Velocity-space sensitivity of the time-of-flight neutron spectrometer at JET
The velocity-space sensitivities of fast-ion diagnostics are often described by so-called weight functions. Recently, we formulated weight functions showing the velocity-space sensitivity of the often dominant beam-target part of neutron energy spectra. These weight functions for neutron emission spectrometry (NES) are independent of the particular NES diagnostic. Here we apply these NES weight functions to the time-of-flight spectrometer TOFOR at JET. By taking the instrumental response function of TOFOR into account, we calculate time-of-flight NES weight functions that enable us to directly determine the velocity-space sensitivity of a given part of a measured time-of-flight spectrum from TOFOR
Socio-cognitive determinants of consumers’ support for the fair trade movement
Despite the reasonable explanatory power of existing models of consumers’ ethical decision making, a large part of the process remains unexplained. This article draws on previous research and proposes an integrated model that includes measures of the theory of planned behavior, personal norms, self-identity, neutralization, past experience, and attitudinal ambivalence. We postulate and test a variety of direct and moderating effects in the context of a large survey with a representative sample of the U.K. population. Overall, the resulting model represents an empirically robust and holistic attempt to identify the most important determinants of consumers’ support for the fair-trade movement. Implications and avenues for further research are discussed
Archives, Paratexts and Life Writing in the First World War
The chapters in this collection have demonstrated a range of ways the phrase 'medical paratext' can be conceptualised, and particularly the interactions between medical practice, medical texts, and their writers and readers. Focusing on the diaries of Canadian nurse-writers in the First World War (particularly the work of nursing sister Clare Gass and VAD Alice Lighthall), this chapter proposes that paratext can demonstrate the contemporary archiving and historiography of the authors' experience, and support their claims to authoritative writing - as military histories, as medical practitioners, and as women operating within male-dominated environments

Recent D-T results on TFTR
Routine tritium operation in TFTR has permitted investigations of alpha particle physics in parameter ranges resembling those of a reactor core. ICRF wave physics in a DT plasma and the influence of isotopic mass on supershot confinement have also been studied. Continued progress has been made in optimizing fusion power production in TFTR, using extended machine capability and Li wall conditioning. Performance is currently limited by MHD stability. A new reversed magnetic shear regime is being investigated with reduced core transport and a higher predicted stability limit
Relationship of edge localized mode burst times with divertor flux loop signal phase in JET
A phase relationship is identified between sequential edge localized modes (ELMs) occurrence times in a set of H-mode tokamak plasmas to the voltage measured in full flux azimuthal loops in the divertor region. We focus on plasmas in the Joint European Torus where a steady H-mode is sustained over several seconds, during which ELMs are observed in the Be II emission at the divertor. The ELMs analysed arise from intrinsic ELMing, in that there is no deliberate intent to control the ELMing process by external means. We use ELM timings derived from the Be II signal to perform direct time domain analysis of the full flux loop VLD2 and VLD3 signals, which provide a high cadence global measurement proportional to the voltage induced by changes in poloidal magnetic flux. Specifically, we examine how the time interval between pairs of successive ELMs is linked to the time-evolving phase of the full flux loop signals. Each ELM produces a clear early pulse in the full flux loop signals, whose peak time is used to condition our analysis. The arrival time of the following ELM, relative to this pulse, is found to fall into one of two categories: (i) prompt ELMs, which are directly paced by the initial response seen in the flux loop signals; and (ii) all other ELMs, which occur after the initial response of the full flux loop signals has decayed in amplitude. The times at which ELMs in category (ii) occur, relative to the first ELM of the pair, are clustered at times when the instantaneous phase of the full flux loop signal is close to its value at the time of the first ELM

Impact of nitrogen seeding on confinement and power load control of a high-triangularity JET ELMy H-mode plasma with a metal wall
This paper reports the impact on confinement and power load of the high-shape
2.5MA ELMy H-mode scenario at JET of a change from an all carbon plasma facing
components to an all metal wall. In preparation to this change, systematic
studies of power load reduction and impact on confinement as a result of
fuelling in combination with nitrogen seeding were carried out in JET-C and are
compared to their counterpart in JET with a metallic wall. An unexpected and
significant change is reported on the decrease of the pedestal confinement but
is partially recovered with the injection of nitrogen.Comment: 30 pages, 16 figure
Genetic characterisation of a Eucalyptus nitens
The measurement and statistical analysis of data from eight Eucalyptus nitens trials, established in the summer
rainfall forestry region of South Africa during the 1980s and 1990s, have enabled the characterisation of the Institute
for Commercial Forestry Research’s breeding population. Provenance testing showed that the more northerly New
South Wales (Australia) Eucalyptus nitens provenances of Barren Mountain and Barrington Tops are distinctly
better suited to the summer rainfall areas of South Africa than the southern New South Wales provenances and the
Victorian provenance, Penny Saddle. Generally, the species was not badly affected by Coniothyrium canker. High
type B genetic correlations for all site pairs, except one comparison, ranged from 0.75 to 0.99 for diameter at breast
height (dbh), indicating very little or no genotype environment interaction for dbh for the genotypes tested in this
study. Narrow-sense heritability coefficients ranged from 0.01 to 0.34, indicating that the species generally exhibited
sufficient breeding opportunity for improvement of diameter growth. High genetic correlations of greater than 0.90
between diameter measurements at 52 to 62 months after establishment and diameter measurements at 94 or 113
months were found, indicating that selections can be reliably made at five or six years. Predicted genetic gains were
highest in the trials at Goedehoop and Arthur’s Seat, with increases in dbh of 3.07 cm (17.1%) and 3.17 cm (20.7%),
