Modelling Backward Travelling Holes in Mixed Traffic Conditions Using an Agent Based Simulation
A spatial queue model in a multi-agent simulation framework is extended by introducing a more realistic behaviour, i.e. backward travelling holes. Space corresponding to a leaving vehicle is not available immediately on the upstream end of the link. Instead, the space travels backward with a constant speed. This space is named a ‘hole’. The resulting dynamics resemble Newell’s simplified kinematic wave model. Furthermore, fundamental diagrams from homogeneous and heterogeneous traffic simulations are presented. The sensitivity of the presented approach is tested with the help of flow density contours
Sensitivity analysis of the variable demand probit stochastic user equilibrium with multiple user classes
This paper presents a formulation of the multiple user class, variable demand, probit stochastic user equilibrium model. Sufficient conditions are stated for differentiability of the equilibrium flows of this model. This justifies the derivation of sensitivity expressions for the equilibrium flows, which are presented in a format that can be implemented in commercially available software. A numerical example verifies the sensitivity expressions, and that this formulation is applicable to large networks
A three-dimensional macroscopic fundamental diagram for mixed bi-modal urban networks
Recent research has studied the existence and the properties of a macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) for large urban networks. The MFD should not be universally expected as high scatter or hysteresis might appear for some type of networks, like heterogeneous networks or freeways. In this paper, we investigate if aggregated relationships can describe the performance of urban bi-modal networks with buses and cars sharing the same road infrastructure and identify how this performance is influenced by the interactions between modes and the effect of bus stops. Based on simulation data, we develop a three-dimensional vehicle MFD (3D-vMFD) relating the accumulation of cars and buses, and the total circulating vehicle flow in the network. This relation experiences low scatter and can be approximated by an exponential-family function. We also propose a parsimonious model to estimate a three-dimensional passenger MFD (3D-pMFD), which provides a different perspective of the flow characteristics in bi-modal networks, by considering that buses carry more passengers. We also show that a constant Bus-Car Unit (BCU) equivalent value cannot describe the influence of buses in the system as congestion develops. We then integrate a partitioning algorithm to cluster the network into a small number of regions with similar mode composition and level of congestion. Our results show that partitioning unveils important traffic properties of flow heterogeneity in the studied network. Interactions between buses and cars are different in the partitioned regions due to higher density of buses. Building on these results, various traffic management strategies in bi-modal multi-region urban networks can then be integrated, such as redistribution of urban space among different modes, perimeter signal control with preferential treatment of buses and bus priority
Derivation and Empirical Validation of a Refined Traffic Flow Model
The gas-kinetic foundation of fluid-dynamic traffic equations suggested in
previous papers [Physica A 219, 375 and 391 (1995)] is further refined by
applying the theory of dense gases and granular materials to the Boltzmann-like
traffic model by Paveri-Fontana. It is shown that, despite the
phenomenologically similar behavior of ordinary and granular fluids, the
relations for these cannot directly be transferred to vehicular traffic. The
dissipative and anisotropic interactions of vehicles as well as their
velocity-dependent space requirements lead to a considerably different
structure of the macroscopic traffic equations, also in comparison with the
previously suggested traffic flow models. As a consequence, the instability
mechanisms of emergent density waves are different. Crucial assumptions are
validated by empirical traffic data and essential results are illustrated by

