Transcriptome Analysis in Spleen Reveals Differential Regulation of Response to Newcastle Disease Virus in Two Chicken Lines.
Enhancing genetic resistance of chickens to Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) provides a promising way to improve poultry health, and to alleviate poverty and food insecurity in developing countries. In this study, two inbred chicken lines with different responses to NDV, Fayoumi and Leghorn, were challenged with LaSota NDV strain at 21 days of age. Through transcriptome analysis, gene expression in spleen at 2 and 6 days post-inoculation was compared between NDV-infected and control groups, as well as between chicken lines. At a false discovery rate <0.05, Fayoumi chickens, which are relatively more resistant to NDV, showed fewer differentially expressed genes (DEGs) than Leghorn chickens. Several interferon-stimulated genes were identified as important DEGs regulating immune response to NDV in chicken. Pathways predicted by IPA analysis, such as "EIF-signaling", "actin cytoskeleton organization nitric oxide production" and "coagulation system" may contribute to resistance to NDV in Fayoumi chickens. The identified DEGs and predicted pathways may contribute to differential responses to NDV between the two chicken lines and provide potential targets for breeding chickens that are more resistant to NDV

We reformulate the Hamiltonian form of bosonic eleven dimensional
supergravity in terms of an object that unifies the three-form and the metric.
For the case of four spatial dimensions, the duality group is manifest and the
metric and C-field are on an equal footing even though no dimensional reduction
is required for our results to hold. One may also describe our results using
the generalized geometry that emerges from membrane duality. The relationship
between the twisted Courant algebra and the gauge symmetries of eleven

Quantum machine learning: a classical perspective
Recently, increased computational power and data availability, as well as
algorithmic advances, have led machine learning techniques to impressive
results in regression, classification, data-generation and reinforcement
learning tasks. Despite these successes, the proximity to the physical limits
of chip fabrication alongside the increasing size of datasets are motivating a
growing number of researchers to explore the possibility of harnessing the
power of quantum computation to speed-up classical machine learning algorithms.
Here we review the literature in quantum machine learning and discuss
perspectives for a mixed readership of classical machine learning and quantum
computation experts. Particular emphasis will be placed on clarifying the
limitations of quantum algorithms, how they compare with their best classical
counterparts and why quantum resources are expected to provide advantages for
learning problems. Learning in the presence of noise and certain
computationally hard problems in machine learning are identified as promising
directions for the field. Practical questions, like how to upload classical

GAP WORK project report: training for youth practitioners on tackling gender-related violence
This project sought to challenge gender-related violence against (and by) children and young people by developing training for practitioners who have everyday contact with general populations of children and young people (‘youth practitioners’). Through improved knowledge and understanding practitioners can better identify and challenge sexist, sexualising, homophobic or controlling language and behaviour, and know when and how to refer children and young people to the most appropriate support services. Recommending anchor points in structure-preserving hypertext document retrieval
Traditional WWW search engines index and recommend individual Web pages to assist users in locating relevant documents. Users are often overwhelmed by the large answer set recommended by the search engines. The logical starting point of the hyper-document is thus hidden among the large basket of matching pages. Users need to spend a lot of effort browsing through the pages to locate the starting point, a very time consuming process. This paper studies the anchor point indexing problem. The anchor points of a given user query is a small set of key pages from which the larger set of documents that are relevant to the query can be easily reached. The use of anchor points help solve the problems of huge answer set and low precision suffered by most search engines by considering the hyper-link structures of the relevant documents, and by providing a summary view of the result set.published_or_final_versio
Dynamic Limits on Planar Libration-Orbit Coupling Around an Oblate Primary
This paper explores the dynamic properties of the planar system of an
ellipsoidal satellite in an equatorial orbit about an oblate primary. In
particular, we investigate the conditions for which the satellite is bound in
librational motion or when the satellite will circulate with respect to the
primary. We find the existence of stable equilibrium points about which the
satellite can librate, and explore both the linearized and non-linear dynamics
around these points. Absolute bounds are placed on the phase space of the
libration-orbit coupling through the use of zero-velocity curves that exist in
the system. These zero-velocity curves are used to derive a sufficient
condition for when the satellite's libration is bound to less than 90 degrees.
When this condition is not satisfied so that circulation of the satellite is
possible, the initial conditions at zero libration angle are determined which
lead to circulation of the satellite. Exact analytical conditions for
circulation and the maximum libration angle are derived for the case of a small

Self-Affirmation Improves Problem-Solving under Stress
High levels of acute and chronic stress are known to impair problem-solving and creativity on a broad range of tasks. Despite this evidence, we know little about protective factors for mitigating the deleterious effects of stress on problem-solving. Building on previous research showing that self-affirmation can buffer stress, we tested whether an experimental manipulation of self-affirmation improves problem-solving performance in chronically stressed participants. Eighty undergraduates indicated their perceived chronic stress over the previous month and were randomly assigned to either a self-affirmation or control condition. They then completed 30 difficult remote associate problem-solving items under time pressure in front of an evaluator. Results showed that self-affirmation improved problem-solving performance in underperforming chronically stressed individuals. This research suggests a novel means for boosting problem-solving under stress and may have important implications for understanding how self-affirmation boosts academic achievement in school settings. © 2013 Creswell et al
