Trade-off analysis and design of a Hydraulic Energy Scavenger

In the last years there has been a growing interest in intelligent, autonomous devices for household applications. In the near future this technology will be part of our society; sensing and actuating will be integrated in the environment of our houses by means of energy scavengers and wireless microsystems. These systems will be capable of monitoring the environment, communicating with people and among each other, actuating and supplying themselves independently. This concept is now possible thanks to the low power consumption of electronic devices and accurate design of energy scavengers to harvest energy from the surrounding environment. In principle, an autonomous device comprises three main subsystems: an energy scavenger, an energy storage unit and an operational stage. The energy scavenger is capable of harvesting very small amounts of energy from the surroundings and converting it into electrical energy. This energy can be stored in a small storage unit like a small battery or capacitor, thus being available as a power supply. The operational stage can perform a variety of tasks depending on the application. Inside its application range, this kind of system presents several advantages with respect to regular devices using external energy supplies. They can be simpler to apply as no external connections are needed; they are environmentally friendly and might be economically advantageous in the long term. Furthermore, their autonomous nature permits the application in locations where the local energy grid is not present and allows them to be ‘hidden' in the environment, being independent from interaction with humans. In the present paper an energy-harvesting system used to supply a hydraulic control valve of a heating system for a typical residential application is studied. The system converts the kinetic energy from the water flow inside the pipes of the heating system to power the energy scavenger. The harvesting unit is composed of a hydraulic turbine that converts the kinetic energy of the water flow into rotational motion to drive a small electric generator. The design phases comprise a trade-off analysis to define the most suitable hydraulic turbine and electric generator for the energy scavenger, and an optimization of the components to satisfy the systems specification

Non-dimensional design approach for electrodynamic bearings

Electrodynamic bearings (EDBs) are passive magnetic bearings that exploit the interaction between eddy currents developed in a rotating conductor and a static magnetic field to generate forces. Similar to other types of magnetic suspensions, EDBs provide contactless support, thus avoiding problems with lubrication, friction and wear. The most interesting aspect of EDBs is that levitation can be obtained by passive means, hence, no electronic equipment, such as power electronics or sensors, are necessary. Despite their promising characteristics, rotors running on EDBs are still lacking a design procedure; furthermore, at present the static behavior of a bearing can only be defined by means of finite element analyses. The aim of the present paper is to present a methodology that allows performing a first approximation design without resorting to detailed FE analyses. The methodology is based on the use of non-dimensional parameters, similar to the analysis of fluid bearings (Sommerfeld number). The non-dimensional quantities are derived using dimensional analysis, and contain the main geometrical and physical parameters determining the EDBs' performance. The relation between the non-dimensional quantities characterizing the static performance of the EDB is derived using FE simulations and is presented in the form of graph

PRINCIPAIS ATRIBUIÇÕES DOS TUTORES NA EaD

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo abordar a importância do tutor na educação a distância ressaltando as funções que ele exerce nessa modalidade. Para isso foram desenvolvidas pesquisas teóricas, seguindo como metodologia a pesquisa bibliográfica. Como objetivos específicos o trabalho pretendeu descrever um breve histórico da EaD, especificar os tipos de mídias educativas e de comunicação utilizados pelo tutor na interação com o cursista e diferenciar os perfis de tutor. O tutor surge na medida em que na modalidade EaD há um rompimento da relação entre alunos e professores presencialmente. Sua função é a de ser um mediador entre o professor, os conteúdos e os alunos. Conclui-se que o papel do tutor é fundamental na EaD pois é ele quem acompanha e avalia a aprendizagem dos alunos durante todo o processo

Activity schedule and foraging in Protopolybia sedula (Hymenoptera, Vespidae)

Protopolybia sedula is a social swarming wasp, widely spread throughout many countries in the Americas, including most of Brazil. Despite its distribution, studies of its behavioral ecology are scarce. This study aimed to describe its foraging activity and relation to climatic variables in the city of Juiz de Fora in southeastern Brazil. Three colonies were under observation between 07:00 and 18:00 during April 2012, January 2013, and March 2013. Every 30 minutes, the number of foragers leaving and returning to the colony was registered along with air temperature and relative humidity. Activity began around 07:30¸ increased between 10:30 and 14:30, and ended around 18:30. A mean of 52.7 exits and 54 returns were measured every 30 minutes. The daily mean values were 1,107 ± 510.6 exits and 1,135 ± 854.8 returns. Only one colony showed a significant correlation between forager exits and temperature (rs = 0.8055; P \u3c 0.0001) and between exits and relative humidity (rs = -0.7441; P = 0.0001). PROPOSTA DE UM FRAMEWORK PARA AVALIAÇÃO EM EaD

