    Measurement of parity violation in thermal neutron capture on a proton

    The NPDGamma experiment is measuring the directional parity violating asymmetry in the emission of gamma rays from the capture of cold neutrons on protons. The asymmetry can be related in a straightforward way to effective couplings within an appropriate NN weak interaction theory, such as chiral perturbation based effective field theories. Since this is a measurement within a two body system, the observables are calculable without uncertainties from few to many body (large nuclei) effects. The experiment consists of two phases. The first one, at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE), has just been completed, providing a measurement of the asymmetry to an accuracy at the 10-7 level. Directional gamma-ray asymmetries have been measured using a number of targets including liquid hydrogen and several medium - A isotopes. The second phase of the experiment will commence at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge, where it is currently being reassembled, to continue the measurement to an accuracy of the 10-8 level. In this work the results of the commissioning phases as well as the first production phase of the experiment are discussed

    High-Efficiency Resonant RF Spin Rotator with Broad Phase Space Acceptance for Pulsed Polarized Cold Neutron Beams

    We have developed a radio-frequency resonant spin rotator to reverse the neutron polarization in a 9.5 cm x 9.5 cm pulsed cold neutron beam with high efficiency over a broad cold neutron energy range. The effect of the spin reversal by the rotator on the neutron beam phase space is compared qualitatively to RF neutron spin flippers based on adiabatic fast passage. The spin rotator does not change the kinetic energy of the neutrons and leaves the neutron beam phase space unchanged to high precision. We discuss the design of the spin rotator and describe two types of transmission-based neutron spin-flip efficiency measurements where the neutron beam was both polarized and analyzed by optically-polarized 3He neutron spin filters. The efficiency of the spin rotator was measured to be 98.0+/-0.8% on resonance for neutron energies from 3.3 to 18.4 meV over the full phase space of the beam. As an example of the application of this device to an experiment we describe the integration of the RF spin rotator into an apparatus to search for the small parity-violating asymmetry A_gamma in polarized cold neutron capture on para-hydrogen by the NPDGamma collaboration at LANSCE

    Strategies of post-war anomie’s overcoming in the fields of social interactions and business

    This paper presents the general strategies of the post-war anomie’s overcoming in the fields of social interactions and business. The main purpose of the research is to study developmental features of the anomic behavior, and possible behavioral pathologies of people in business environment that can occur in post-war society. Investigation of this topic in the paper is carried out in the following logical sequence: at the initial stage of the research, an analysis of the main stages of the phenomenon of anomie in human life was carried out. Based on the analysis results, it is substantiated that a number of socio-psychological problems arise when social interactions are changed, and business environment is developed rapidly. This tendency is more visible in a post-war society. The aim of the research is the systematization of methodological approaches for implementations the psychological aid and work in mental correction and rehabilitation among people with anomic behavior, to prevent the deepening of the negative symptoms endangering emotional state and possible behavioral pathologies do not become deeper and endanger the whole society. The paper presents the results of an empirical analysis, which showed that the person with anomic behavior or marginal person falls into the psychological shock, which is characterized by the following aspects such as tensions caused by efforts to achieve the necessary psychological adaptation, emotion of loss and depreciation (friends, status, property and profession), feeling of rejection, violation of roles, role expectations, values, self-identification of emotions, existence of an unexpected alarm, hatred, disgust as a result of the realization of cultural differences and, finally, feeling of non-completeness due to failure to adapt to the new business environment. Based on the results of the study of various societies during the post-war period, the article identified strategies for overcoming social anomie in the spheres of social interactions and business. The main strategy types include unification strategy, professional specific orientations, disintegration of vital activities, retreat strategy, adventurism, anti-sublimation (humiliation behavior) and innovative strategy. The identification of strategic priorities for overcoming anomie, which are of practical meaning for productive business sphere management, should serve as the perspective directions for further research

    XeNA: an automated ‘open-source’ 129Xe hyperpolarizer for clinical use

    Here we provide a full report on the construction, components, and capabilities of our consortium’s “open-source” large-scale (~ 1 L/h) 129Xe hyperpolarizer for clinical, pre-clinical, and materials NMR/MRI (Nikolaou et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA, 110, 14150 (2013)). The ‘hyperpolarizer’ is automated and built mostly of off-the-shelf components; moreover, it is designed to be cost-effective and installed in both research laboratories and clinical settings with materials costing less than $125,000. The device runs in the xenon-rich regime (up to 1800 Torr Xe in 0.5 L) in either stopped-flow or single-batch mode—making cryo-collection of the hyperpolarized gas unnecessary for many applications. In-cell 129Xe nuclear spin polarization values of ~ 30%–90% have been measured for Xe loadings of ~ 300–1600 Torr. Typical 129Xe polarization build-up and T1 relaxation time constants were ~ 8.5 min and ~ 1.9 h respectively under our spin-exchange optical pumping conditions; such ratios, combined with near-unity Rb electron spin polarizations enabled by the high resonant laser power (up to ~ 200 W), permit such high PXe values to be achieved despite the high in-cell Xe densities. Importantly, most of the polarization is maintained during efficient HP gas transfer to other containers, and ultra-long 129Xe relaxation times (up to nearly 6 h) were observed in Tedlar bags following transport to a clinical 3 T scanner for MR spectroscopy and imaging as a prelude to in vivo experiments. The device has received FDA IND approval for a clinical study of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease subjects. The primary focus of this paper is on the technical/engineering development of the polarizer, with the explicit goals of facilitating the adaptation of design features and operative modes into other laboratories, and of spurring the further advancement of HP-gas MR applications in biomedicine

