OH 12.8-0.9: A New Water-Fountain Source
We present observational evidence that the OH/IR star OH 12.8-0.9 is the
fourth in a class of objects previously dubbed "water-fountain" sources. Using
the Very Long Baseline Array, we produced the first images of the water maser
emission associated with OH 12.8-0.9. We find that the masers are located in
two compact regions with an angular separation of ~109 mas on the sky. The axis
of separation between the two maser regions is at a position angle of 1.5 deg.
East of North with the blue-shifted (-80.5 to -85.5 km/s) masers located to the
North and the red-shifted (-32.0 to -35.5 km/s) masers to the South. In
addition, we find that the blue- and red-shifted masers are distributed along
arc-like structures ~10-12 mas across oriented roughly perpendicular to the
separation axis. The morphology exhibited by the water masers is suggestive of
an axisymmetric wind with the masers tracing bow shocks formed as the wind
impacts the ambient medium. This bipolar jet-like structure is typical of the
three other confirmed water-fountain sources. When combined with the previously
observed spectral characteristics of OH 12.8-0.9, the observed spatio-kinematic
structure of the water masers provides strong evidence that OH 12.8-0.9 is

Lattice QCD Calculation for the Physical Equation of State
In this report we consider the numerical simulations at finite temperature
using lattice QCD data for the computation of the thermodynamical quantities
including the pressure, energy density and the entropy density. These physical
quantities can be related to the equation of state for quarks and gluons. We
shall apply the lattice data to the evaluation of the specific structure of the
gluon and quark condensates at finite temperature in relation to the
deconfinement and chiral phase transitions. Finally we mention the quantum
nature of the phases at lower temperatures.Comment: 60 pages, 15 figure
An analysis of the impact of the Schistosomiasis Control Programme in Brazil
The impact of the Schistosomiasis Control Programme (PCE) in Brazil was analyzed, covering the period 1976 to 2003, using the following indicators: percentage of Schistosoma mansoni carriers detected among the population examined in the coproscopic surveys (PPS): mortality rate for schistosomiasis, per 100,000 inhabitants (TME): hospitalization rate for schistosomiasis, per 100,000 inhabitants (TIE): average age of deaths caused by schistosomiasis (IMOE). There was a 38.5% reduction in the PPS after the introduction of the PCE, attributed to the treatment of carriers. Even in hyper-endemic municipalities, such as Conde and Cuitegí, in the state of Paraíba, the PPS fell more than 50% after the first year of treatment. The parasitic burden of the carriers also decreased in the two municipalities. The TME was reduced by 63.4% and the TIE by 77.3%. The mortality rate was highest among the 50- and-above age group. The country´s IMOE rose 32.3%. The IMOE was seen to be much lower in the state of Minas Gerais, where the PCE was only initiated in 1983, with very limited coverage
Near-IR variability properties of a selected sample of AGB stars
We present the results of a near-infrared monitoring programme of a selected
sample of stars, initially suspected to be Mira variables and OH/IR stars,
covering more than a decade of observations. The objects monitored cover the
typical range of IRAS colours shown by O-rich stars on the Asymptotic Giant
Branch and show a surprisingly large diversity of variability properties. 16
objects are confirmed as large-amplitude variables. Periods between 360 and
1800 days and typical amplitudes from 1 to 2 magnitudes could be determined for
nine of them. In three light curves we find a systematic decrease of the mean
brightness, two light curves show pronounced asymmetry. One source, IRAS
07222-2005, shows infrared colours typical of Mira variables but pulsates with
a much longer period (approx. 1200 days) than a normal Mira. Two objects are
ither close to (IRAS 03293+6010) or probably in (IRAS 18299-1705) the post-AGB
phase. In IRAS 16029-3041 we found a systematic increase of the H-K colour of
approximately 1 magnitude, which we interpret as evidence of a recent episode
of enhanced mass loss. IRAS 18576+0341, a heavily obscured Luminous Blue
Variable was also monitored. The star showed a continued decrease of brightness

Critical Boundary Conditions for the Effective String
Gauge systems in the confining phase induce constraints at the boundaries of
the effective string, which rule out the ordinary bosonic string even with
short distance modifications. Allowing topological excitations, corresponding
to winding around the colour flux tube, produces at the quantum level a
universal free fermion string with a boundary phase nu=1/4. This coincides with
a model proposed some time ago in order to fit Monte Carlo data of 3D and 4D
Lattice gauge systems better. A universal value of the thickness of the colour

Identification of Very Red Counterparts of SiO Maser and OH/IR Objects in the GLIMPSE Survey
Using the 3.6/4.5/5.8/8.0 micron images with 1.2 arcsec pixel resolution from
the Spitzer/GLIMPSE survey, we investigated 23 masing and 18 very red objects
that were not identified in the 2MASS survey. Counterparts for all selected
objects were found in the GLIMPSE images. Color indices in these IR bands
suggest the presence of a high-extinction layer of more than a few tenths of a
solar mass in front of the central star. Furthermore, radio observations in the
SiO and H2O maser lines found characteristic maser-line spectra of the embedded
objects, e.g., the SiO J=1-0 line intensity in the v=2 state stronger than that
of the v=1 state, or very widespread H2O maser emission spectra. This indicates
that these objects are actually enshrouded by very thick circumstellar matter,
some of which cannot be ascribed to the AGB wind of the central star.
Individually interesting objects are discussed, including two newly found water
fountains and an SiO source with nebulosity.Comment: High resolution figures available at
