    Strange Carers

    The present comment focuses on the distinction between attachment as bond formation and expectations of availability and responsiveness (security) within attachment relationships. We enumerate key components of bonding and functions of carer secure base support. Our analysis has implications for design and suggests that robots are unlikely to serve effectively as sole carers. Even with robots as part-time carers, attachment-like bonds would likely focus on human carers. Similarly, although infants and children would certainly build expectations regarding the availability and responsiveness of robot carers, the quality of human care would probably be the determining influence on later development and competence. Notwithstanding their limitations of robots as attachment figures they have considerable potential to extend parental care and enrich infant exploration.     Algoriphagus machipongonensis sp. nov., co-isolated with a colonial choanoflagellate

    A Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming bacterial strain, PR1[superscript T], was isolated from a mud core sample containing colonial choanoflagellates near Hog Island, Virginia, USA. Strain PR1[superscript T] grew optimally at 30 °C and with 3 % (w/v) NaCl. Strain PR1[superscript T] contained MK-7 as the major menaquinone as well as carotenoids but lacked pigments of the flexirubin-type. The predominant fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0 (29.4 %), iso-C17 : 1ω9c (18.5 %) and summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω6c and/or C16 : 1ω7c; 11.3 %). The major polar lipids detected in strain PR1[superscript T] were phosphatidylethanolamine, an unknown phospholipid, an aminophospholipid, an aminolipid and two lipids of unknown character. The DNA G+C content was 38.7 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain PR1[superscript T] fell within the cluster comprising the genus Algoriphagus and was most closely related to Algoriphagus halophilus JC 2051[superscript T] (95.4 % sequence similarity) and Algoriphagus lutimaris S1-3[superscript T] (95.3 % sequence similarity). The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity between strain PR1[superscript T] and the type strains of other species of the genus Algoriphagus were in the range 91–95 %. Differential phenotypic properties and phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness of strain PR1[superscript T] demonstrated that this strain was distinct from other members of the genus Algoriphagus, including its closest relative, A. halophilus. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, phylogenetic and genomic data, strain PR1[superscript T] should be placed in the genus Algoriphagus as a representative of a novel species, for which the name Algoriphagus machipongonensis sp. nov. is proposed.     A Handbook for the Development of Recorded Interviews for a Course in Oral History

    The local community has a natural resource that in all too many places is not being used properly. If this resource is not preserved, it will be lost forever. The natural resource is the experiences and recollections of people, people who have memories of the events that the students of the community have only read about. These people\u27s recollections, with their unique way of conveying them should be saved. Charleston High School is suggesting just such preservation. A class in oral history is under study for Charleston High School. This paper is part of an attempt to lay a foundation for that class. This field study is a handbook for students taking the proposed oral history class at Charleston High School. In the handbook students are introduced to research techniques that may be used in dealing with oral history. The student is also advised as to the manner of selecting an interviewee, contacting that person and setting up a time for an interview. There is a section on research required of an oral history project. The student is also advised that local groups may be of great help in finding background information on community history. Sources such as newspapers and local residents are emphasized. The interview process is discussed with emphasis being placed on specific interview skills such as: asking open ended questions, having a prepared list of questions, having a good understanding of the subject because of proper research done prior to the interview, and showing genuine interest in what the interviewee is saying. The handbook has a section on the use of both audio and video tape for recording oral history interviews. The handbook puts greater emphasis on video recording. The paper has an appendix that explains camera set-up, release forms, and evaluation of student produced material. There is a need for the preservation of local history. The longer we wait the more of it we lose. This paper is an attempt to start the preservation process at Charleston High School

    Increased pathogenicity of pneumococcal serotype 1 is driven by rapid autolysis and release of pneumolysin

    Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 1 is the predominant cause of invasive pneumococcal disease in sub-Saharan Africa, but the mechanism behind its increased invasiveness is not well understood. Here, we use mouse models of lung infection to identify virulence factors associated with severe bacteraemic pneumonia during serotype-1 (ST217) infection. We use BALB/c mice, which are highly resistant to pneumococcal pneumonia when infected with other serotypes. However, we observe 100% mortality and high levels of bacteraemia within 24 hours when BALB/c mice are intranasally infected with ST217. Serotype 1 produces large quantities of pneumolysin, which is rapidly released due to high levels of bacterial autolysis. This leads to substantial levels of cellular cytotoxicity and breakdown of tight junctions between cells, allowing a route for rapid bacterial dissemination from the respiratory tract into the blood. Thus, our results offer an explanation for the increased invasiveness of serotype 1

