    Domesticating the Islamic in/of the Middle East: Theo-Ego-Dynamics of Metropolitan Translation and the Geo-Body Politics of Paratranslation

    This paper tackles the problematics of domesticating the Islamic identity-strand of the Arab Middle East in metropolitan translation in post-Arab Spring Egypt. The researcher particularly engages with the changing politics of cultural translation (from Arabic into English) and their ramification with respect to the changing parameters of both the top-level process of cultural representation of the non-Western Other, and the production conditions enabling the transposition of Ibrahim Essa’s مولانا [Maulana] (Essa 2012) into its English translation The Televangelist (2016) by the Journalist-turned literary translator, Jonathan Wright. Written by the Egyptian journalist-writer, Ibrahim Essa, the novel signals the journalistic entry into Arabic literary production and patronage nuanced by the changing cultural politics of the post-revolutionary context. The novel fictively dramatizes the Egyptian Muslim preacher movement—what has been academically codified in terms of politics of piety and ‘satellite piety’ (Mahmood 2005; Abou Bakr 2013) – and the movement’s enmeshment in the new media technology, power-politics, and the changing political and social identity of contemporary Egypt. The English translation The Televangelist (2016) augurs a similar turn in the production and promotion of Arabic literature in translation marked by the journalistic identity of the translator and the new American University of Cairo Press imprint (AUCP), Hoopoe Fiction (2016), through which the translation (debut production) is launched and promoted. The research aims to address the question of the political impact of carving a niche market for a transfigured cultural politics for the Arab Middle East through the new AUC imprint, Hoopoe Fiction, and its implication for both the politically induced cultural branding of the New Middle East and the interfaith agenda of global governance. Especially if the partner's products do not have selling value because they do not have a brand name, uninteresting packaging, and have no PIRT permit. Moreover, the limitation of the partner is in utilizing technology to support operations and marketing. In community development activity, we have the opportunity to assist partners to increase the attractiveness and selling value of products so that their products can be accepted at souvenir outlets around Ciputri and Cianjur Villages. In addition, we help partners to enhance thier capabilities in technical knowledge and use of technology for operational and promotion. The results of this activity are the product has a brand name and product labels, the creation of innovative, attractive, and nowadays packaging, obtaining PIRT certificates, and finally can sell and diplay the product in the famous souvenir outlets in Cianjur. Besides, increasing partner skills in the use of technology for purchasing production materials and marketing. After the community development activities and mentoring period are over, it is expected to provide benefits for partners to independently expand product distribution to souvenir shops around Cianjur so that they can increase sales and the economy of partner families. Besides, partners can independently use e-commerce and social media as a means of promotion and sales

    Translating Palestinian Women: Re-memory and the Subaltern Geo-Politics of S/Place

    This paper deals with the translational rememory of Palestinian women’s aesthetic activisms and their crossing of bounded borders, generational boundaries, inter-lingual and cross-cultural parameters in activist reclaim of lost places, unspeakable spaces and unspoken-of maternal legacy of Palestinian rememory and re-membering. The paper particularly examines both the generational model of Arab (Egyptian-Palestinian) women’s aesthetic activism and the third wave paradigm of feminist translational theorization to showcase the limitation of the postmodern feminist politics with their enmeshment in the postmodern organization of space, «[de-]territorial discourse of peace» (Newman, 1996, p. 328) and what Chance critiques as «the androcentric slide into gender as a trope in postmodern translation theory» (Flotow, in Kuhiwczak & Littau, 2007, p. 95). Opening a repertoire between Western feminist translation theory, especially in its paradigmatic shift towards performativity and paratextuality (Flotow, 1996, 2007, 2009; Littau, 2000; Castro Vázquez & Andrews, 2009; Castro Vázquez, 2013), black feminist theoretical insights into re-memory and intersectionality (Morrison, 1989; Crenshaw, 1989) and the still undertow turn into mediality in translation studies (Littau, 1997, 2016; Pérez-González, 2014), the paper reads the translational resignification of Sahar Hamouda and Hind al-Fitiany’s rememories in Once Upon a Time in Jerusalem (2010) and Radwa Ashour’s الطنطورية (al-Tantourieyyah, 2010) into Kay Heikkinen’s The Woman from Tantoura (2014). The paper examines the implication of the translational re-signification with respect to the questions of political geography, geographical identity and what Smith (2012) formulates in terms of subaltern geopolitics of identities. The paper approaches translation as both a trope for feminized rewriting of Palestinian diasporas and an actual practice embedded the materiality of communication, the mediality of transposition (Littau, 2015) and seriality of translating Pandora’s tongues (Littau, 2000). The paper argument is multi-fold: first, the intersectionality of Palestinian women’s positioning and re-memory as the media for communication and configuration of the maternal legacy of space and place. Ashour and Hamouda’s narration projects are spurred by the kindred spirit of matriarchy that leads Ashour to fictionalize her share of Palestinian women-specific stories of diaspora, and drives Hamouda to convert her Palestinian mother’s account from orality into textuality. Second, the paper argues for the materiality of signification in Hamouda’s text and its structuring of subaltern geo-politics of space and place. The latter re-members the occupational divide of political geography through both serialized (collaborative) rememories of their placed identity as Jerusalemite and visual construction of peopled land and image populated narrative space —against the de-population and mythical de-peopling of the land without a people. Third is the power politics of inter-lingual/cultural ideological mediation of space and place in the English translation of Ashour’s novel. This ideological mediation sets the de-framing (de-mapping: actual omission of maps) of the geographicity and historicity of the narrative in tune with the de-territorial discourse of peace, post-modern organization of space and the postmodern feminist politics —with its occlusion of the difference between women and the question of nation for a «nation without a state» (Smith, 2012, p. 20). Finally, the paper argues for the Palestinian feminist politics of S/Place, whose localized geographical identity becomes the point of departure to rewriting histories, re-membering dismembered geography, and un-speaking the unspeakable Palestinian ‘right to return’

