Investigação Epidemiológica das Internações por Insuficiência Renal no Brasil, entre 2019 e 2023: Estudo Ecológico
INTRODUCTION: Renal failure, characterized by loss of kidney function, compromises blood filtration and elimination of toxins. In Brazil, it is one of the main causes of hospitalization, especially due to the increase in chronic diseases and population aging. Between 2019 and 2023, the management of this condition was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which overloaded the health system and influenced access to diagnosis and treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to quantify and analyze the rates of hospitalizations for renal failure in Brazil. METHODOLOGY: The retrospective study with a quantitative approach used data from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), provided by the SUS Information Technology Department (TABNET/DATASUS). The analysis covered hospitalizations for renal failure in Brazil from January 2019 to December 2023, using descriptive statistics and tabulation in Microsoft Excel 2016 and Microsoft Word 10 spreadsheets. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Between 2019 and 2023, Brazil registered 631,626 hospitalizations for renal failure, with emphasis on the Southeast (293,657 cases) and Northeast (142,454) regions. The South region had 110,502 hospitalizations, followed by the Central-West (41,672) and North (43,341). The total number of hospitalizations grew over the years, from 121,671 in 2019 to 152,346 in 2023, with the impact of the pandemic reflected in the variations in hospitalizations in the intermediate years. CONCLUSION: Therefore, the analysis of hospitalizations due to kidney failure between 2019 and 2023 highlights the need for public policies that strengthen the prevention and treatment of the disease, especially in regions with less access to health services. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in hospitalizations in 2023 highlight the urgency of investments in infrastructure and professional training to ensure equitable care.INTRODUÇÃO: A insuficiência renal, caracterizada pela perda da função dos rins, compromete a filtração sanguínea e a eliminação de toxinas.
Brazilian Consensus on Photoprotection
Brazil is a country of continental dimensions with a large heterogeneity of climates and massive mixing of the population. Almost the entire national territory is located between the Equator and the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Earth axial tilt to the south certainly makes Brazil one of the countries of the world with greater extent of land in proximity to the sun. The Brazilian coastline, where most of its population lives, is more than 8,500 km long. Due to geographic characteristics and cultural trends, Brazilians are among the peoples with the highest annual exposure to the sun. Epidemiological data show a continuing increase in the incidence of nonmelanoma and melanoma skin cancers. Photoprotection can be understood as a set of measures aimed at reducing sun exposure and at preventing the development of acute and chronic actinic damage. Due to the peculiarities of Brazilian territory and culture, it would not be advisable to replicate the concepts of photoprotection from other developed countries, places with completely different climates and populations. Thus the Brazilian Society of Dermatology has developed the Brazilian Consensus on Photoprotection, the first official document on photoprotection developed in Brazil for Brazilians, with recommendations on matters involving photoprotection
Nursing and sexuality: integrative review of papers published by the Latin-American Journal of Nursing and Brazilian Journal of Nursing
This study departs from the assumption that studies addressing sexuality in the field of nursing present changes and broaden the scope of discussion to include gender and sexual rights, although a strong tendency to link sexuality to its biological aspects is still observed. This study identifies the state-of-the-art of studies addressing sexuality published by two international journals: Latin American Journal of Nursing and The Brazilian Journal of Nursing. The sources were papers published in both periodicals over a period of ten years (from 1998 to 2007). In a universe of 1,894 searched abstracts, 29 mentioned the word ‘sexuality’. The results confirm this study’s assumption showing that the studies addressing sexuality from the perspective of nursing published by these two journals broaden the understanding on the subject as they incorporate categories such as gender, but also excessively link sexuality to its biological aspects. Current management of the gastrointestinal complications of systemic sclerosis.
Systemic sclerosis is a multisystem autoimmune disorder that involves the gastrointestinal tract in more than 90% of patients. This involvement can extend from the mouth to the anus, with the oesophagus and anorectum most frequently affected. Gut complications result in a plethora of presentations that impair oral intake and faecal continence and, consequently, have an adverse effect on patient quality of life, resulting in referral to gastroenterologists. The cornerstones of gastrointestinal symptom management are to optimize symptom relief and monitor for complications, in particular anaemia and malabsorption. Early intervention in patients who develop these complications is critical to minimize disease progression and improve prognosis. In the future, enhanced therapeutic strategies should be developed, based on an ever-improving understanding of the intestinal pathophysiology of systemic sclerosis. This Review describes the most commonly occurring clinical scenarios of gastrointestinal involvement in patients with systemic sclerosis as they present to the gastroenterologist, with recommendations for the suggested assessment protocol and therapy in each situation
