    The Goddess is all around us: Her face is reflected in the burgeoning new growth of every ensuing spring; her power is evident in the miracle of conception and childbirth and in the newborn’s cry as it searches for the nurturing breast; we glimpse her in the alluring beauty of youth, in the incredible power of sexual attraction, in the affection of family gatherings, and in the gentle caring of loved ones as they leave the mortal world. The Goddess is with us in the everyday miracles of life, growth, and death which always have surrounded us and always will, and this ubiquity speaks to the enduring presence and changing masks of the universal power people have always recognized in their lives.     Active volcanoes are significant sources of seismic and acoustic radiation. Extensive work has shown that infrasound is an effective tool to study and monitor active volcanoes. Infrasound is now a regular tool utilized by volcano observatories to aid in volcano monitoring and hazard mitigation. Infrasound‐based studies are able to provide important information on eruption dynamics and to develop quantitative models of volcanic eruptions. In addition, volcanoes provide excellent acoustic sources for atmospheric propagation studies and can be used to infer atmospheric dynamics and structure (see Johnson and Ripepe, 2011; Fee and Matoza, 2013 for recent reviews on volcano infrasound). The number of infrasound sensors and studies is also increasing rapidly, including those deployed as part of the USArray Transportable (seismic) Array. Lastly, seismic and acoustic records provide complementary information on both volcanic and nonvolcanic sources and elastic wave propagation in the Earth and atmosphere (Arrowsmith et al., 2010)

    A serological investigation of caseous lymphadenitis in four flocks of sheep

    A double antibody sandwich ELISA developed by ID-DLO, Lelystad to detect Corynebocterium pseudotuberculosis infection was used on 329 sheep from four pedigree Suffolk flocks in which clinical cases of caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) had occurred. At subsequent necropsy, typical CLA lesions were seen in 133 sheep, and the diagnosis was confirmed on culture. Lesions were most commonly seen in lungs (n = 46), parotid lymph nodes (n = 44), prescapular lymph nodes (n = 38) and mediastinal lymph nodes (n = 31). The sensitivity of the ELISA test for detecting culture-positive sheep was 0.88, while the specificity of the test was 0.55. The antibody ELISA detected 87.5 per cent of sheep that had CLA lesions restricted to internal organs only. It was concluded that the ELISA test has a valuable role in detecting sheep with both clinical and subclinical CLA

Las Vegas is no exception to this rule. What was a boomtown in Las Vegas from the 1980s to the early twenty-first century came crashing to a halt. Various churches across denominational lines lost 30 percent of their congregants and finances. As Las Vegas continues its slow climb out of the economic downturn, churches have to learn how to adapt and make first-time guests long-term members. It is with this cultural context in mind that this project has been developed

    A Model for Developing Emergency Medical Services Instructor Knowledge

    PROBLEM: The task of educating Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers requires EMS instructors to possess and convey translational knowledge and skills relevant to out-of-hospital emergency care. Insufficiently prepared or new EMS instructors may lack translational knowledge and skills along these lines and be at a deficit when it comes to educating EMS providers. PURPOSE: The project involved creation, implementation, and analysis of a model state EMS instructor core training program in Mississippi, with the aim of developing translational knowledge and skills for use by EMS instructors. METHOD: The project utilized a revised Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) model and a standardized survey tool. INTERVENTION: The survey answered: For EMS instructors, does taking a state-level EMS instructor core training program develop translational knowledge and skills for use in the classroom, lab, and practicum settings? RESULTS: The results were statistically significant, with a cumulative average perceived learning gain across all survey questions of “great gain” (M = 4.08, SD = 1.15) and average ratings of “moderate gain” or greater on each individual survey question. CONCLUSION: The results support further dialogue between state officials and stakeholders regarding the prospect of developing and implementing an official state EMS instructor core training program in Mississippi

    BACKGROUND: Humans and mice with loss of function mutations in GPR54 (KISS1R) or kisspeptin do not progress through puberty, caused by a failure to release GnRH. The transcriptional networks regulated by these proteins in the hypothalamus have yet to be explored by genome-wide methods. RESULTS: We show here, using 1 million exon mouse arrays (Exon 1.0 Affymetrix) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR) validation to analyse microdissected hypothalamic tissue from Gpr54 and Kiss1 knockout mice, the extent of transcriptional regulation in the hypothalamus. The sensitivity to detect important transcript differences in microdissected RNA was confirmed by the observation of counter-regulation of Kiss1 expression in Gpr54 knockouts and confirmed by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Since Gpr54 and Kiss1 knockout animals are effectively pre-pubertal with low testosterone (T) levels, we also determined which of the validated transcripts were T-responsive and which varied according to genotype alone. We observed four types of transcriptional regulation (i) genotype only dependent regulation, (ii) T only dependent regulation, (iii) genotype and T-dependent regulation with interaction between these variables, (iv) genotype and T-dependent regulation with no interaction between these variables. The results implicate for the first time several transcription factors (e.g. Npas4, Esr2), proteases (Klk1b22), and the orphan 10-transmembrane transporter TMEM144 in the biology of GPR54/kisspeptin function in the hypothalamus. We show for the neuronal activity regulated transcription factor NPAS4, that distinct protein over-expression is seen in the hypothalamus and hippocampus in Gpr54 knockout mice. This links for the first time the hypothalamic-gonadal axis with this important regulator of inhibitory synapse formation. Similarly we confirm TMEM144 up-regulation in the hypothalamus by RNA in situ hybridization and western blot.     Lake-size dependency of wind shear and convection as controls on gas exchange

    High-frequency physical observations from 40 temperate lakes were used to examine the relative contributions of wind shear (u*) and convection (w*) to turbulence in the surface mixed layer. Seasonal patterns of u* and w* were dissimilar; u* was often highest in the spring, while w * increased throughout the summer to a maximum in early fall. Convection was a larger mixed-layer turbulence source than wind shear (u */w*-1 for lakes* and w* differ in temporal pattern and magnitude across lakes, both convection and wind shear should be considered in future formulations of lake-air gas exchange, especially for small lakes. © 2012 by the American Geophysical Union.Jordan S.
