    The Relationship between the Ownership Structure and the Role of the Board

    This paper develops a theoretical model to better understand how the priorities of the board of directors are influenced by the ownership structure and how that affects firm performance. Most corporate governance research focuses on a universal link between corporate governance practices (e.g., board structure, shareholder activism) and performance outcomes, but neglects how the specific context of each company and diverse environments lead to variations in the effectiveness of different governance practices. This study suggests that the ownership structure has an important influence on the priorities set by the board, and that these priorities will determine the optimal composition of the board of directors. In contrast to a board prioritizing monitoring, where directors with financial experience and a duality are important, a board prioritizing the provision of resources could benefit from directors with different characteristics, the presence of the CEO on the board of directors and a larger board size. Understanding the influence of the board of directors on firm performance requires greater sensitivity to how corporate governance affects different aspects of effectiveness for different stakeholders and in different contexts. The insights on the interaction between the ownership structure and board composition can shed new light onto the contradictory empirical results of past research that has tried to link board composition or structure to firm performance directly. In an effort to increase the relevance of future research on boards and firm performance, we provide a framework on the interaction between ownership, corporate boards and firm performance. In light of scandals and perceived advantages in reforming governance systems, debates have emerged over the appropriateness of implementing corporate governance recommendations mainly based on an Anglo-Saxon context characterized by dispersed ownership where markets for corporate control, legal regulation, and contractual incentives are key governance mechanisms. This paper adds to the literature that argues in favor of the need to adapt corporate governance policies to the local contexts of firms.

    Is conflict adaptation triggered by feature repetitions? An unexpected finding

    For decades, cognitive adaptation to response conflict has been considered to be the hallmark of cognitive control. Notwithstanding a vast amount of evidence ruling out low-level interpretations of these findings, disbelief still exists with regard to the underlying cause of the observed effects. Especially when considering cognitive adaptation to unconscious conflict, it is still a matter of debate whether repetitions of features between trials might explain this intriguing finding rather than the involvement of unconscious control. To this purpose, we conducted two masked priming experiments in which four different responses to four different stimuli were required. This allowed us to completely eliminate repetitions of prime and target over consecutive trials. Independent of whether conflicting information was presented clearly visible or almost imperceptible, the results showed an unexpected pattern. Contrary to the regular congruency sequence effect (CSE; i.e., classic Gratton effect), in both experiments the congruency effect increased following incongruent trials. Interestingly, this reversed effect completely disappeared when we eliminated all trials with feature repetitions from the analysis. A third experiment, in which feature repetitions were excluded a priori, showed a small but regular CSE in the error rates only. Given that feature repetitions are theoretically thought to create a regular CSE, our results are not in line with an interpretation in terms of feature repetitions nor with an interpretation in terms of cognitive control. We conclude that examining cognitive adaptation with or without feature repetitions might be more difficult to conceive than is often suggested in the literature

    Abdominal decompression for abdominal compartment syndrome in critically ill patients: a retrospective study

    Background. The abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) refers to organ dysfunction that may occur as a result of increased intra-abdominal pressure (IAP). Successful management may require abdominal decompression and temporary abdominal closure (TAC). The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of patients requiring abdominal decompression, to describe the methods used for TAC, and to study the outcome of these patients. Methods. A series of critically ill patients who required abdominal decompression for ACS between January 2000 and March 2007 were reviewed retrospectively. Age, gender, severity of organ dysfunction before decompression and the cause of ACS as well as the type of abdominal closure system and length of ICU-stay were recorded. Definitive abdominal closure and in-hospital mortality were the main outcome parameters. Results. Eighteen patients with primary ACS and 6 with secondary ACS required decompressive laparotomy. Patients ages ranged from 18 to 89 years (mean 50.7). The median preoperative IAP was 26mmHg, and IAP decreased to 13mmHg after decompressive laparotomy. Organ function, as quantified by the SOFA scoring system, improved significantly after the intervention. Eight patients had immediate primary fascial closure after the decompressive procedure and 16 patients required TAC. The majority of the survivors underwent planned ventral hernia repair at a later stage. The mean length of stay in the ICU was 23 (+/- 16) days. Overall, fifteen patients survived (63%). Conclusions. Decompressive laparotomy was effective in reducing IAP and was associated with an improvement in organ function. In most of the patients, the abdomen could not be closed after decompression, and fascial repair was delayed

    Virtual reality simulation for the optimization of endovascular procedures : current perspectives

    Endovascular technologies are rapidly evolving, often - requiring coordination and cooperation between clinicians and technicians from diverse specialties. These multidisciplinary interactions lead to challenges that are reflected in the high rate of errors occurring during endovascular procedures. Endovascular virtual reality (VR) simulation has evolved from simple benchtop devices to full physic simulators with advanced haptics and dynamic imaging and physiological controls. The latest developments in this field include the use of fully immersive simulated hybrid angiosuites to train whole endovascular teams in crisis resource management and novel technologies that enable practitioners to build VR simulations based on patient-specific anatomy. As our understanding of the skills, both technical and nontechnical, required for optimal endovascular performance improves, the requisite tools for objective assessment of these skills are being developed and will further enable the use of VR simulation in the training and assessment of endovascular interventionalists and their entire teams. Simulation training that allows deliberate practice without danger to patients may be key to bridging the gap between new endovascular technology and improved patient outcomes
