Enabling the Autonomic Management of Federated Identity Providers
The autonomic management of federated authorization infrastructures (federations) is seen as a means for improving the monitoring and use of a service provider’s resources. However, federations are comprised of independent management domains with varying scopes of control and data ownership. The focus of this paper is on the autonomic management of federated identity providers by service providers located in other domains, when the identity providers have been diagnosed as the source of abuse. In particular, we describe how an autonomic controller, external to the domain of the identity provider, exercises control over the issuing of privilege attributes. The paper presents a conceptual design and implementation of an effector for an identity provider that is capable of enabling cross-domain autonomic management. The implementation of an effector for a SimpleSAMLphp identity provider is evaluated by demonstrating how an autonomic controller, together with the effector, is capable of responding to malicious abuse
Cost-effectiveness of multidisciplinary management of Tinnitus at a specialized Tinnitus centre.

Among severe sufferers it causes disability in various areas. As a result of the tinnitus, quality of life is often impaired. At present there is no cure or uniformly effective treatment, leading to fragmentized and costly tinnitus care. Evidence suggests that a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach in treating tinnitus is effective. The main objective of this study is to examine the effectiveness, costs, and cost-effectiveness of a comprehensive treatment provided by a specialized tinnitus center versus usual care. This paper describes the study protocol. METHODS/DESIGN: In a randomized controlled clinical trial 198 tinnitus patients will be randomly assigned to a specialized tinnitus care group or a usual care group. Adult tinnitus sufferers referred to the audiological centre are eligible. Included patients will be followed for 12 months. Primary outcome measure is generic quality of life (measured with the Health Utilities Index Mark III). Secondary outcomes are severity of tinnitus, general distress, tinnitus cognitions, tinnitus specific fear, and costs. Based on health state utility outcome data the number of patients to include is 198. Economic evaluation will be performed from a societal perspective. DISCUSSION: This is, to our knowledge, the first randomized controlled trial that evaluates a comprehensive treatment of tinnitus and includes a full economic evaluation from a societal perspective. If this intervention proves to be effective and cost-effective, implementation of this intervention is considered and anticipated. Soil methane sink capacity response to a long-term wildfire chronosequence in Northern Sweden
Boreal forests occupy nearly one fifth of the terrestrial land surface and are recognised as globally important regulators of carbon (C) cycling and greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon sequestration processes in these forests include assimilation of CO2 into biomass and subsequently into soil organic matter, and soil microbial oxidation of methane (CH4). In this study we explored how ecosystem retrogression, which drives vegetation change, regulates the important process of soil CH4 oxidation in boreal forests. We measured soil CH4 oxidation processes on a group of 30 forested islands in northern Sweden differing greatly in fire history, and collectively representing a retrogressive chronosequence, spanning 5000 years. Across these islands the build-up of soil organic matter was observed to increase with time since fire disturbance, with a significant correlation between greater humus depth and increased net soil CH4 oxidation rates. We suggest that this increase in net CH4 oxidation rates, in the absence of disturbance, results as deeper humus stores accumulate and provide niches for methanotrophs to thrive. By using this gradient we have discovered important regulatory controls on the stability of soil CH4 oxidation processes that could not have not been explored through shorter-term experiments. Our findings indicate that in the absence of human interventions such as fire suppression, and with increased wildfire frequency, the globally important boreal CH4 sink could be diminished

Modelling ground vibrations induced by harmonic loads
A finite-element model combining the frequency domain thin-layer method with paraxial boundary conditions to simulate the semi-infinite extent of a soil medium is presented in this paper. The combined numerical model is used to deal with harmonic vibrations of surface rigid foundations on non-horizontal soil profiles. The model can deal with soil media over rigid bedrock or significant depths of half-space. Structured finite elements are used to mesh simple geometry soil domains, whereas unstructured triangular mesh grids are employed to deal with complex geometry problems. Dynamic responses of homogeneous as well as layered soil profiles are simulated and validated against analytical and approximate solutions. Finally, the model is used to deal with surface ground vibration reduction, in which it is first validated against published results and then followed by an example involving a bridge
Natural images from the birthplace of the human eye
Here we introduce a database of calibrated natural images publicly available
through an easy-to-use web interface. Using a Nikon D70 digital SLR camera, we
acquired about 5000 six-megapixel images of Okavango Delta of Botswana, a
tropical savanna habitat similar to where the human eye is thought to have
evolved. Some sequences of images were captured unsystematically while
following a baboon troop, while others were designed to vary a single parameter
such as aperture, object distance, time of day or position on the horizon.
Images are available in the raw RGB format and in grayscale. Images are also
available in units relevant to the physiology of human cone photoreceptors,
where pixel values represent the expected number of photoisomerizations per
second for cones sensitive to long (L), medium (M) and short (S) wavelengths.

