The Relaxed Game Chromatic Index of \u3cem\u3ek\u3c/em\u3e-Degenerate Graphs

The (r, d)-relaxed coloring game is a two-player game played on the vertex set of a graph G. We consider a natural analogue to this game on the edge set of G called the (r, d)-relaxed edge-coloring game. We consider this game on trees and more generally, on k-degenerate graphs. We show that if G is k-degenerate with ∆(G) = ∆, then the first player, Alice, has a winning strategy for this game with r = ∆+k−1 and d≥2k2 + 4k

Columbanus, charisma and the revolt of the monks of Bobbio

The account of the revolt of the monks of Bobbio against Columbanus’ successor Attala by Jonas of Bobbio gives only some clues as to why it took place, but suggests that Attala was lacking charisma. Jonas fails to mention the subsequent introduction of the Benedictine Rule to Bobbio and its combination with Columbanian traditions in the Rule of the master; he is also reticent about the deve lopment of cells, or submonasteries, partly as a result of the revolt. It is suggested here that the monastic rule currently known as the Rule of Eugippius was compiled for these cells and that the Rules of the fathers, currently dated to an earlier period, might also be associated with attempts to pacify the monks’ revolt

Intracranial haemorrhage in a dobermann puppy with von Willebrand's disease

Neurological examination of a lethargic, ataxic 12-week-old dobermann revealed decreased conscious proprioception in all its limbs. Haematological examination revealed a low platelet count. Cytological examination of a sample of cerebrospinal fluid revealed evidence of haemorrhage and chronic inflammation. The levels of von Willebrand's factor antigen were extremely low. Skull radiographs were consistent with mild hydrocephalus. Treatment resulted in little clinical improvement and the animal was euthanased. Post mortem examination of the brain revealed an internal hydrocephalus with haemorrhage into the ventricles. It was considered that the animal had suffered severe intracranial haemorrhage as a result of its low level of von Willebrand's factor antigen and that the bleeding may have been potentiated by the low platelet count

I Would Prefer Not to Help You

Bartleby, the Scrivener recounts a story of a scrivener who would prefer not to do anything, whether that be parts of his job, changing his location, or eating his dinner. The narrator’s reaction to Bartleby’s lazy desires seem to be admirable, but his selfish motivation and false compassion are evident. The way the narrator views and treats Bartleby is consistent with the standards of philanthropy of the wealthy during the mid-nineteenth century. The narrator truly believes he has helped Bartleby to the best of his ability, yet fails to connect with Bartleby outside of offering him money and future assistance if required. This may be blamed on the narrator’s lack of relationship with God. People below the narrator’s socioeconomic status were viewed solely on how they could benefit him and his business and were expected to conform to the narrator’s standards. Bartleby the Scrivener, though a melancholy story leading to Bartleby’s death, can be used to see an accurate picture of philanthropy in the 1850s
