    Dynamical Masses for Pre-Main Sequence Stars: A Preliminary Physical Orbit for V773 Tau A

    We report on interferometric and radial-velocity observations of the double-lined 51-d period binary (A) component of the quadruple pre-main sequence (PMS) system V773 Tau. With these observations we have estimated preliminary visual and physical orbits of the V773 Tau A subsystem. Among other parameters, our orbit model includes an inclination of 66.0 ±\pm 2.4 deg, and allows us to infer the component dynamical masses and system distance. In particular we find component masses of 1.54 ±\pm 0.14 and 1.332 ±\pm 0.097 M_{\sun} for the Aa (primary) and Ab (secondary) components respectively. Our modeling of the subsystem component spectral energy distributions finds temperatures and luminosities consistent with previous studies, and coupled with the component mass estimates allows for comparison with PMS stellar models in the intermediate-mass range. We compare V773 Tau A component properties with several popular solar-composition models for intermediate-mass PMS stars. All models predict masses consistent to within 2-sigma of the dynamically determined values, though some models predict values that are more consistent than others.Comment: ApJ in press; 25 pages, 6 figures; data tables available in journal versio

    Long-term stability of surgical-orthodontic correction of class III malocclusions with long-face syndrome

    Objectives: In the first place, to evaluate skeletal changes of the maxilla and mandible induced by surgical-orthodontic correction of malocclusions class III with long-face syndrome and secondly, to analyze the stability of these skeletal changes in the long term (more than 6 years). Design of Study: A retrospective, unicentric and longitudinal study of 19 patients who had undergone surgical and orthodontic therapy for class III skeletal malocclusion with long-face syndrome was undertaken. A cephalometric analysis based on 8 angle measurements, and statistical analyses at three different points in time (before orthodontic treatment, after orthognathic surgery and after a retention period of at least 6 years) were carried out. Results: The changes produced following surgery show that, with the exception of the maxillary plane and the facial axis, all other variables presented changes of great statistical difference. Conclusions: Skeletal changes after orthodontic-surgical correction present maxillary advance, mandibular regression and mandibular anterorotation. The angles that represent the mandibular vertical position (ramus angle, goniac angle and mandibular plane angle) showed statistically significant relapses and no stability in contrast to the facial axis

    Playing with monsters: character operators in natural language

    In his seminal work on demonstratives, Kaplan (1989) banned monsters from the realm of natural language semantics arguing that the English language does not contain operators that operate on linguistic character and, furthermore, that such operators could not be added to it. The first claim has been disputed since, giving rise to a monster hunt that led to the discovery of alleged monsters in a number of natural languages, and even to monstrous expressions in English. The second claim, however, seems to have been just implicitly answered by some of the responses to the first one. The goal of this brief paper is to offer a counterexample to that second assertion: the thesis that monsters could not be added to English. I claim not only that there are monsters, but that we can introduce monsters into the English language. Therefore, this is an essay about the possibility of implementing character operators into the English language. In order to do so, I first lay out a framework for a monstrous taxonomy. I then point to a very particular monster that terrorises children in Mexico, giving a superficial characterisation of it, and finally replying to some possible objections regarding its status as a real monster. The moral of this paper is that we only need a bit of wicked, child-like imagination in order to bring monsters to life in English.https://www.ester.ee/record=b538269

    Interactive Graphic Simulation: An Advanced Methodology to Improve the Teaching-Learning Process in Nuclear Engineering Education and Training

    Nowadays, computer simulators are becoming basic tools for education and training in many engineering fields. In the nuclear industry, the role of simulation for training of operators of nuclear power plants is also recognized of the utmost relevance. As an example, the International Atomic Energy Agency sponsors the development of nuclear reactor simulators for education, and arranges the supply of such simulation programs. Aware of this, in 2008 Gas Natural Fenosa, a Spanish gas and electric utility that owns and operate nuclear power plants and promotes university education in the nuclear technology field, provided the Department of Nuclear Engineering of Universidad Politécnica de Madrid with the Interactive Graphic Simulator (IGS) of “José Cabrera” (Zorita) nuclear power plant, an industrial facility whose commercial operation ceased definitively in April 2006. It is a state-of-the-art full-scope real-time simulator that was used for training and qualification of the operators of the plant control room, as well as to understand and analyses the plant dynamics, and to develop, qualify and validate its emergency operating procedures

    Toward a new data standard for combined marine biological and environmental datasets - expanding OBIS beyond species occurrences

