    Induction of synchronized estrus in dairy goats with different gonadotrophins.

    The objective of this study was to evaluate lhe efficiency of two gonadotrophins in induction of estrus in dairy goats. A total of 47 dairy goats were randomly divided according to breed into two treatments (T1 and T2). In both treatments, goats received intravaginal sponges containing 60 mg medroxy-progesterone acetate for six days and sub- vulvar administration of 22.5 mg of d-cloprostenol at the time of sponge insertion. In TI (n=23) and T2 (n=24), animaIs received intramuscuIar administration of 200 lU and 250 lU of eCG and hCG, respectively. After sponge removal, goats were monitored twice daily (06:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m.) with bucks. Animals were bred at lhe start of estrus and at each 12 hours interval until lhe end of estrus. Pregnancy was checked by ultrasonography 63 days after breeding. Percentage of animals in estrus did not differ (P>0.05) between TI (95.6%) and T2 (78.3%). There was no effect (P>0.05) of treatment on interval from sponge removal to lhe Start of estrus (IE) and duration of estrus (DE). The" average IE was 48.0 + 9.4h and 46.2+ 8.4h for eCG and hCG, respectively. The average DE was 20.7 + 11.9h and 18.8 + 9.0h for eCG and hCG, respectively. Pregnancy cate did not differ (P>0.05) between eCG (77.3%) and hCG (61.1%). Results of this study showed that estrus can be efficiently induced in female goats outside lhe breeding season with both eCG and hCG

    Operatic Mysticisms: Mountains, Deserts, Waterscapes examines the ways we encounter environments as readers/viewers of operas, literature, film, and sound recordings, and how each medium requires different detail-gathering techniques. Respective to the previously mentioned mediums, Sun & Sea (2017), Mount Analogue (1952), El Mar La Mar (2017), and Energy Field (2010) are analyzed by engaging with environmental media studies and invention. Reflecting the nature of each landscape—summits of mountains, aporias of deserts, and mysteries of waterscapes—an elemental approach is taken in investigating how these spaces may be noticed, internalized, recorded, and traversed by both the artist and viewer. With an emphasis on limitations of mediums, language, and equipment, this thesis argues that artists/readers/viewers in turn inhabit these rendered environments—while a looped response (termed as operatic mysticism) threads ekphrasis and imagination before and during the production, in the art proper, and in our minds during and well-after consumption

    Potential landslide hazard in a zone of stabilised earthen embankments illustrated by Wysoka Górka in Chełm

    Plant cover is an important element in the management of earthen structures and slopes improving their aesthetic values and limiting their vulnerability to denudation processes. With regard to landslide hazards, an important aspect in the presence of plants is the effect of their root systems on the shear strength of the substrate and, consequently, on slope stability. The aim of the study was to determine the impact of the tree cover at the Wysoka Górka archaeological site on the stability of the earthen embankment on Góra Katedralna in Chełm (Lublin Province). These architectural elements originate from the times of Chełm’s glory in the fist half of the 13th century, when it became the capital of Halych-Volhynia Duchy and a residence of Prince Danylo Romanovych (Isaiecić 1999). The research involved identifiation of the geological structure of the embankment (surveying, measurement of the fitration coeffiient) and laboratory determination of the geotechnical parameters of the soil (particle size distribution and soil compressive strength measured in a triaxial compression apparatus). In the next stage of the study, stability was calculated with limit equilibrium methods in the GeoStudio program. Standard calculations of the embankment stability were performed and the stability coeffiient for the slope devoid of vegetation and the tree-covered slope were compared assuming zero suction pressure. The shear strength parameters of soil reinforced by plant roots were adopted following the recommendations specifid by Hubble et al. (2013).     The Discriminatory Legalism Strategy and Hate Speech Cases in Poland. The Role of the Commissioner for Human Rights in Fighting Discrimination

