    Some notes on the anterior dorsal fin and venous drainage in Callorhinchus (Holocephali)

    The region of the anterior dorsal fin of the elephant-fish (CalZorhinchus callorhynchus (L.) has been examined by dissection, by injection of radio-opaque material and in serial sections. Particular attention has been paid to the venous system in the region. A large venous sinus lies below the basal plate of the fin skeleton and has connections running anteriorly and posteriorly in the midline. Anteriorly, the sinus is connected with the left posterior cardinal vein by a large communicating vein which lies close against the left side of the vertebral column. This arrangement is generally similar to that found in the Selachii, but in the latter group two venae circulares are found instead of the median dorsal sinus of Callorhinchus and other Holocephali

    Inadvertent trypan blue staining of posterior capsule during cataract surgery associated with Argentinian flag event

    Trypan blue is common in visualizing the anterior capsule during cataract surgery. Inadvertent staining of the posterior capsule during phacoemulsification is a rare complication and there are few reports in the literature. The proposed mechanism of posterior capsule staining in previous reports includes a compromised zonular apparatus or iris retractors facilitating the posterior flow of trypan blue. We report the first case of trypan blue staining of the posterior capsule associated with the “Argentinian flag” sign. In our case, the “Argentinian flag” allowed the trypan blue to seep between the posterior capsule and the lens, staining the anterior surface of the posterior capsule

    The cells that secrete the beaks in octopods and squids (Mollusca, Cephalopoda)

    A single layer of cells secretes the hard cephalopod beaks. The beccublasts are tall columnar cells that separate the beak from the surrounding buccal muscles, and must serve to attach these muscles to the beak. Within the cell layer there are three types of cells. The first, and most frequently found contain cell-long fibrils. These fibrils may have contractile and tensile properties. Complex trabeculae extend from the beccublasts into the matrix of the beak. The fibrils are attached to these trabeculae and at the other end of the cells they are anchored near to the beccublast-muscle cell interface, closely associated with the muscles that move the beak. The second group of cells contain masses of endoplasmic reticulum the cysternae of which are arranged along the long axis of the cell. These cells also contain dense granules and are probably the major source of beak hard tissue. It is probable that each cell secretes its own column of beak hard tissue. The third group of cells contains a mixture of fibrils and secretory tissue. In the beccublast layer there are changes in the proportion of the three types of cells depending upon the region sampled. In the region where growth is most active there are mostly secretory cells, whereas near the biting and wearing tip there are mainly anchoring type cells

    Submitting to MedEdPORTAL: Do it right the first time

    Presented as a Small Group/Roundtable Discussion at 2020 IUSM Education Day.Medical educators at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) are encouraged to publish in MedEdPORTAL: The Journal of Teaching and Learning Resources. Published by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), MedEdPORTAL is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal for medical education scholarship. These publications contain complete curricula, including objectives, instructor guides, slides, and assessments, ready to be implemented in the classroom. When faculty members apply for promotion, MedEdPORTAL can demonstrate the quality of their work through peer-review, citation counts, and other usage reports. Despite submitting high quality learning modules, medical educators receive rejections from the MedEdPORTAL 62% of time. Reasons for rejection include insufficient educational context and assessment, mismatch of educational objectives and instructional content, and failure to build on existing curricula. Of immediately rejected submissions, 90% also have copyright issues. MedEdPORTAL is a member of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) and therefore has strict requirements for copyright and licensing images in the education materials. These requirements are difficult to navigate. For faculty who are not familiar with copyright and licensing, these barriers can be frustrating enough to deter them from submitting curricula. This workshop introduced MedEdPORTAL, described the submission process, and shared our strategies for putting together a successful submission. By the end of the workshop, participants were able to: • Identify curricula they have developed that would fit with the goals of MedEdPORTAL’s publishers • Use template to complete the Educational Summary Report (ESR) • Classify content as that which requires copyright permission, is in the public domain, or has a Creative Commons license • Navigate the process of manuscript submission and revisio

    Eeffect of Solvent Fungi, Application Period and Phosphate Fertilizer in Increasing Absorption and Availlablity P of Potato in Eruption Impact of Andisol

    Andisol consist of total P in a huge amount however it is in unavailable form for plant to uptake. One of the treatment to increase phosphate available on soil by using fungi. The objective of research was to determine the effect from penicillium inoculum, the time of inoculum application and SP-36 fertilizer dosage in the growth of potato and soil P availability. The experiment design used was randomized block design with three factors and three replications. The first factor was the penicillium inoculum with three stages (10, 20 and 30 mL), the second factor was the application period with two stages (1 and 2 week after plant growth) and the third factor was SP-36 fertilizer dosage with three dosages (50, 75 and 100%) from dosage used by local farmer. The parameters were microorganism population, pH, total P, P available, shoot dry weight and P uptake by plant. The result showed that penicillium inoculum was able to increase total P, P available and shoot dry weight of potato. The interaction between 30 mL of penicillium inoculum, time of application inoculum at 2 week after plant growth and 50% dosage of phosphate produce the highest potatoes shoot dry weight

    Rewarding educators and education leaders in research-intensive universities

    The reward and recognition of staff focused on learning and teaching is an issue that affects all types of higher education institutions. Research-intensive institutions, for example, have always been conscious of the balance between research and teaching, particularly in relation to funding streams and the REF, but have ensured that their students receive the excellent teaching that they deserve. One indication of this is the increasing number of HEA Fellows at such institutions. At a time of growing emphasis on the importance of high quality student education, the HEA’s research into career structures and prospects - which includes Rebalancing promotion in the HE sector: Is teaching excellence being rewarded by Annette Cashmore et al, and Shifting landscapes: Meeting the staff development needs of the changing academic workforce by William Locke et al – can help to inform policy and practice. The HEA will continue to commission high quality research - from across the sector - to address key issues in this area. The research offered below by Dilly Fung et al focuses solely on the Russell Group – which it is acknowledged comprises only a small section of the UK’s research-intensive institutions - and examines the challenges at those particular institutions. It is hoped that some of the findings, analysis and recommendations might be applicable more broadly, however, in the UK and elsewhere