    The Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) is the world's most comprehensive online, open-access database of marine species distributions. OBIS grows with millions of new species observations every year. Contributions come from a network of hundreds of institutions, projects and individuals with common goals: to build a scientific knowledge base that is open to the public for scientific discovery and exploration and to detect trends and changes that inform society as essential elements in conservation management and sustainable development. Until now, OBIS has focused solely on the collection of biogeographic data (the presence of marine species in space and time) and operated with optimized data flows, quality control procedures and data standards specifically targeted to these data. Based on requirements from the growing OBIS community to manage datasets that combine biological, physical and chemical measurements, the OBIS-ENV-DATA pilot project was launched to develop a proposed standard and guidelines to make sure these combined datasets can stay together and are not, as is often the case, split and sent to different repositories. The proposal in this paper allows for the management of sampling methodology, animal tracking and telemetry data, biological measurements (e.g., body length, percent live cover, ...) as well as environmental measurements such as nutrient concentrations, sediment characteristics or other abiotic parameters measured during sampling to characterize the environment from which biogeographic data was collected. The recommended practice builds on the Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A) standard and on practices adopted by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). It consists of a DwC Event Core in combination with a DwC Occurrence Extension and a proposed enhancement to the DwC MeasurementOrFact Extension. This new structure enables the linkage of measurements or facts - quantitative and qualitative properties - to both sampling events and species occurrences, and includes additional fields for property standardization. We also embrace the use of the new parentEventID DwC term, which enables the creation of a sampling event hierarchy. We believe that the adoption of this recommended practice as a new data standard for managing and sharing biological and associated environmental datasets by IODE and the wider international scientific community would be key to improving the effectiveness of the knowledge base, and will enhance integration and management of critical data needed to understand ecological and biological processes in the ocean, and on land.Fil: De Pooter, Daphnis.     This paper summarizes the work being performed at the Department of Nuclear Engineering (www.din.upm.es) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid to improve the education and training of future Spanish nuclear engineers according to the Bologna rules. We present two main efforts introduced in our programme: i) the understanding of the current computational methodologies/codes starting from the nuclear data processing, then the lattice and core calculations codes, and finally the power plant simulators, ii) the development of practical teaching-learning experiences with an Interactive Graphical Simulator of a real nuclear power plant

    OBJETIVO: describir las diferencias en las características clínicas de pacientes con lupus eritematoso sistémico (LES) de inicio temprano vs de inicio tardío. TIPO DE ESTUDIO: observacional, de cohorte, descriptivo y retrospectivo. SELECCIÓN DE UNIDADES DE ANÁLISIS Y RECOLECCIÓN DE DATOS: en la población se incluirá pacientes mayores de 18 años con diagnóstico de lupus eritematoso sistémico usando los criterios de clasificación de SLICC que fueron atendidos de forma ambulatoria en el Hospital Cayetano Heredia Lima Perú entre junio 2010 a junio 2020; luego se dividirá en dos grupos, el grupo 1 estará conformado por los pacientes con diagnóstico de lupus eritematoso sistémico de los 18 hasta los 50 años de edad y las unidades se seleccionarán por conveniencia de manera secuencial; el grupo 2 está conformado por los pacientes con diagnóstico de lupus eritematoso sistémico mayores de 50 años de edad, y se elegirá toda la población como muestra; los datos serán ingresados a dos fichas de recolección de datos, ficha 1 indica los criterios de diagnóstico de LES según SLICC, y la ficha 2 valora la actividad de LES; ANÁLISIS: para las variables continuas se utilizará: mediana y desviación estándar; para las variables categóricas binarias se utilizará: frecuencias absolutas y relativas. Para determinar la diferencia significativa entre los dos grupos se utilizará T de Student, y para valorar la asociación entro dos variables se utilizará la prueba de Chi Cuadrado

    La investigación realizada en el trabajo de titulación tiene sus fundamentos teóricos y metodológicos a través del estudio sistemático y bibliográfico, cuyo objetivo de la investigación fue plantear un modelo de políticas y procedimientos de control interno de los activos fijos dentro del Gobierno Autónomo Descentralizado Municipal De Santa Elena, esta investigación se realizó de acuerdo a la metodología cualicuantitativa la cual permite evaluar y analizar de distintas maneras, la primera a través de encuesta direccionada a los servidores públicos y la entrevista realizada al especialista en el área de control, permitiendo ver enfoques distintos para su análisis y tabulación de datos. se pudo evidenciar el cumplimiento de las normas de control interno existiendo problemas logísticos y administrativos en lo que corresponde a los bienes de larga duración del GAD municipal de Santa Elena, esto repercute económicamente a la institución y en general al pueblo ecuatoriano, esto ocasiona que dentro de los departamentos municipales existan equipos en malas condiciones, consumiendo espacio y obstruyendo en el desempeño de funciones de los servidores públicos