IACT observations of gamma-ray bursts: prospects for the Cherenkov Telescope Array
Gamma rays at rest frame energies as high as 90 GeV have been reported from
gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). There is
considerable hope that a confirmed GRB detection will be possible with the
upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), which will have a larger effective
area and better low-energy sensitivity than current-generation imaging
atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). To estimate the likelihood of such a
detection, we have developed a phenomenological model for GRB emission between
1 GeV and 1 TeV that is motivated by the high-energy GRB detections of
Fermi-LAT, and allows us to extrapolate the statistics of GRBs seen by lower
energy instruments such as the Swift-BAT and BATSE on the Compton Gamma-ray
Observatory. We show a number of statistics for detected GRBs, and describe how
the detectability of GRBs with CTA could vary based on a number of parameters,
such as the typical observation delay between the burst onset and the start of
ground observations. We also consider the possibility of using GBM on Fermi as
a finder of GRBs for rapid ground follow-up. While the uncertainty of GBM
localization is problematic, the small field-of-view for IACTs can potentially
be overcome by scanning over the GBM error region. Overall, our results
indicate that CTA should be able to detect one GRB every 20 to 30 months with
our baseline instrument model, assuming consistently rapid pursuit of GRB
alerts, and provided that spectral breaks below 100 GeV are not a common
feature of the bright GRB population. With a more optimistic instrument model,
the detection rate can be as high as 1 to 2 GRBs per year.Comment: 28 pages, 24 figures, 4 tables, submitted to Experimental Astronom
GRIPS - Gamma-Ray Imaging, Polarimetry and Spectroscopy
We propose to perform a continuously scanning all-sky survey from 200 keV to
80 MeV achieving a sensitivity which is better by a factor of 40 or more
compared to the previous missions in this energy range. The Gamma-Ray Imaging,
Polarimetry and Spectroscopy (GRIPS) mission addresses fundamental questions in
ESA's Cosmic Vision plan. Among the major themes of the strategic plan, GRIPS
has its focus on the evolving, violent Universe, exploring a unique energy
window. We propose to investigate -ray bursts and blazars, the
mechanisms behind supernova explosions, nucleosynthesis and spallation, the
enigmatic origin of positrons in our Galaxy, and the nature of radiation
processes and particle acceleration in extreme cosmic sources including pulsars
and magnetars. The natural energy scale for these non-thermal processes is of
the order of MeV. Although they can be partially and indirectly studied using
other methods, only the proposed GRIPS measurements will provide direct access
to their primary photons. GRIPS will be a driver for the study of transient
sources in the era of neutrino and gravitational wave observatories such as
IceCUBE and LISA, establishing a new type of diagnostics in relativistic and
nuclear astrophysics. This will support extrapolations to investigate star

Distribution of Capillary Transit Times in Isolated Lungs of Oxygen-Tolerant Rats
Rats pre-exposed to 85% O2 for 5–7 days tolerate the otherwise lethal effects of 100% O2. The objective was to evaluate the effect of rat exposure to 85% O2 for 7 days on lung capillary mean transit time (t¯c) and distribution of capillary transit times (h c(t)). This information is important for subsequent evaluation of the effect of this hyperoxia model on the redox metabolic functions of the pulmonary capillary endothelium. The venous concentration vs. time outflow curves of fluorescein isothiocyanate labeled dextran (FITC-dex), an intravascular indicator, and coenzyme Q1 hydroquinone (CoQ1H2), a compound which rapidly equilibrates between blood and tissue on passage through the pulmonary circulation, were measured following their bolus injection into the pulmonary artery of isolated perfused lungs from rats exposed to room air (normoxic) or 85% O2 for 7 days (hyperoxic). The moments (mean transit time and variance) of the measured FITC-dex and CoQ1H2 outflow curves were determined for each lung, and were then used in a mathematical model [Audi et al. J. Appl. Physiol. 77: 332–351, 1994] to estimate t¯c and the relative dispersion (RDc) of h c(t). Data analysis reveals that exposure to hyperoxia decreases lung t¯c by 42% and increases RDc, a measure h c(t) heterogeneity, by 40%