    The regress of liberal democracy in the world has been progressing for years and the number of countries with the full democracy index is decreasing [Economist Intelligence Unit 2018, 2019; Freedom House 2018]. One of the serious threats to the rule of law and the human rights in modern democracy has become discriminatory legalism which is both strategy and weapon [Weyland 2013]. In order to weaken or marginalize the opposition and “rebellious” citizens, public authorities apply discriminatory legal instruments and democratic rules depending on who they are concerned with. Public authorities do this because of political views and use exclusion rhetoric, a language of hatred, stigmatizing all “strangers”, at last use hate speech on the Internet and beyond. The weaponization of hate speech is a convenient instrument for political struggle and the fight against inconvenient opponents. Hate speech is also used by far-right and nationalist organizations in the public sphere, which operate in an atmosphere of consent to their radical behaviour. Political hate speech plays an important role in the discriminatory legal strategy. Poland is included in the group of countries with flawed democracy (Article 7(1) TEU since 2017). The authorities introduced changes in law (which were defined as the “Frankensteinisation of legislation” by the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe [PACE] in 2019), democratic institutions and the prosecution applies a discriminatory legalism strategy. This problem is highlighted by the current Commissioner for Human Rights which is an independent institution in the field of fighting hate speech (except a few independent media and NGOs informing about the hate speech phenomenon). Many of hate speech cases are discontinued or not taken up by the prosecution. The numbers of cases of hate speech and hate incidents are increasing but the Polish authorities use the underreporting mechanism. The Ombudsman warns that only 5% of cases are reported to the police.     Evaluation of Arenaria montana L. hydroethanolic extract as a chemopreventive food ingredient: A case study focusing a dairy product (yogurt)

    Natural ingredients are valuable options to be exploited in the design of innovative food formulations with health benefits. Therefore, it was evaluated the potential use of Arenaria montana L. hydroethanolic extract (rich in apigenin derivatives) as a chemopreventive agent in functional foods. Apigenin is recognized as inhibiting VEGFR-2, which is the key receptor involved in angiogenesis. The obtained extract was also able to inhibit the VEGFR-2 phosphorylation through an enzymatic assay (IC 50 = ~63 µg/mL). Thereafter, free and microencapsulated forms were incorporated in yogurt. The obtained products maintained the nutritional value along the tested 3 days of storage, as also free sugars and fatty acids profiles, in comparison with the control samples. Nevertheless, the VEGFR-2 phosphorylation inhibition was not exhibited as intended.     Clomipramine and alprazolam to treat noise phobia in a dog: case report

    Behavioral disorders, including noise phobia, have a great impact on small animals internal medicine, impairing their quality of life as well as their life expectancy. The objective of this work is to report the case of a male dog who suffered from noise phobia and panic attacks triggered by thunderstorms and fireworks, and did not respond to previous training and treatment. After clinical and laboratory evaluations, he was treated with 2mg/kg clomipramine twice daily for 90 days associated with 0.06mg/kg alprazolam as needed on those days of intense fear. During the first week of treatment, a significant improvement could already be observed, with reduction in destructive behaviors, which lingered on for up to eight months of follow-up. The treatment stabilized the clinical condition and improved the patient's quality of life

    There is no abstract available for this languageLublin jest dla bio- i topoklimatologii cennym obszarem badawczym, gdyż ze względu na urozmaiconą rzeźbę terenu oraz obecność licznych rozcięć wąwozowych wykorzystywanychprzez człowieka charakteryzuje się dużym zróżnicowaniem mikroklimatu. W pracy przedstawiono zróżnicowanie przestrzenne warunków bioklimatycznych na obszarze miasta, wykorzystującw tym celu nowy wskaźnik bioklimatyczny Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Otrzymane mapy biotopoklimatyczne opracowane zostały w odniesieniu do sześciu określonych scenariuszy pogodowych. Uzyskane obrazy, będące teoretycznym przybliżeniem warunków rzeczywistych, pozwalają ocenić wpływ rzeźby oraz typów użytkowania terenu na kształtowanie warunków biometeorologicznych obszarów zurbanizowanych. W analizowanych scenariuszach pogodowych i przy uwzględnieniu rzeźby Lublina najwyższe modelowane wartości UTCI charakteryzują zbocza wąwozów oraz dolin o południowej ekspozycji. W obszarach tych prognozowane są warunki biometeorologiczne, odzwierciedlające obciążenia cieplne „bardzo silny stres ciepła”
