Mixed solvent electrolytes for ambient temperature secondary lithium cells

    Get PDF
The present invention comprises an improved electrolyte for secondary lithium-based cells as well as batteries fabricated using this electrolyte. The electrolyte is a lithium containing salt dissolved in a non-aqueous solvent, which is made from a mixture of ethylene carbonate, ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, 2-methylfuran, and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran. This improved, mixed solvent electrolyte is more conductive than prior electrolytes and much less corrosive to lithium anodes. Batteries constructed with this improved electrolyte utilize lithium or lithium alloy anodes and cathodes made of metal chalcogenides or oxides, such as TiS.sub.2, NbSe.sub.3, V.sub.6 O.sub.13, V.sub.2 O.sub.5, MoS.sub.2, MoS.sub.3, CoO.sub.2, or CrO.sub.2, dissolved in a supporting polymer matrix, like EPDM. The preferred non-aqueous solvent mixture comprises approximately 5 to 30 volume percent ethylene carbonate, approximately 0.01 to 0.1 weight percent ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, and approximately 0.2 to 2 percent 2-methylfuran, with the balance being 2-methyltetrahydrofuran. The most preferred solvent comprises approximately 10 to 20 volume percent ethylene carbonate, about 0.05 weight percent ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, and about 1.0 percent 2-methylfuran, with the balance being 2-methyltetrahydrofuran. The concentration of lithium arsenic hexafluoride can range from about 1.0 to 1.8 M; a concentration 1.5 M is most preferred. Secondary batteries made with the improved electrolyte of this invention have lower internal impedance, longer cycle life, higher energy density, low self-discharge, and longer shelf life

Tapped Out: Threats to the Human Right to Water in the Urban United States

    Get PDF
In the United States today, the goal of universal water service is slipping out of reach. Water costs are rising across the country, forcing many individuals to forgo running water or sanitation, or to sacrifice other essential human rights. The fixed costs of water systems have increased in recent years, driven in part by underinvestment in infrastructure. In many cities, this has been exacerbated by population shifts and the economic downturn. In this era of increasing costs and limited financial resources, water providers struggle to balance the competing priorities of modernization and universal access. This report, researched and written by students of Georgetown Law’s Human Rights Institute in the winter of 2013, details the causes, effects, and solutions to the affordability crisis affecting water in the urban United States

Dendrite preventing separator for secondary lithium batteries

    Get PDF
Dendrites are prevented from shorting a secondary lithium battery by use of a first porous separator such as porous polypropylene adjacent the lithium anode that is unreactive with lithium and a second porous fluoropolymer separator between the cathode and the first separator such as polytetrafluoroethylene that is reactive with lithium. As the tip of a lithium dendrite contacts the second separator, an exothermic reaction occurs locally between the lithium dendrite and the fluoropolymer separator. This results in the prevention of the dendrite propagation to the cathode

60°N was +2.0°C, relative to the 1981–2010 average value (Fig. 5.1). This marks a new high for the record. The average annual surface air temperature (SAT) anomaly for 2016 for land stations north of starting in 1900, and is a significant increase over the previous highest value of +1.2°C, which was observed in 2007, 2011, and 2015. Average global annual temperatures also showed record values in 2015 and 2016. Currently, the Arctic is warming at more than twice the rate of lower latitudes

Human Illness from Avian Influenza H7N3, British Columbia

Avian influenza that infects poultry in close proximity to humans is a concern because of its pandemic potential. In 2004, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H7N3 occurred in poultry in British Columbia, Canada. Surveillance identified two persons with confirmed avian influenza infection. Symptoms included conjunctivitis and mild influenzalike illness

Structure-Function Analysis of Mammalian CYP2B Enzymes Using 7-Substituted Coumarin Derivatives as Probes: Utility of Crystal Structures and Molecular Modeling in Understanding Xenobiotic Metabolism s

ABSTRACT Crystal structures of CYP2B35 and CYP2B37 from the desert woodrat were solved in complex with 4-(4-chlorophenyl)imidazole (4-CPI). The closed conformation of CYP2B35 contained two molecules of 4-CPI within the active site, whereas the CYP2B37 structure demonstrated an open conformation with three 4-CPI molecules, one within the active site and the other two in the substrate access channel. To probe structurefunction relationships of CYP2B35, CYP2B37, and the related CYP2B36, we tested the O-dealkylation of three series of related substrates-namely, 7-alkoxycoumarins, 7-alkoxy-4-(trifluoromethyl)coumarins, and 7-alkoxy-4-methylcoumarinswith a C1-C7 side chain. CYP2B35 showed the highest catalytic efficiency (k cat /K M ) with 7-heptoxycoumarin as a substrate, followed by 7-hexoxycoumarin. In contrast, CYP2B37 showed the highest catalytic efficiency with 7-ethoxy-4-(trifluoromethyl) coumarin (7-EFC), followed by 7-methoxy-4-(trifluoromethyl) coumarin (7-MFC). CYP2B35 had no dealkylation activity with 7-MFC or 7-EFC. Furthermore, the new CYP2B-4-CPI-bound structures were used as templates for docking the 7-substituted coumarin derivatives, which revealed orientations consistent with the functional studies. In addition, the observation of multiple -Cl and -NH-p interactions of 4-CPI with the aromatic side chains in the CYP2B35 and CYP2B37 structures provides insight into the influence of such functional groups on CYP2B ligand binding affinity and specificity. To conclude, structural, computational, and functional analysis revealed striking differences between the active sites of CYP2B35 and CYP2B37 that will aid in the elucidation of new structure-activity relationships

Carbon disulfide. Just toxic or also bioregulatory and/or therapeutic?

The overview presented here has the goal of examining whether carbon disulfide (CS2) may play a role as an endogenously generated bioregulator and/or has therapeutic value. The neuro- and reproductive system toxicity of CS2 has been documented from its long-term use in the viscose rayon industry. CS2 is also used in the production of dithiocarbamates (DTCs), which are potent fungicides and pesticides, thus raising concern that CS2 may be an environmental toxin. However, DTCs also have recognized medicinal use in the treatment of heavy metal poisonings as well as having potency for reducing inflammation. Three known small molecule bioregulators (SMBs) nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide were initially viewed as environmental toxins. Yet each is now recognized as having intricate, though not fully elucidated, biological functions at concentration regimes far lower than the toxic doses. The literature also implies that the mammalian chemical biology of CS2 has broader implications from inflammatory states to the gut microbiome. On these bases, we suggest that the very nature of CS2 poisoning may be related to interrupting or overwhelming relevant regulatory or signaling process(es), much like other SMBs
