The Synergy of Synthesis, Computation and NMR Spectroscopy to Design Conformationally Controlled α-Helix Mimetics
An exploratory study into the factors which influence nursing staff's attributions, beliefs and behaviour towards individuals who self-harm
Previous research into self-harm suggests that nurses frequently hold negative views about individuals who self-harm. In addition there is little consensus in the literature on definitions and causes of self-harm, or the impact of nurses' beliefs on their care giving to this group. This study aimed to explore nurses' attributions, beliefs and behaviour towards self-harm and to identify the impact of this work on nurses.Q Sort methodology was used in this study to investigate the attitudes and self reported behaviour of a group of nurses towards people who self-harm. Participants also completed a standardised measure of burnout.Factor analysis of Q sort responses resulted in eight factors reflecting mainly positive attitudes but some struggling to understand the individual who self-harms. Analysis yielded no differences between short and longer term working but nurses' personal accomplishment increased from training which discussed self-harm. Implications for theory, clinical practice and service delivery are discussed
Trilostane in dogs
Over the last 10 years, trilostane, a competitive inhibitor of steroid synthesis, is being widely used for the treatment of canine hyperadrenocorticism. Trilostane causes a significant but reversible decrease in cortisol production and a concomitant improvement in clinical signs in most dogs with this common condition. Side effects, though infrequent, can be serious: dogs treated with this drug require regular monitoring. This review summarizes current knowledge of the use of this drug with particular emphasis on its efficacy, safety, adverse reactions, and effects on endocrine parameters. Brief mention is made of its other uses in dogs and other species
Collaborative research exploring mental health service user perspectives on acute inpatient occupational therapy
Introduction:User perspectives are important for understanding why people engage with occupational therapy during an admission for acute mental health issues, and can be used to inform service provision and development. Method: Twenty-two recent and current inpatients participated in six semi-structured individual interviews and three focus groups. Data from the two methods were initially subject to separate thematic analysis. Then a further stage of constant comparative analysis, of both data sets, generated the findings presented here. Findings: Three themes were identified: (1) ‘A tiny sort of world’ expressed experiences of being restricted; (2) ‘Relief’ indicated how occupational therapy offered relief from the ward and experiences of mental ill-health; and (3) ‘Something to do’ suggested specific purposes for engaging in occupation. These themes indicate how service users experience and value occupational therapy for different reasons at different times. The approach of occupational therapists to service users, valuing them as occupational beings, is a key aspect of their experience. Conclusion: The profession is challenged to design flexible opportunities for occupational engagement which simultaneously provide relief and distraction, address diverse occupational needs, and are feasible within the resource restrictions of acute mental health services
