Wide Field Observations of the Ursa Minor dSph galaxy
Ursa Minor (UMi) is one of the closest satellites of the Milky Way (d=69
kpc). It is possibly a disrupted dSph interacting with the external Galactic
halo. This makes its study quite necessary in the forementioned context. In
this paper we present preliminary results of a wide field photometry survey of
UMi and discuss the presence of an intermediate-age population and tidal tails

Competing many-body interactions in systems of trapped ions
We propose and theoretically analyse an experimental configuration in which
lasers induce 3-spin interactions between trapped ions.By properly choosing the
intensities and frequencies of the lasers, 3-spin couplings may be dominant or
comparable to 2-spin terms and magnetic fields. In this way, trapped ions can
be used to study exotic quantum phases which do not have a counterpart in
nature. We study the conditions for the validity of the effective 3-spin
Hamiltonian, and predict qualitatively the quantum phase diagram of the system.Comment: RevTex4 file, color figure
Investigating Fatigue Performance on the Foamed Asphalt Specimens Generated Using Different Foam Properties
An evaluation of fatigue resistance for foamed asphalt mixture is very demanding since the binder is not continuously distributed on the aggregate surface and this mixtures contains water, the content of which dramatically affects the mechanical properties. This paper discusses the results of laboratory fatigue testingon the foamed asphalt mixtures in which the specimens are generated using three different foamed bitumen properties. Foamed bitumen as the binder was produced at three different foaming water content (FWC) at a temperature of 180oC using a 70/100 pen. The aggregates were mechanically mixed with foamed bitumen using a Hobart mixer. The resulting mixtures were then compacted using a gyratory compactor to generatespecimen with diameter of 100 mm. The specimens were fatigue tested at various stress levels at a temperature of 20oC following a curing period of 3 days at 40oC. Overall, fatigue performance of foamed asphalt can be identified based upon both stress and strain for mixtures produced at FWC 1%, 5%, and 10%
Sequential Quantum Cloning
Not all unitary operations upon a set of qubits can be implemented by
sequential interactions between each qubit and an ancillary system. We analyze
the specific case of sequential quantum cloning 1->M and prove that the minimal
dimension D of the ancilla grows linearly with the number of clones M. In
particular, we obtain D = 2M for symmetric universal quantum cloning and D =
M+1 for symmetric phase-covariant cloning. Furthermore, we provide a recipe for
the required ancilla-qubit interactions in each step of the sequential

Critical Lines and Massive Phases in Quantum Spin Ladders with Dimerization
We determine the existence of critical lines in dimerized quantum spin
ladders in their phase diagram of coupling constants using the finite-size DMRG
algorithm. We consider both staggered and columnar dimerization patterns, and
antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic inter-leg couplings. The existence of
critical phases depends on the precise combination of these patterns. The
nature of the massive phases separating the critical lines are characterized
with generalized string order parameters that determine their valence bond

DGSAT: Dwarf Galaxy Survey with Amateur Telescopes II. A catalogue of isolated nearby edge-on disk galaxies and the discovery of new low surface brightness systems
The connection between the bulge mass or bulge luminosity in disk galaxies
and the number, spatial and phase space distribution of associated dwarf
galaxies is a discriminator between cosmological simulations related to galaxy
formation in cold dark matter and generalized gravity models. Here, a nearby
sample of isolated Milky Way class edge-on galaxies is introduced, to
facilitate observational campaigns to detect the associated families of dwarf
galaxies at low surface brightness. Three galaxy pairs with at least one of the
targets being edge-on are also introduced. About 60% of the catalogued isolated
galaxies contain bulges of different size, while the remaining objects appear
to be bulge-less. Deep images of NGC 3669 (small bulge, with NGC 3625 at the
edge of the image) and NGC 7814 (prominent bulge), obtained with a 0.4-m
aperture, are also presented, resulting in the discovery of two new dwarf
galaxy candidates, NGC3669-DGSAT-3 and NGC7814-DGSAT-7. Eleven additional low
surface brightness galaxies are identified, previously notified with low
quality measurement flags in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Integrated
magnitudes, surface brightnesses, effective radii, Sersic indices, axis ratios,
and projected distances to their putative major hosts are displayed. At least
one of the galaxies, NGC3625-DGSAT-4, belongs with a surface brightness of
approximately 26 mag per arcsec^2 and effective radius >1.5 kpc to the class of
ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). NGC3669-DGSAT-3, the galaxy with lowest surface
