Thrifty swimming with shear-thinning
Microscale propulsion is integral to numerous biomedical systems, for example
biofilm formation and human reproduction, where the surrounding fluids comprise
suspensions of polymers. These polymers endow the fluid with non-Newtonian
rheological properties, such as shear-thinning and viscoelasticity. Thus, the
complex dynamics of non-Newtonian fluids presents numerous modelling
challenges, strongly motivating experimental study. Here, we demonstrate that
failing to account for "out-of-plane" effects when analysing experimental data
of undulatory swimming through a shear-thinning fluid results in a significant
overestimate of fluid viscosity around the model swimmer C. elegans. This
miscalculation of viscosity corresponds with an overestimate of the power the
swimmer expends, a key biophysical quantity important for understanding the
internal mechanics of the swimmer. As experimental flow tracking techniques
improve, accurate experimental estimates of power consumption using this
technique will arise in similar undulatory systems, such as the planar beating
of human sperm through cervical mucus, will be required to probe the
interaction between internal power generation, fluid rheology, and the
resulting waveform
Quantification of the Individual Characteristics of the Human Dentition
The considerations for admissibility suggested by the Daubert trilogy challenge forensic experts to provide scientific support for opinion testimony. The defense bar has questioned the reliability of bitemark analysis. Under an award from the U. S. Department of Justice, via the Midwest Forensic Resource Center, a two-year feasibility study was undertaken to quantify six dental characteristics. Using two computer programs, the exemplars of 419 volunteers were digitally scanned, characteristics were measured, and frequency was calculated. The study demonstrates that there were outliers or rare dental characteristics in measurements. An analysis of the intra-observer and inter-observer consistency demonstrated a high degree of agreement. Expansion of the sample size through collaboration with other academic researchers will be necessary to be able to quantify the occurrence of these characteristics in the general population. The automated software application, Tom\u27s Toolbox, developed specifically for this research project, could also provide a template for precisely quantifying other pattern evidence
The Teaching of Procedure Across Common Law Systems
What difference does the teaching of procedure make to legal education, legal scholarship, the legal profession, and civil justice reform? This first of four articles on the teaching of procedure canvasses the landscape of current approaches to the teaching of procedure in four legal systems—the United States, Canada, Australia, and England and Wales—surveying the place of procedure in the law school curriculum and in professional training, the kinds of subjects that “procedure” encompasses, and the various ways in which procedure is learned. Little sustained reflection has been carried out as to the import and impact of this longstanding law school subject. Through a comparative approach, this series of articles explores what difference the approach a particular jurisdiction has chosen to adopt makes for legal education, legal scholarship, the practice of law and the profession, and to civil justice reform in our legal system.
En quoi l’enseignement de la procédure civile modifi e-t-il les études juridiques, la recherche juridique, la profession d’avocat et la réforme de la justice civile? Pushdown Control-Flow Analysis for Free
Traditional control-flow analysis (CFA) for higher-order languages, whether
implemented by constraint-solving or abstract interpretation, introduces
spurious connections between callers and callees. Two distinct invocations of a
function will necessarily pollute one another's return-flow. Recently, three
distinct approaches have been published which provide perfect call-stack
precision in a computable manner: CFA2, PDCFA, and AAC. Unfortunately, CFA2 and
PDCFA are difficult to implement and require significant engineering effort.
Furthermore, all three are computationally expensive; for a monovariant
analysis, CFA2 is in , PDCFA is in , and AAC is in .
In this paper, we describe a new technique that builds on these but is both
straightforward to implement and computationally inexpensive. The crucial
insight is an unusual state-dependent allocation strategy for the addresses of
continuation. Our technique imposes only a constant-factor overhead on the
underlying analysis and, with monovariance, costs only O(n3) in the worst case.
This paper presents the intuitions behind this development, a proof of the

Insect Pests Associated With Birdsfoot Trefoil, \u3ci\u3eLotus Corniculatus\u3c/i\u3e, in Wisconsin
Insect surveys taken during 1984-1986 in Ashland and Bayfield Counties of northern Wisconsin revealed that several potential insect pest species were common in birdsfoot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus. Three plant bug species, including: the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris: alfalfa plant bug, Adelphocoris lineolatus; and Plagiognathus chrysanthemi were abundant in most sampled fields. P. chrysanthemi was the most abundant species, was only present in the northern locations, and completed one generation per year. A. lineolatus and L. lineolaris were second and third in abundance, respectively, and completed two generations per year. Population levels of the potato leafhopper, Empoasca fabae. exceeded a combined total of 45 nymphs and adults per sweep in a southern Wisconsin location but were uncommon in northern Wisconsin. Present, but less abundant, were the trefoil seed chalcid, Bruchophagus platypterus; meadow spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius; and pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum, all occurring at densities of less than one insect per sweep
New Records of Michigan Cicadidae (Homoptera), With Notes on the Use of Songs to Monitor Range Changes
We present records of Diceroprocta vitripennis, Tibicen chloromera, and Tibicen pruinosa (new state record) in Michigan. Monitoring geographic range changes and population size differences by song suggests several population situations for cicadas: (1) sizable populations in most areas of apparently good habitat; (2) widely separated single individuals or small populations on the edges of populated regions, representing range extensions that may be of limited duration; (3) one or a few individuals present only once, probably transferred in soil on roots, and ultimately unsuccessful. Species- specific calling songs allow sensitive measurement of species\u27 range changes
The Schwinger mechanism and graphene
The Schwinger mechanism, the production of charged particle-antiparticle
pairs in a macroscopic external electric field, is derived for 2+1 dimensional
theories. The rate of pair production per unit area for four species of
massless fermions, with charge , in a constant electric field is given
by where is
the speed of light for the two-dimensional system. To the extent undoped
graphene behaves like the quantum field-theoretic vacuum for massless fermions
in 2+1 dimensions, the Schwinger mechanism should be testable experimentally. A
possible experimental configuration for this is proposed. Effects due to
deviations from this idealized picture of graphene are briefly considered. It
is argued that with present day samples of graphene, tests of the Schwinger
formula may be possible.Comment: Extensive revisions. The distinction between the vacuum decay rate
and the pair production rate in the Schwinger mechanism is now stressed. The
