The Impact of Technological Innovations on the Historiography and Theory of Cinema, Montreal, Canada, 1–6 November 2011
The international conference “The Impact of Technological Innovations on the Historiography and Theory of Cinema” was a large six-day event that took place in Montreal’s Cinémathèque québécoise. The conference featured over a hundred speakers, including distinguished academics and theorists such as Bernard Stiegler, Tom Gunning and W.J.T. Mitchell, among others. It was organised by André Gaudreault of the University of Montreal and Martin Lefebvre of Concordia, both known primarily, although by no means exclusively, for their contributions to the study of early film. Taking as its focus a more general theoretical and historical perspective, the chosen papers and invited speakers (Gunning, Thomas Elsaesser, Charlie Keil) did, to some degree, support a predilection towards early cinema studies

Variable Interstellar Absorption toward the Halo Star HD 219188 - Implications for Small-Scale Interstellar Structure
Within the last 10 years, strong, narrow Na I absorption has appeared at
v_sun ~ -38 km/s toward the halo star HD 219188; that absorption has continued
to strengthen, by a factor 2-3, over the past three years. The line of sight
appears to be moving into/through a relatively cold, quiescent intermediate
velocity (IV) cloud, due to the 13 mas/yr proper motion of HD 219188; the
variations in Na I probe length scales of 2-38 AU/yr. UV spectra obtained with
the HST GHRS in 1994-1995 suggest N(H_tot) ~ 4.8 X 10^{17} cm^{-2}, ``halo
cloud'' depletions, n_H ~ 25 cm^{-3}, and n_e ~ 0.85-6.2 cm^{-3} (if T ~ 100 K)
for the portion of the IV cloud sampled at that time. The relatively high
fractional ionization, n_e/n_H >~ 0.034, implies that hydrogen must be
partially ionized. The N(Na I)/N(H_tot) ratio is very high; in this case, the
variations in Na I do not imply large local pressures or densities.Comment: 12 pages; aastex; to appear in ApJ

In vivo and in vitro assessment of mirtazapine pharmacokinetics in cats with liver disease.
BackgroundLiver disease (LD) prolongs mirtazapine half-life in humans, but it is unknown if this occurs in cats with LD and healthy cats.Hypothesis/objectivesTo determine pharmacokinetics of administered orally mirtazapine in vivo and in vitro (liver microsomes) in cats with LD and healthy cats.AnimalsEleven LD and 11 age-matched control cats.MethodsCase-control study. Serum was obtained 1 and 4 hours (22 cats) and 24 hours (14 cats) after oral administration of 1.88 mg mirtazapine. Mirtazapine concentrations were measured by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. Drug exposure and half-life were predicted using limited sampling modeling and estimated using noncompartmental methods. in vitro mirtazapine pharmacokinetics were assessed using liver microsomes from 3 LD cats and 4 cats without LD.ResultsThere was a significant difference in time to maximum serum concentration between LD cats and control cats (median [range]: 4 [1-4] hours versus 1 [1-4] hours; P = .03). The calculated half-life of LD cats was significantly prolonged compared to controls (median [range]: 13.8 [7.9-61.4] hours versus 7.4 [6.7-9.1] hours; P < .002). Mirtazapine half-life was correlated with ALT (P = .002; r = .76), ALP (P < .0001; r = .89), and total bilirubin (P = .0008; r = .81). The rate of loss of mirtazapine was significantly different between microsomes of LD cats (-0.0022 min-1 , CI: -0.0050 to 0.00054 min-1 ) and cats without LD (0.01849 min-1 , CI: -0.025 to -0.012 min-1 ; P = .002).Conclusions and clinical importanceCats with LD might require less frequent administration of mirtazapine than normal cats

Integrating serological and genetic data to quantify cross-species transmission: brucellosis as a case study
Epidemiological data are often fragmented, partial, and/or ambiguous and unable to yield the desired level of understanding
of infectious disease dynamics to adequately inform control measures. Here, we show how the information contained in
widely available serology data can be enhanced by integration with less common type-specific data, to improve the understanding
of the transmission dynamics of complex multi-species pathogens and host communities. Using brucellosis in
Northern Tanzania as a case-study, we developed a latent process model based on serology data obtained from the
field, to reconstruct Brucella transmission dynamics. We were able to identify sheep and goats as a more likely source
of human and animal infection than cattle; however, the highly cross-reactive nature of Brucella spp. meant that it was
not possible to determine which Brucella species (B. abortus or B. melitensis) is responsible for human infection. We
extended our model to integrate simulated serology and typing data, and show that although serology alone can identify
the host source of human infection under certain restrictive conditions, the integration of even small amounts (5%) of
typing data can improve understanding of complex epidemiological dynamics. We show that data integration will often
be essential when more than one pathogen is present and when the distinction between exposed and infectious individuals
is not clear from serology data. With increasing epidemiological complexity, serology data become less informative.
However, we show how this weakness can be mitigated by integrating such data with typing data, thereby enhancing
the inference from these data and improving understanding of the underlying dynamics

Organic synthesis is changing; in a world where budgets are constrained and the environmental impacts of practice are scrutinized, it is increasingly recognized that the efficient use of human resource is just as important as material use. New technologies and machines have found use as methods for transforming the way we work, addressing these issues encountered in research laboratories by enabling chemists to adopt a more holistic systems approach in their work. Modern developments in this area promote a multi-disciplinary approach and work is more efficient as a result. This Review focuses on the concepts, procedures and methods that have far-reaching implications in the chemistry world. Cytochrome cM decreases photosynthesis under photomixotrophy in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803
Photomixotrophy is a metabolic state that enables photosynthetic microorganisms to simultaneously perform photosynthesis and metabolism of imported organic carbon substrates. This process is complicated in cyanobacteria, since many, including Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, conduct photosynthesis and respiration in an interlinked thylakoid membrane electron transport chain. Under photomixotrophy, the cell must therefore tightly regulate electron fluxes from photosynthetic and respiratory complexes. In this study, we demonstrate, via characterization of photosynthetic apparatus and the proteome, that photomixotrophic growth results in a gradual inhibition of QA- reoxidation in wild-type Synechocystis, which largely decreases photosynthesis over 3 d of growth. This process is circumvented by deleting the gene encoding cytochrome cM (CytM), a cryptic c-type heme protein widespread in cyanobacteria. The ΔCytM strain maintained active photosynthesis over the 3-d period, demonstrated by high photosynthetic O2 and CO2 fluxes and effective yields of PSI and PSII. Overall, this resulted in a higher growth rate compared to that of the wild type, which was maintained by accumulation of proteins involved in phosphate and metal uptake, and cofactor biosynthetic enzymes. While the exact role of CytM has not been determined, a mutant deficient in the thylakoid-localized respiratory terminal oxidases and CytM (ΔCox/Cyd/CytM) displayed a phenotype similar to that of ΔCytM under photomixotrophy. This, in combination with other physiological data, and in contrast to a previous hypothesis, suggests that CytM does not transfer electrons to these complexes. In summary, our data suggest that CytM may have a regulatory role in photomixotrophy by modulating the photosynthetic capacity of cells
