Non-immune fetal hydrops: etiology and outcome according to gestational age at diagnosis.
OBJECTIVE: Fetal hydrops is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. The etiology and outcome of fetal hydrops may differ according to the gestational age at diagnosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cause, evolution and outcome of non-immune fetal hydrops (NIFH), according to the gestational age at diagnosis. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study of all singleton pregnancies complicated by NIFH, at the Fetal Medicine Unit at St George's University Hospital, London, UK, between 2000 and 2018. All fetuses had detailed anomaly and cardiac ultrasound scans, karyotyping and infection screening. Prenatal diagnostic and therapeutic intervention, gestational age at diagnosis and delivery, as well as pregnancy outcome, were recorded. Regression analysis was used to test for potential association between possible risk factors and perinatal mortality. RESULTS: We included 273 fetuses with NIFH. The etiology of the condition varied significantly in the three trimesters. Excluding 30 women who declined invasive testing, the cause of NIFH was defined as unknown in 62 of the remaining 243 cases (25.5%). Chromosomal aneuploidy was the most common cause of NIFH in the first trimester. It continued to be a significant etiologic factor in the second trimester, along with congenital infection. In the third trimester, the most common etiology was cardiovascular abnormality. Among the 152 (55.7%) women continuing the pregnancy, 48 (31.6%) underwent fetal intervention, including the insertion of pleuroamniotic shunts, fetal blood transfusion and thoracentesis. Fetal intervention was associated significantly with lower perinatal mortality (odds ratio (OR), 0.30 (95% CI, 0.14-0.61); P 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: An earlier gestational age at diagnosis of NIFH was associated with an increased risk of aneuploidy and worse pregnancy outcome, including a higher risk of perinatal loss. Fetal therapy was associated significantly with lower perinatal mortality. © 2020 The Authors. Hydrodynamic theory of an electron gas
The generalised hydrodynamic theory of an electron gas, which does not rely
on an assumption of a local equilibrium, is derived as the long-wave limit of a
kinetic equation. Apart from the common hydrodynamics variables the theory
includes the tensor fields of the higher moments of the distribution function.
In contrast to the Bloch hydrodynamics, the theory leads to the correct plasmon
dispersion and in the low frequency limit recovers the Navies-Stocks
hydrodynamics. The linear approximation to the generalised hydrodynamics is

Investment Opportunities Forecasting: Extending the Grammar of a GP-based Tool
In this paper we present a new version of a GP financial forecasting tool, called EDDIE 8. The novelty of this version is that it allows the GP to search in the space of indicators, instead of using pre-specified ones. We compare EDDIE 8 with its predecessor, EDDIE 7, and find that new and improved solutions can be found. Analysis also shows that, on average, EDDIE 8's best tree performs better than the one of EDDIE 7. The above allows us to characterize EDDIE 8 as a valuable forecasting tool
Reporting on data monitoring committees in neonatal randomised controlled trials is inconsistent
Aim: To evaluate the reported use of Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs), the frequency of interim analysis, pre-specified stopping rules and early trial termination in neonatal randomised controlled trials (RCTs). Methods: We reviewed neonatal RCTs published in four high impact general medical journals, specifically looking at safety issues including documented involvement of a DMC, stated interim analysis, stopping rules and early trial termination. We searched all journal issues over an 11-year period (2003-2013) and recorded predefined parameters on each item for RCTs meeting inclusion criteria. Results: Seventy neonatal trials were identified in four general medical journals: Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), British Medical Journal and Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA). 43 (61.4%) studies reported the presence of a DMC, 36 (51.4%) explicitly mentioned interim analysis; stopping rules were reported in 15 (21.4%) RCTs and 7 (10%) trials were terminated early. The NEJM most frequently reported these parameters compared to the other three journals reviewed. Conclusion: While the majority of neonatal RCTs report on DMC involvement and interim analysis there is still scope for improvement. Clear documentation of safety related issues should be a central component of reporting in neonatal trials involving newborn infants
Hysteresis effect due to the exchange Coulomb interaction in short-period superlattices in tilted magnetic fields
We calculate the ground-state of a two-dimensional electron gas in a
short-period lateral potential in magnetic field, with the Coulomb
electron-electron interaction included in the Hartree-Fock approximation. For a
sufficiently short period the dominant Coulomb effects are determined by the
exchange interaction. We find numerical solutions of the self-consistent
equations that have hysteresis properties when the magnetic field is tilted and
increased, such that the perpendicular component is always constant. This
behavior is a result of the interplay of the exchange interaction with the
energy dispersion and the spin splitting. We suggest that hysteresis effects of
this type could be observable in magneto-transport and magnetization
experiments on quantum-wire and quantum-dot superlattices.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, Revtex, to appear in Phys. Rev.
A Search for Propylene Oxide and Glycine in Sagittarius B2 (LMH) and Orion
We have used the Mopra Telescope to search for glycine and the simple chiral
molecule propylene oxide in the Sgr B2 (LMH) and Orion KL, in the 3-mm band. We
have not detected either species, but have been able to put sensitive upper
limits on the abundances of both molecules. The 3-sigma upper limits derived
for glycine conformer I are 3.7 x 10^{14} cm^{-2} in both Orion-KL and Sgr B2
(LMH), comparable to the reported detections of conformer I by Kuan et al.
However, as our values are 3-sigma upper limits rather than detections we
conclude that this weighs against confirming the detection of Kuan et al. We
find upper limits for the glycine II column density of 7.7 x 10^{12} cm^{-2} in
both Orion-KL and Sgr B2 (LMH), in agreement with the results of Combes et al.
The results presented here show that glycine conformer II is not present in the
extended gas at the levels detected by Kuan et al. for conformer I. Our ATCA
results (Jones et al.) have ruled out the detection of glycine (both conformers
I and II) in the compact hot core of the LMH at the levels reported, so we
conclude that it is unlikely that Kuan et al. have detected glycine in either
Sgr B2 or Orion-KL. We find upper limits for propylene oxide abundance of 3.0 x
10^{14} cm^{-2} in Orion-KL and 6.7 x 10^{14} cm^{-2} in Sgr B2 (LMH). We have
detected fourteen features in Sgr B2 and four features in Orion-KL which have
not previously been reported in the ISM, but have not be able to plausibly

Collisionless hydrodynamics for 1D motion of inhomogeneous degenerate electron gases: equivalence of two recent descriptions
Recently I. Tokatly and O. Pankratov (''TP'', Phys. Rev. B 60, 15550 (1999))
used velocity moments of a semiclassical kinetic equation to derive a
hydrodynamic description of electron motion in a degenerate electron gas.
Independently, the present authors (Theochem 501-502, 327 (2000)) used
considerations arising from the Harmonic Potential Theorem (Phys. Rev. Lett.
73, 2244 (1994)) to generate a new form of high-frequency hydrodynamics for
inhomogeneous degenerate electron gases (HPT-N3 hydrodynamics). We show here
that TP hydrodynamics yields HPT-N3 hydrodynamics when linearized about a
Thomas-Fermi groundstate with one-dimensional spatial inhomnogeneity.Comment: 17p