Single-machine scheduling with stepwise tardiness costs and release times
We study a scheduling problem that belongs to the yard operations component of the railroad planning problems, namely the hump sequencing problem. The scheduling problem is characterized as a single-machine problem with stepwise tardiness cost objectives. This is a new scheduling criterion which is also relevant in the context of traditional machine scheduling problems. We produce complexity results that characterize some cases of the problem as pseudo-polynomially solvable. For the difficult-to-solve cases of the problem, we develop mathematical programming formulations, and propose heuristic algorithms. We test the formulations and heuristic algorithms on randomly generated single-machine scheduling problems and real-life datasets for the hump sequencing problem. Applications of sensitivity analysis for probit stochastic network equilibrium
Network equilibrium models are widely used by traffic practitioners to aid them in making decisions concerning the operation and management of traffic networks. The common practice is to test a prescribed range of hypothetical changes or policy measures through adjustments to the input data, namely the trip demands, the arc performance (travel time) functions, and policy variables such as tolls or signal timings. Relatively little use is, however, made of the full implicit relationship between model inputs and outputs inherent in these models. By exploiting the representation of such models as an equivalent optimisation problem, classical results on the sensitivity analysis of non-linear programs may be applied, to produce linear relationships between input data perturbations and model outputs. We specifically focus on recent results relating to the probit Stochastic User Equilibrium (PSUE) model, which has the advantage of greater behavioural realism and flexibility relative to the conventional Wardrop user equilibrium and logit SUE models. The paper goes on to explore four applications of these sensitivity expressions in gaining insight into the operation of road traffic networks. These applications are namely: identification of sensitive, ‘critical’ parameters; computation of approximate, re-equilibrated solutions following a change (post-optimisation); robustness analysis of model forecasts to input data errors, in the form of confidence interval estimation; and the solution of problems of the bi-level, optimal network design variety. Finally, numerical experiments applying these methods are reported
Characteristics of Vehicular Traffic Flow at a Roundabout
We construct a stochastic cellular automata model for the description of
vehicular traffic at a roundabout designed at the intersection of two
perpendicular streets. The vehicular traffic is controlled by a self-organized
scheme in which traffic lights are absent. This controlling method incorporates
a yield-at-entry strategy for the approaching vehicles to the circulating
traffic flow in the roundabout. Vehicular dynamics is simulated within the
framework of the probabilistic cellular automata and the delay experienced by
the traffic at each individual street is evaluated for specified time
intervals. We discuss the impact of the geometrical properties of the
roundabout on the total delay. We compare our results with traffic-light
signalisation schemes, and obtain the critical traffic volume over which the
intersection is optimally controlled through traffic light signalisation

Design Analysis of Corridors-in-the-Sky
Corridors-in-the-sky or tubes is one of new concepts in dynamic airspace configuration. It accommodates high density traffic, which has similar trajectories. Less air traffic controllers workload is expected than classic airspaces, thus, corridors-in-the-sky may increase national airspace capacity and reduce flight delays. To design corridors-in-the-sky, besides identifying their locations, their utilization, altitudes, and impacts on remaining system need to be analyzed. This paper chooses one tube candidate and presents analyses of spatial and temporal utilization of the tube, the impact on the remaining traffic, and the potential benefit caused by off-loading the traffic from underlying sectors. Fundamental issues regarding to the benefits have been also clarified. Methods developed to assist the analysis are described. Analysis results suggest dynamic tubes in terms of varied utilizations during different time periods. And it is found that combined lane options would be a good choice to lower the impact on non-tube users. Finally, it shows significant reduction of peak aircraft count in underlying sectors with only one tube enabled
A Vehicular Traffic Flow Model Based on a Stochastic Acceleration Process
A new vehicular traffic flow model based on a stochastic jump process in
vehicle acceleration and braking is introduced. It is based on a master
equation for the single car probability density in space, velocity and
acceleration with an additional vehicular chaos assumption and is derived via a
Markovian ansatz for car pairs. This equation is analyzed using simple driver
interaction models in the spatial homogeneous case. Velocity distributions in
stochastic equilibrium, together with the car density dependence of their
moments, i.e. mean velocity and scattering and the fundamental diagram are

A rolling-horizon quadratic-programming approach to the signal control problem in large-scale congested urban road networks
The paper investigates the efficiency of a recently developed signal control methodology, which offers a computationally feasible technique for real-time network-wide signal control in large-scale urban traffic networks and is applicable also under congested traffic conditions. In this methodology, the traffic flow process is modeled by use of the store-and-forward modeling paradigm, and the problem of network-wide signal control (including all constraints) is formulated as a quadratic-programming problem that aims at minimizing and balancing the link queues so as to minimize the risk of queue spillback. For the application of the proposed methodology in real time, the corresponding optimization algorithm is embedded in a rolling-horizon (model-predictive) control scheme. The control strategy’s efficiency and real-time feasibility is demonstrated and compared with the Linear-Quadratic approach taken by the signal control strategy TUC (Traffic-responsive Urban Control) as well as with optimized fixed-control settings via their simulation-based application to the road network of the city centre of Chania, Greece, under a number of different demand scenarios.