    Today’s farm, operators have an ever increasing number and variety of resourced under their control. With this increase in resource use, farm operators need guidelines to use in planning resource use and the possible expansion of their farm enterprises. Farm operators can use the resources under their control in various ways, but for each set of price relationships a certain resource combination provides maximum net income. Knowledge of alternative enterprise organizations for various farm situations, at different price levels, is useful in providing guidelines to farmers for organizing their farms. Livestock farmers of Southeastern South Dakota who wish to increase their income have to choose among the alternatives of reorganizing their farms, supplementing their farm income from part-time non-farm employment which comes closer to providing the income they desire. For the farm family that wished to remain in agriculture it is important that they know the kinds and amounts of resources required to earn specified incomes. Often times the specified income is the minimum income that is needed to keep the farmer in agriculture. (see more in text

    Hubble Space Telescope Ultraviolet Spectroscopy of Fourteen Low-Redshift Quasars

    We present low-resolution ultraviolet spectra of 14 low redshift (z<0.8) quasars observed with HST/STIS as part of a Snap project to understand the relationship between quasar outflows and luminosity. By design, all observations cover the CIV emission line. Nine of the quasars are from the Hamburg-ESO catalog, three are from the Palomar-Green catalog, and one is from the Parkes catalog. The sample contains a few interesting quasars including two broad absorption line (BAL) quasars (HE0143-3535, HE0436-2614), one quasar with a mini-BAL (HE1105-0746), and one quasar with associated narrow absorption (HE0409-5004). These BAL quasars are among the brightest known (though not the most luminous) since they lie at z<0.8. We compare the properties of these BAL quasars to the z1.4 Large Bright Quasar samples. By design, our objects sample luminosities in between these two surveys, and our four absorbed objects are consistent with the v ~ L^0.62 relation derived by Laor & Brandt (2002). Another quasar, HE0441-2826, contains extremely weak emission lines and our spectrum is consistent with a simple power-law continuum. The quasar is radio-loud, but has a steep spectral index and a lobe-dominated morphology, which argues against it being a blazar. The unusual spectrum of this quasar resembles the spectra of the quasars PG1407+265, SDSSJ1136+0242, and PKS1004+13 for which several possible explanations have been entertained.Comment: Uses aastex.cls, 21 pages in preprint mode, including 6 figures and 2 tables; accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal (projected vol 133

    A Reduction in Adult Blood Stream Infection and Case Fatality at a Large African Hospital following Antiretroviral Therapy Roll-Out

    Introduction Blood-stream infection (BSI) is one of the principle determinants of the morbidity and mortality associated with advanced HIV infection, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Over the last 10 years, there has been rapid roll-out of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) and cotrimoxazole prophylactic therapy (CPT) in many high HIV prevalence African countries. Methods A prospective cohort of adults with suspected BSI presenting to Queen's Hospital, Malawi was recruited between 2009 and 2010 to describe causes of and outcomes from BSI. Comparison was made with a cohort pre-dating ART roll-out to investigate whether and how ART and CPT have affected BSI. Malawian census and Ministry of Health ART data were used to estimate minimum incidence of BSI in Blantyre district. Results 2,007 patients were recruited, 90% were HIV infected. Since 1997/8, culture-confirmed BSI has fallen from 16% of suspected cases to 10% (p<0.001) and case fatality rate from confirmed BSI has fallen from 40% to 14% (p<0.001). Minimum incidence of BSI was estimated at 0.03/1000 years in HIV uninfected vs. 2.16/1000 years in HIV infected adults. Compared to HIV seronegative patients, the estimated incidence rate-ratio for BSI was 80 (95% CI:46–139) in HIV-infected/untreated adults, 568 (95% CI:302–1069) during the first 3 months of ART and 30 (95% CI:16–59) after 3 months of ART. Conclusions Following ART roll-out, the incidence of BSI has fallen and clinical outcomes have improved markedly. Nonetheless, BSI incidence remains high in the first 3 months of ART despite CPT. Further interventions to reduce BSI-associated mortality in the first 3 months of ART require urgent evaluation

    Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) derived Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) for fluoride, which are provided as Adequate Intake (AI) from all sources, including non-dietary sources. Fluoride is not an essential nutrient. Therefore, no Average Requirement for the performance of essential physiological functions can be defined. Nevertheless, the Panel considered that the setting of an AI is appropriate because of the beneficial effects of dietary fluoride on prevention of dental caries. The AI is based on epidemiological studies (performed before the 1970s) showing an inverse relationship between the fluoride concentration of water and caries prevalence. As the basis for defining the AI, estimates of mean fluoride intakes of children via diet and drinking water with fluoride concentrations at which the caries preventive effect approached its maximum whilst the risk of dental fluorosis approached its minimum were chosen. Except for one confirmatory longitudinal study in US children, more recent studies were not taken into account as they did not provide information on total dietary fluoride intake, were potentially confounded by the use of fluoride-containing dental hygiene products, and did not permit a conclusion to be drawn on a dose-response relationship between fluoride intake and caries risk. The AI of fluoride from all sources (including non-dietary sources) is 0.05 mg/kg body weight per day for both children and adults, including pregnant and lactating women. For pregnant and lactating women, the AI is based on the body weight before pregnancy and lactation. Reliable and representative data on the total fluoride intake of the European population are not available
