The saving grace
Many economists agree that a country's rate of saving can be a key factor in the growth rate and living standards the country achieves. Analysts are less certain about which factors have positive and negative influences on saving, what role government should have in creating a better environment for saving, and the extent to which a country can offset the effects of low domestic saving by tapping into other countries' savings. ; Economists, bankers, and officials discussed these and other aspects of saving earlier this year at a symposium sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Richard Alm and David Gould recap much of that discussion in this article.Money ; Saving and investment
Results and speculations concerning Comer relation algebras and the flexible atom conjecture
We study some finite integral symmetric relation algebras whose forbidden
cycles are all 2-cycles. These algebras arise from a finite field construction
due to Comer. We consider conditions that allow other finite algebras to embed
into these Comer algebras, and as an application give the first known finite
representation of relation algebra , one of whose atoms is flexible.
We conclude with some speculation about how the ideas presented here might
contribute to a proof of the flexible atom conjecture

Those states that have recovered revenue lost during the great recession have done so due to factors largely beyond their control
The Great Recession of 2007-2009 meant a large hit to the revenues of U.S. states. Now, more than five years later, revenues in most of these states have recovered. But what has fuelled this recovery? Using data from across all 50 states, James Alm and David L. Sjoquist find that internal factors – such as the state’s economy, taxes, demographics, politics and policy – have had little or no effect on its revenue recovery. They argue that their results show that trends in state government revenues are largely influenced by broader, national, economic trends beyond the control of state governments
