    In New Zealand drowning amongst preschoolers is one of the leading causes of death. The monetary and emotional costs to society are devastating and cannot be underestimated . The need to reduce the high number of deaths and the monetary and emotional costs prompted this research. This research presents the possibility for proactive measures to be taken in this area. In addition, it provides insightful knowledge for parents and educators alike. Ultimately, it seeks to reduce the number of child drownings that occur in the rural environment

    Gated networks: an inventory

    Gated networks are networks that contain gating connections, in which the outputs of at least two neurons are multiplied. Initially, gated networks were used to learn relationships between two input sources, such as pixels from two images. More recently, they have been applied to learning activity recognition or multi-modal representations. The aims of this paper are threefold: 1) to explain the basic computations in gated networks to the non-expert, while adopting a standpoint that insists on their symmetric nature. 2) to serve as a quick reference guide to the recent literature, by providing an inventory of applications of these networks, as well as recent extensions to the basic architecture. 3) to suggest future research directions and applications.Comment: Unpublished manuscript, 17 page

    Modelling and prediction of deformation during sintering of a metal foam based SOFC (EVOLVE)

    International audienceStacking of cells in a SOFC stack requires that each element be perfectly flat and deprived, as much as possible, of internal stresses while maintaining their electrochemical capabilities. The EVOLVE concept introduces a metal foam based anode in which the foam plays the role of current collector, gas diffuser and thermo-mechanical deformation buffer. Owing to the different mechanical behaviour of the anode components, the deformation during sintering cannot be intuitively anticipated. Therefore, the global deformation of the cell was modelled and simulated by Finite Element considering a phenomenological approach of the anisotropic sintering. The thermo-mechanical parameters of each component were determined experimentally by dilatometry and three-point bending tests operated under conditions identical to those of the sintering. Results provide relevant indications on components composition and morphology, and on the sintering conditions for producing flat and stackable cells

    7000 éves dél-magyarországi tuberkulózis esetek oszteológiai és molekuláris biológiai vizsgálata

    This study derives from the macroscopic analysis of a Late Neolithic population from southern Hungary. Remains were recovered from a tell settlement at Hódmezővásárhely-Gorzsa from graves within the settlement as well as pits, ditches, houses and as stray finds. Pathological analysis of the 71 individuals revealed numerous cases of infections and non-specific stress indicators, metabolic diseases, and evidence of trauma and mechanical changes. Several cases showed potential signs of tuberculosis and further analyses were undertaken, including biomolecular studies. The five individuals were all very young adults and included a striking case of hypertrophic pulmonary osteopathy. The initial macroscopic diagnosis of these five cases was confirmed by lipid biomarker analyses, and three of them were corroborated by DNA analysis. At present, these 7000-year-old individuals are among the oldest palaeopathological and palaeomicrobiological cases of tuberculosis worldwide
