Magnetic transitions in Pr2NiO4 single crystal
The magnetic properties of a stoichiometric Pr2NiO4 single crystal have been examined by means of the temperature dependence of the complex ac susceptibility and the isothermal magnetization in fields up to 200 kOe at T=4.2 K. Three separate phases have been identified and their anisotropic character has been analyzed. A collinear antiferromagnetic phase appears first between TN = 325 K and Tc1 = 115 K, where the Pr ions are polarized by an internal magnetic field. At Tc1 a first modification of the magnetic structure occurs in parallel with a structural phase transition (Bmab to P42/ncm). This magnetic transition has a first‐order character and involves both the out‐of‐plane and the in‐plane spin components (magnetic modes gx and gxcyfz, respectively). A second magnetic transition having also a first‐order character is also clearly identified at Tc2 = 90 K which corresponds to a spin reorientation process (gxcyfz to cxgyaz magnetic modes). It should be noted as well that the out‐of‐phase component of χac shows a peak around 30 K which reflects the coexistence of both magnetic configurations in a wide temperature interval. Finally, two field‐induced transitions have been observed at 4.2 K when the field is directed along the c axis. We propose that the high‐field anomaly arises from a metamagnetic transition of the weak ferromagnetic component, similarly to La2CuO4

1,1′-Fc(4-C6H4CO2Et)2and its unusual salt derivative withZ′ = 5,catena-[Na+]2[1,1′-Fc(4-C6H4CO2−)2]·0.6H2O [1,1′-Fc = (η5-(C5H4)2Fe]
The neutral diethyl 4,4'-(ferrocene-1,1'-diyl)dibenzoate, Fe[[eta]5-(C5H4)(4-C6H4CO2Et)]2 (I), yields (II) (following base hydrolysis) as the unusual complex salt poly[disodium bis[diethyl 4,4'-(ferrocene-1,1'-diyl)dibenzoate] 0.6-hydrate] or [Na+]2[Fe{[eta]5-(C5H4)-4-C6H4CO_2^-}2]·0.6H2O with Z' = 5. Compound (I) crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P\bar 1, with two molecules having similar geometry in the asymmetric unit (Z' = 2). The salt complex (II) crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pbca, with the asymmetric unit comprising poly[decasodium pentakis[diethyl 4,4'-(ferrocene-1,1'-diyl)dibenzoate] trihydrate] or [Na+]10[Fe{[eta]5-(C5H4)-4-C6H4CO_2^-}2]5·3H2O. The five independent 1,1'-Fc[(4-C6H4CO2)-]2 dianions stack in an offset ladder (stepped) arrangement with the ten benzoates mutually oriented cisoid towards and bonded to a central layer comprising the ten Na+ ions and three water molecules [1,1'-Fc = [eta]5-(C5H4)2Fe]. The five dianions differ in the cisoid orientations of their pendant benzoate groups, with four having their -C6H4- groups mutually oriented at interplanar angles from 0.6 (3) to 3.2 (3)° (as [pi]...[pi] stacked C6 rings) and interacting principally with Na+ ions. The fifth dianion is distorted and opens up to an unprecedented -C6H4- interplanar angle of 18.6 (3)° through bending of the two 4-C6H4CO2 groups and with several ionic interactions involving the three water molecules (arranged as one-dimensional zigzag chains in the lattice). Overall packing comprises two-dimensional layers of Na+ cations coordinated mainly by the carboxylate O atoms, and one-dimensional water chains. The non-polar Fc(C6H4)2 groups are arranged perpendicular to the layers and mutually interlock through a series of efficient C-H...[pi] stacking contacts in a herringbone fashion to produce an overall segregation of polar and non-polar entities
Report on Tests and Measurements of Hadronic Interaction Properties with Air Showers
We present a summary of recent tests and measurements of hadronic interaction
properties with air showers. This report has a special focus on muon density
measurements. Several experiments reported deviations between simulated and
recorded muon densities in extensive air showers, while others reported no
discrepancies. We combine data from eight leading air shower experiments to
cover shower energies from PeV to tens of EeV. Data are combined using the
z-scale, a unified reference scale based on simulated air showers.
Energy-scales of experiments are cross-calibrated. Above 10 PeV, we find a muon
deficit in simulated air showers for each of the six considered hadronic
interaction models. The deficit is increasing with shower energy. For the
models EPOS-LHC and QGSJet-II.04, the slope is found significant at 8 sigma.Comment: Submitted to the Proceedings of UHECR201

