Fluctuation-Dissipation Relations and statistical temperatures in a turbulent von K\'arm\'an flow
We experimentally characterize the fluctuations of the non-homogeneous
non-isotropic turbulence in an axisymmetric von K\'arm\'an flow. We show that
these fluctuations satisfy relations analogous to classical
Fluctuation-Dissipation Relations (FDRs) in statistical mechanics. We use these
relations to measure statistical temperatures of turbulence. The values of
these temperatures are found to be dependent on the considered observable as

Vorticity scattering measurements in a superfluid inertial round jet
International audienceThe aim of this proceeding paper is twofold. First, we present a newly developed cryogenic testing facility where a steady high Reynolds liquid helium inertial round jet flow is generated allowing to address classical turbulence issues, such as statistical intermittency, and quantum turbulence when the facility is operating in superfluid helium. Secondly we present the first spatial Fourier vorticity modes measurements made both above and below the superfluid transition at different nozzle velocities. These preliminary results were obtained by probing the vorticity flow-field with the ultrasonic scattering technique
Probing quantum and classical turbulence analogy through global bifurcations in a von K\'arm\'an liquid Helium experiment
We report measurements of the dissipation in the Superfluid Helium high
REynold number von Karman flow (SHREK) experiment for different forcing
conditions, through a regime of global hysteretic bifurcation. Our
macroscopical measurements indicate no noticeable difference between the
classical fluid and the superfluid regimes, thereby providing evidence of the
same dissipative anomaly and response to asymmetry in fluid and superfluid
regime. %In the latter case, A detailed study of the variations of the
hysteretic cycle with Reynolds number supports the idea that (i) the stability
of the bifurcated states of classical turbulence in this closed flow is partly
governed by the dissipative scales and (ii) the normal and the superfluid
component at these temperatures (1.6K) are locked down to the dissipative

Vortex density spectrum of quantum turbulence
The fluctuations of the vortex density in a turbulent quantum fluid are
deduced from local second-sound attenuation measurements. These measurements
are performed with a micromachined open-cavity resonator inserted across a flow
of turbulent He-II near 1.6 K. The power spectrum of the measured vortex line
density is compatible with a (-5/3) power law. The physical interpretation,

A missense variant in the coil1A domain of the keratin 25 gene is associated with the dominant curly hair coat trait (Crd) in horse
Curly horses present a variety of curl phenotypes that are associated with various degrees of curliness of coat, mane, tail and ear hairs. Their origin is still a matter of debate and several genetic hypotheses have been formulated to explain the diversity in phenotype, including the combination of autosomal dominant and recessive alleles. Our purpose was to map the autosomal dominant curly hair locus and identify the causal variant using genome-wide association study (GWAS) and whole-genome sequencing approaches. A GWAS was performed using a Bayesian sparse linear mixed model, based on 51 curly and 19 straighthaired French and North American horses from 13 paternal families genotyped on the Illumina EquineSNP50 Bead-Chip. A single strong signal was observed on equine chromosome 11, in a region that encompasses the type I keratin gene cluster. This region was refined by haplotype analysis to a segment including 36 genes, among which are 10 keratin genes (KRT-10, -12, -20, -23, -24, -25, -26, -27, -28, -222). To comprehensively identify candidate causal variants within all these genes, whole-genome sequences were obtained for one heterozygous curly stallion and its straighthaired son. Among the four non-synonymous candidate variants identified and validated in the curly region, only variant g. 21891160G> A in the KRT25 gene (KRT25:p.R89H) was in perfect agreement with haplotype status in the whole pedigree. Genetic association was then confirmed by genotyping a larger population consisting of 353 horses. However, five discordant curly horses were observed, which carried neither the variant nor the main haplotype associated with curliness. Sequencing of KRT25 for two discordant horses did not identify any other deleterious variant, which suggests locus rather than allelic heterogeneity for the curly phenotype. We identified the KRT25: p. R89H variant as responsible for the dominant curly trait, but a second dominant locus may also be involved in the shape of hairs within North American Curly horses
Statistical mechanics of Beltrami flows in axisymmetric geometry: Equilibria and bifurcations
We characterize the thermodynamical equilibrium states of axisymmetric
Euler-Beltrami flows. They have the form of coherent structures presenting one
or several cells. We find the relevant control parameters and derive the
corresponding equations of state. We prove the coexistence of several
equilibrium states for a given value of the control parameter like in 2D
turbulence [Chavanis and Sommeria, J. Fluid Mech. 314, 267 (1996)]. We explore
the stability of these equilibrium states and show that all states are saddle
points of entropy and can, in principle, be destabilized by a perturbation with
a larger wavenumber, resulting in a structure at the smallest available scale.
This mechanism is therefore reminiscent of the 3D Richardson energy cascade
towards smaller and smaller scales. Therefore, our system is truly intermediate
between 2D turbulence (coherent structures) and 3D turbulence (energy cascade).
We further explore numerically the robustness of the equilibrium states with
respect to random perturbations using a relaxation algorithm in both canonical
and microcanonical ensembles. We show that saddle points of entropy can be very
robust and therefore play a role in the dynamics. We evidence differences in
the robustness of the solutions in the canonical and microcanonical ensembles.
A scenario of bifurcation between two different equilibria (with one or two
cells) is proposed and discussed in connection with a recent observation of a
turbulent bifurcation in a von Karman experiment [Ravelet et al., Phys. Rev.

RNA elements directing in vivo assembly of the 7SK/MePCE/Larp7 transcriptional regulatory snRNP
Through controlling the nuclear level of active positive transcription elongation factor b (P-TEFb), the 7SK small nuclear RNA (snRNA) functions as a key regulator of RNA polymerase II transcription. Together with hexamethylene bisacetamide-inducible proteins 1/2 (HEXIM1/2), the 7SK snRNA sequesters P-TEFb into transcriptionally inactive ribonucleoprotein (RNP). In response to transcriptional stimulation, the 7SK/HEXIM/P-TEFb RNP releases P-TEFb to promote polymerase II-mediated messenger RNA synthesis. Besides transiently associating with HEXIM1/2 and P-TEFb, the 7SK snRNA stably interacts with the La-related protein 7 (Larp7) and the methylphosphate capping enzyme (MePCE). In this study, we used in vivo RNA-protein interaction assays to determine the sequence and structural elements of human 7SK snRNA directing assembly of the 7SK/MePCE/Larp7 core snRNP. MePCE interacts with the short 5'-terminal G1-U4/U106-G111 helix-tail motif and Larp7 binds to the 3'-terminal hairpin and the following U-rich tail of 7SK. The overall RNA structure and some particular nucleotides provide the information for specific binding of MePCE and Larp7. We also demonstrate that binding of Larp7 to 7SK is a prerequisite for in vivo recruitment of P-TEFb, indicating that besides providing stability for 7SK, Larp7 directly participates in P-TEFb regulation. Our results provide further explanation for the frequently observed link between Larp7 mutations and cancer development
Turbulent velocity spectra in superfluid flows
International audienceWe present velocity spectra measured in three cryogenic liquid 4He steady flows: grid and wake flows in a pressurized wind tunnel capable of achieving mean velocities up to 5 m/s at temperatures above and below the superfluid transition, down to 1.7 K, and a "chunk" turbulence flow at 1.55 K, capable of sustaining mean superfluid velocities up to 1.3 m/s. Depending on the flows, the stagnation pressure probes used for anemometry are resolving from one to two decades of the inertial regime of the turbulent cascade. We do not find any evidence that the second order statistics of turbulence below the superfluid transition differ from the ones of classical turbulence, above the transition