Minat sajak di Indonesia cukup rendah dikarenakannya sajak jarang ditampilkan dalam media modern, dan lebih sering terdapat di media cetak seperti buku. Sementara dijaman kini masyarakat lebih memilih memakai media yang efisien seperti telepon genggam mobile yang dimana dapat mengakses banyak informasi hanya dengan mengakses internet serta media sosial. Sajak berfungsi untuk mengutarakan isi hati penulis maupun dipakai sebagai catatan harian yang juga dapat dijadikan record sejarah, oleh karena itu pada masa reformasi banyak sajak yang menceritakan pemerintahan Indonesia. Salah satu penulis sajak yang menceritakan keindahan tanah air Indonesia Ialah Almarhum Sitor Situmorang. Beliau sangat berperan dalam literasi di Indonesia, merupakan jurnalistik, penyair, serta sempat berperan sebagai politikus. Oleh karena itu sangat sayang jika sedikit anak muda yang mengenali beliau, keluarga beliau juga mengupayakan untuk membuat sebuah museum untuk menyetor karya Almarhum. Menurut hasil survei kuesioner sebagian besar menjawab minat dengan sastra sajak namun merasa media sajak di perangkat digital kurang sehingga jarang melihat sajak. Banyak juga yang sulit memahami sajak sehingga membutuhkan bantuan ilustrasi serta audio. Dari masalah berikut Penulis ingin membuat buku digital interaktif untuk menarik anak muda Indonesia minat dengan Sajak Indonesia

    MESCLANDO METODOLOGIAS PARA A ANÁLISE DA GOVERNANÇA EM UNIDADES DE CONSERVAÇÃO

    The governance system of a particular Conservation Unit must be adapted to the specifics of its historical and social context in order to be able to generate lasting results in terms of conservation. In order to contribute to the improvement of the governance experiences in Conservation Units present in the Coastal Zone, different methods of analysis were used that together allowed to understand the main characteristics that make up the governance of these areas. The Environmental Protection Area (EPA) of Lagoa Verde, located in the Coastal Zone of Rio Grande Sul, Brazil was used as a case study. Due to the proximity of urban areas, several uses are opposed to their creation objectives, mainly due to the lack of information of the community, deficiencies in the physical, human and financial structure of the EPA and inertia of the Public Power. In this scenario, the need for solidification of existing governance processes is evident, based on planning, capacity building, information, education, transparency and community involvement in decision making. In this way, this research intends to contribute to the development of good governance in the Lagoa Verde EPA, from a systemic perspective on the historical, cultural, economic, political and environmental aspects that permeate it. To do so, we used data from bibliographical and documentary researches, field trips, semi-structured interviews and face-toface observation in the Management Council.O sistema de governança de uma determinada Unidade de Conservação deve ser adaptado às especificidades de seu contexto histórico e social para assim conseguir gerar resultados duradouros em termos de conservação. Em busca de contribuir para o aprimoramento das experiências de governança em Unidades de Conservação presentes na Zona Costeira, foram utilizados diferentes métodos de análise que juntos permitiram compreender as principais características que compõem a governança dessas áreas. Foi utilizada, como estudo de caso, a Área de Proteção Ambiental – APA da Lagoa Verde, localizada na ZonaCosteira do Rio Grande Sul, Brasil. Devido à proximidade das zonas urbanas são observados diversos usos antagônicos aos  seus objetivos de criação, que ocorrem principalmente pela falta de informação da comunidade, carências na estrutura física, humana e financeira da APA e inércia do Poder Público. Neste cenário é evidente a necessidade de solidificação dos processos de governança existentes, tendo como premissas: planejamento, capacitação, informação, educação, transparência e envolvimento da comunidade na tomada de decisão. Desta forma, esta pesquisa pretende contribuir para o desenvolvimento da boa governança na APA da Lagoa Verde, a partir de um olhar sistêmico sobre os aspectos históricos, culturais, econômicos, políticos e ambientais que a permeiam.     A Multimodal Discourse Analysis of Political Speeches: The Case of Donald Trump’s 2016 Election Speeches

    This paper investigates the different verbal and non-verbal meaning making resources manifested in the speeches of Akron, Ohio and Phoenix, Arizona delivered by Donald Trump during his presidential campaign in 2016.  The way verbal and non-verbal resources combine or interact intersemiotically unravels how Donald Trump attempts to affect his audience and reveal his populist leadership. For that end, the researcher carried out an analysis that is divided into two sections. Section one is devoted to a ‘themes’ analysis to isolate the overarching themes and illuminate the major topics addressed by President Donald Trump to seek his audience’s support. Section two follows SF-MDA which relies on Halliday’s systemic functional linguistics (Halliday, 1978, 1994; Halliday Matthiessen, 2004/2014) for the analysis of verbal meaning- making resources and Kress and Van Leeuwen’s visual grammar (1996/2006) for the analysis of non-verbal resources. The analysis reveals that both verbal and non-verbal meaning-making resources, in terms of representational, interactive and compositional meanings, work intersemiotically to deliver a full account of meaning and unravel Donald Trump's populist leadership