Time-Integrated Neutrino Source Searches with 10 Years of IceCube Data.
This Letter presents the results from pointlike neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a pointlike source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above ∼1 TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of 2.9σ after accounting for statistical trials from the entire catalog. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3σ significance. The southern catalog is consistent with background. These results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the 10 years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector

Combined sensitivity to the neutrino mass ordering with JUNO, the IceCube Upgrade, and PINGU
The ordering of the neutrino mass eigenstates is one of the fundamental open questions in neutrino physics. While current-generation neutrino oscillation experiments are able to produce moderate indications on this ordering, upcoming experiments of the next generation aim to provide conclusive evidence. In this paper we study the combined performance of the two future multi-purpose neutrino oscillation experiments JUNO and the IceCube Upgrade, which employ two very distinct and complementary routes toward the neutrino mass ordering. The approach pursued by the 20 kt medium-baseline reactor neutrino experiment JUNO consists of a careful investigation of the energy spectrum of oscillated νe produced by ten nuclear reactor cores. The IceCube Upgrade, on the other hand, which consists of seven additional densely instrumented strings deployed in the center of IceCube DeepCore, will observe large numbers of atmospheric neutrinos that have undergone oscillations affected by Earth matter. In a joint fit with both approaches, tension occurs between their preferred mass-squared differences Δm312=m32-m12 within the wrong mass ordering. In the case of JUNO and the IceCube Upgrade, this allows to exclude the wrong ordering at >5σ on a timescale of 3-7 years - even under circumstances that are unfavorable to the experiments' individual sensitivities. For PINGU, a 26-string detector array designed as a potential low-energy extension to IceCube, the inverted ordering could be excluded within 1.5 years (3 years for the normal ordering) in a joint analysis

Efficient propagation of systematic uncertainties from calibration to analysis with the SnowStorm method in IceCube
Efficient treatment of systematic uncertainties that depend on a large number of nuisance parameters is a persistent difficulty in particle physics and astrophysics experiments. Where low-level effects are not amenable to simple parameterization or re-weighting, analyses often rely on discrete simulation sets to quantify the effects of nuisance parameters on key analysis observables. Such methods may become computationally untenable for analyses requiring high statistics Monte Carlo with a large number of nuisance degrees of freedom, especially in cases where these degrees of freedom parameterize the shape of a continuous distribution. In this paper we present a method for treating systematic uncertainties in a computationally efficient and comprehensive manner using a single simulation set with multiple and continuously varied nuisance parameters. This method is demonstrated for the case of the depth-dependent effective dust distribution within the IceCube Neutrino Telescope

Search for sources of astrophysical neutrinos using seven years of icecube cascade events
Low-background searches for astrophysical neutrino sources anywhere in the sky can be performed using cascade events induced by neutrinos of all flavors interacting in IceCube with energies as low as ∼1 TeV. Previously we showed that, even with just two years of data, the resulting sensitivity to sources in the southern sky is competitive with IceCube and ANTARES analyses using muon tracks induced by charge current muon neutrino interactions - especially if the neutrino emission follows a soft energy spectrum or originates from an extended angular region. Here, we extend that work by adding five more years of data, significantly improving the cascade angular resolution, and including tests for point-like or diffuse Galactic emission to which this data set is particularly well suited. For many of the signal candidates considered, this analysis is the most sensitive of any experiment to date. No significant clustering was observed, and thus many of the resulting constraints are the most stringent to date. In this paper we will describe the improvements introduced in this analysis and discuss our results in the context of other recent work in neutrino astronomy
Search for astrophysical sources of neutrinos using cascade events in IceCube
The IceCube neutrino observatory has established the existence of a flux of
high-energy astrophysical neutrinos inconsistent with the expectation from
atmospheric backgrounds at a significance greater than . This flux has
been observed in analyses of both track events from muon neutrino interactions
and cascade events from interactions of all neutrino flavors. Searches for
astrophysical neutrino sources have focused on track events due to the
significantly better angular resolution of track reconstructions. To date, no
such sources have been confirmed. Here we present the first search for
astrophysical neutrino sources using cascades interacting in IceCube with
deposited energies as small as 1 TeV. No significant clustering was observed in
a selection of 263 cascades collected from May 2010 to May 2012. We show that
compared to the classic approach using tracks, this statistically-independent
search offers improved sensitivity to sources in the southern sky, especially
if the emission is spatially extended or follows a soft energy spectrum. This
enhancement is due to the low background from atmospheric neutrinos forming
cascade events and the additional veto of atmospheric neutrinos at declinations
