The Birth of Modern Economics and “Crossfertilization” of Sciences

The term ‘crossfertilization of metaphors’ from discipline to discipline was used by Dr. Rolf Von Eckartsberg (1983) to describe mutually enriching metaphorical projections between autonomous disciplines aimed at helping scientists to form a particular view of reality or develop their own theories. However, this interesting path of studying conceptual mappings has not received sufficient consideration on the part of researchers though there are insightful observations and case studies of the phenomenon in question in the works of many authors. The current article is an attempt to study the mechanisms underlying the formation of a new conceptual domain – economics – through an interaction of knowledge structures between the new and established intellectual disciplines. Metaphor, analogy, and comparison are “mediators” in this interaction and vehicles in the conceptualization of economic reality and in expressing new cognitive content

Intentionality and Conventional Meaning (Socio-Historical Approach)

Linguistic studies of collective consciousness are practically nonexistent though insightful ideas are found in works of many linguists (Chomsky 1985, Fowler 1996). The central tenet of this paper is that archetypes (mental representations of concepts in collective consciousness) are built around socially significant experiences of people and comprise meanings which incarnate collective sentiments and ideologies. The number and composition of such meanings can change and vary due to an interplay of environmental factors – social, political, economic, cultural, etc. – and can be drawn from discourses which perform an ideational function concerned with the representation of world views in a language. Two propositions are preconditional for the present research: first, the acknowledgement of the force of authorial intent (intentionality) in discourse and, second, the assumption that over a long history, language has learnt to suit the needs of the society it functions in (mainly the needs of dominant social groups) by legitimatizing some meanings (conventional meanings) and rejecting others. The concept chosen for the analysis is monetary DEBT. Debt plays an important role both in the economic life of a country and in private lives of individuals. The attitude to debt has been changing throughout the history, and we hypothesize that economic discourses have had a major impact on collective perception of the concept in question

The Concept of ‘Water’ in the Metaphorics of Economic Discourse

    Get PDF
Cognitive onomasiology opens up new avenues for studying the processes of linguistic denomination of concepts. Economics as science and business as we know it today are more recent developments of human thought and activity than philosophy, or mathematics, or various trades, that is why they have to draw on general literary language or other sciences for their terms, hence the abundance of metaphorical designations in their terminological systems. Traditional studies within the framework of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory proceed from the target concept and aim to expose the systematicity of meaningful mappings with various source domains. The current research differs from them in that it proceeds from the source domain: the point of departure is the concept of WATER as an entity separate from the word ‘water’. The concept is treated as a unit of cognition constructed in the course of cognizance of a multitude of characteristics (components) which constitute the intension of the concept. The main aim of this research is to expose cognitively salient conceptual components of WATER which are operative in metaphorical designations and in the formation of conceptual content of newly formed economics and business terms (e.g. liquidity, flow, etc.)

This study shares a pedagogical inquiry into Early Childhood Environmental Education (ECEE). With praxis in mind, I connected the academic theory which I was learning with fieldwork practice, aiming to explore more critical understandings of ECEE and share them alongside the growing conversations and stories engaging seriously with young children and their environments. What resulted was an exploration, a ‘first-step’ for myself and participants, towards learning how to build an ECEE project based on participant and community interests. As such, processes and protocols were fluid, as participants and myself navigated and experimented with individual and group learning interests, capacity-building, and teaching/learning with young children about/in/for the ‘natural world’. Exploring learning possibilities through facilitating an inquiry-based community action project focused on ECEE, I asked: (1) How might a group of Toronto daycare students, their families, teachers, interested members in the Las Nubes community, and myself (a FES researcher), collaboratively work together to engage with, learn about, and reflect on our local ‘natural worlds’ in dynamic, collaboratively-border crossing, ways? and (2) What co–constructed experiential narratives might be ‘storied’ as pedagogical lessons of engaging with ECEE? How might the outcomes from the project impact others? As the project emerged, participants engaged in exploring the pedagogical opportunities of group forest walks with children through collaboratively experiencing and sharing their different ways of understanding our local world(s) through observation, documentation, and arts-based methods. While finding shared migratory species was the initial interest, what developed was a collaborative project connecting and sharing the situated learning experiences and understandings of conducting group forest walks and related ECEE activities from each site, aiming to encourage further forest explorations with young children. The study does this by providing a narrative inquiry focused on sharing co-constructed stories and knowledge which grew out of the project. Major narrative themes which emerged were: navigating systemic barriers of/through ECEE practice; ECEE collaboration with/between all ages and experience levels; navigating ethics in practice, safety/risk in ECEE, Stand-out ECEE activities, and children’s expressed EE interests

Discourse and religion in educational practice

    Get PDF
Despite the existence of long-held binaries between secular and sacred, private and public spaces, school and religious literacies in many contemporary societies, the significance of religion and its relationship to education and society more broadly has become increasingly topical. Yet, it is only recently that the investigation of the nexus of discourse and religion in educational practice has started to receive some scholarly attention. In this chapter, religion is understood as a cultural practice, historically situated and embedded in specific local and global contexts. This view of religion stresses the social alongside the subjective or experiential dimensions. It explores how through active participation and apprenticeship in culturally appropriate practices and behaviors often mediated intergenerationally and the mobilisation of linguistic and other semiotic resources but also affective, social and material resources, membership in religious communities is constructed and affirmed. The chapter reviews research strands that have explored different aspects of discourse and religion in educational practice as a growing interdisciplinary field. Research strands have examined the place and purpose of religion in general and evangelical Christianity in particular in English Language Teaching (ELT) programmes and the interplay of religion and teaching and learning in a wide range of religious and increasingly secular educational contexts. They provide useful insights for scholars of discourse studies to issues of identity, socialisation, pedagogy and language policy

This Bachelor’s thesis was done for ABB factory, Helsinki Motors and Generators department. New ways, methods and tools for improving the measurements of rotor's axial flow/disposition in synchronous and induction motors on the final line of assemblage are studied and researched in this thesis. The need and demand for such research was due to the fact that quality problems could appear occasionally in electrical motors, caused by the inaccurate measurements of rotor's position. The aim of this thesis was to find the way and method of measuring that is the easiest, the most secure and could give the most accurate measurement results. First the old method was studied in this thesis and all its problems were revealed. Based on that new ways of measurements were created. New ideas were found also through the interviews with various engineers and testers. For the closer research the laser diode distance measurement sensor Acuity AR-200 was chosen. Its advantages and chances to be the new tool for rotor position measuring were studied. As a result various new methods and tools for measuring the rotor's position were revealed. Some of these ways were confirmed most suitable for such measurements. This Bachelor's thesis functions as a great base for the further studies in this field

Organic Archetypal Patterns in Literature: Origin, Meanings, Interpretations

    No full text
The article studies the role and functions of organic archetypal patterns based on the concept of the Tree in literary texts, to which it brings a rich variety of emotive and cultural associations. Being ontologically and epistemologically grounded in the surrounding ecosystems, organic archetypal patterns as a mode of figural modeling run through genres of different epochs and inform their content with a naturalized view of themes, motifs, and situations, which make up the fabric of a work of fiction. Literary figures of this type have their roots in mythological consciousness that at a certain level of human development was instrumental in the categorization of the world and construction of cultural codes as objectivized forms of sensory perception, as pre-discursive human cognitive activity; they have retained till today the symbolic potency of those mythic structures and religious conceptions, often hidden from an uneducated mind. We hypothesize that archetypal patterns forming meaningful connections of language with myth, religion, and art, are used by authors to ensure an integrated understanding of a particular literary piece or its part.