    Near-unity nuclear polarization with an open-source 129Xe hyperpolarizer for NMR and MRI

    The exquisite NMR spectral sensitivity and negligible reactivity of hyperpolarized xenon-129 (HP129Xe) make it attractive for a number of magnetic resonance applications; moreover, HP129Xe embodies an alternative to rare and nonrenewable 3He. However, the ability to reliably and inexpensively produce large quantities of HP129Xe with sufficiently high 129Xe nuclear spin polarization (PXe) remains a significant challenge—particularly at high Xe densities. We present results from our “open-source” large-scale (∼1 L/h) 129Xe polarizer for clinical, preclinical, and materials NMR and MRI research. Automated and composed mostly of off-the-shelf components, this “hyperpolarizer” is designed to be readily implementable in other laboratories. The device runs with high resonant photon flux (up to 200 W at the Rb D1 line) in the xenon-rich regime (up to 1,800 torr Xe in 500 cc) in either single-batch or stopped-flow mode, negating in part the usual requirement of Xe cryocollection. Excellent agreement is observed among four independent methods used to measure spin polarization. In-cell PXe values of ∼90%, ∼57%, ∼50%, and ∼30% have been measured for Xe loadings of ∼300, ∼500, ∼760, and ∼1,570 torr, respectively. PXe values of ∼41% and ∼28% (with ∼760 and ∼1,545 torr Xe loadings) have been measured after transfer to Tedlar bags and transport to a clinical 3 T scanner for MR imaging, including demonstration of lung MRI with a healthy human subject. Long “in-bag” 129Xe polarization decay times have been measured (T1 ∼38 min and ∼5.9 h at ∼1.5 mT and 3 T, respectively)—more than sufficient for a variety of applications

    Male infertility in iranian traditional medicine, causes, treatment and compares it with modern medicine

    Introduction: One of the major problems of medical science is infertility and reduced fertility. At least one of six couples is infertile. Male infertility is considered in 40 of infertility cases. Prevalence and importance of infertility and the attention of traditional medicine scholars to the causes of infertility and treatment of this problem which its main part is recipes can be helpful, because nutrition has many effects on human health. This study was performed with aim to evaluate the causes of infertility and recipes mentioned in traditional medicine books to prevent and treat male infertility beside modern medicine. Methods: In this systematic review study, the main textbooks of traditional medicine such as Ghanoon in the section of male fertility disorders were evaluated according to the key words of infertility and nutrition, and the causes of male infertility were studied. Then, the causes of male infertility and its treatment in the books and articles of modern medicine were studied and the results were briefly compared. Results: Iranian traditional physicians have described several causes for infertility and have expressed different treatments depending on the cause. Among these, the role of nutrition is highlighted. The causes of this disorder in some cases is weakness, in some cases is weakness in main organs such as brain, heart, liver and testicles, and in some cases is the main organs's mizaj. Simple food regimes can be used for treatment of many cases, therefore, in this study, treatment and nutritional measures were obtained based on the cause. Conclusion: The studies showed that viewpoints are similar in Traditional Medicine and Modern Medicine); in both viewpoints, the causes of infertility can be related to the reproductive system (testicles, tract, and penis), sometimes brain, liver and kidney dysfunction, and in some cases, sexual dysfunction may be involved in infertility. These similarities show the richness of Iranian medicine and need for attention to its therapy methods. According to the results, as the first step of treatment, the list of foods presented in this study can be used.     FP12 Pulsed Cold Neutron Beam Line for Fundamental Nuclear Physics at LANSCE

    Abstract. A new pulsed cold neutron beam line, flight path 12, has been commissioned at LANSCE by the NPDGamma collaboration. The beam line was designed for fundamental nuclear physics experiments. We present the measured brightness of the unique backscattering moderator viewed by the flight path 12 neutron guide and report results for guide performance measurements. The peak neutron flux out of the guide is dN/dE= 2.4×10 5 neutrons/meV/cm 2 /s/µA at 2 meV neutron energy
