plasma medium produced in Cu+Cu collisions either does not affect the jet fragmentation into light mesons or it affects the π0 and η the same way