A educação e a educação à distância precisam de estratégias para avaliação dos participantes do processo. Seguindo essa lógica, o estudo pretende apresentar uma proposta de um framework aplicável para a educação à distância. De cunho exploratório, foi feita uma revisão crítica do que é a avaliação e como ela vem sendo usada na educação à distância, seguindo com um estudo teórico a respeito das estratégias de avaliação nesse ambiente. Sem ser conclusivo, o estudo apresentou breves conceitos de EaD, esboçou um panorama dessa modalidade no Brasil e discutiu os tipos de avaliação aplicáveis na educação mediada pela tecnologia da informação. Destaca-se do apanhado teórico que a avaliação formativa deve ser o foco das propostas relacionadas com avaliação em educação à distância. Também, que o processo participativo envolvendo professor, aluno e a instituição, se apresenta como um ponto de partida para a discussão dessa proposta

O PERFIL PROFISSIONAL DOS ESTUDANTES DE CURSOS SUPERIORES EM TECNOLOGIA DE UMA INSTITUIÇÃO DE ENSINO SUPERIOR NO MUNICÍPIO DE CASCAVEL QUE ESTÃO NO MERCADO DE TRABALHO

Os cursos superiores em tecnologia estão mais voltados para a realidade do trabalho atual. Este trabalho teve como objetivo investigar o perfil profissional dos estudantes de cursos superiores em tecnologia que estão no mercado de trabalho, as razões que levaram a escolher o curso, suas expectativas após sua conclusão e se o acadêmico está estagiando ou trabalhando na área escolhida. O trabalho foi fundamentado por meio de pesquisa bibliográfica e o método quantitativo, com a aplicação de questionário, numa amostra de cento e setenta e nove acadêmicos dos primeiros anos dos cursos de gestão comercial, gestão financeira e processos gerenciais, na Faculdade de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas de Cascavel – UNIVEL. Através dos resultados analisados pode-se observar que o acadêmico do curso de gestão financeira, comercial e processos gerenciais é um estudante jovem, que buscou o curso devido ao mercado de trabalho e a influência das tendências, espera obter melhores salários após a sua formação e pretende continuar seus estudos em uma pós-graduação, lato sensu ou stricto sensu. Conclui-se que a educação tecnológica trouxe uma contribuição para o desenvolvimento do mercado de trabalho brasileiro, que vive em constantes mudanças e necessita de profissionais qualificados, aptos para encarar este novo e promissor cenário

O para-formal no centro da cidade: o caso de Salvador, Bahia, Brasil

O texto foi escrito a partir da investigação dedicada a mapear a “para-formalidade” no centro da cidade de Salvador/Bahia/Brasil, através de cartografias urbanas, fazendo uso de recursos infográficos e sendo divulgado em tempo real por meio de website. A oficina foi realizada no "Corpocidade 3", e dividiu-se em errâncias e intervenções. A pesquisa se volta para os espaços não regulados, onde se produzem atividades que tendem a subverter as leis da economia tradicional, do urbanismo e das relações humanas, gerando mudanças importantes, tanto teóricas como práticas, na maneira de pensar e planejar a cidade. Para essa pesquisa, o para-formal são todas as atividades (comerciais, culturais, moradia, etc.) encontradas no espaço público da cidade, que não faz parte de seu desenho urbano (original), mas que “agora” – na contemporaneidade – fazem parte de seu cotidiano. Até agora, os principais resultados obtidos giram em torno do corpo, do espaço e do tempo no centro das cidades.The text was written from research devoted to map the "para-formalidade" in the center of Salvador/Bahia/Brazil, through urban cartography, making use of infographics and being released in real time via the website. The workshop was held in "Corpocidade 3", and divided into walkers and interventions. The research turns to the unregulated spaces where activities occur that tend to subvert the traditional laws of economics, urban planning and human relations, generating important changes, both theoretical and practical, in thinking and planning the city. For this research, the "para-formal" are all activities (commercial, cultural, housing, etc.) found in the public space of the city, which is not part of its urban design (original), but that "now" - nowadays - do part of their daily lives.
