A school text book analysis
This paper reports on a project to digitise and analyse sample reading books recently used within British Primary schools. Through analysis of the textual content of example texts from this corpus, we aimed to illustrate statistical characteristics of these texts and consider implications for the expected rate of progression across texts intended for different school levels. Our project also includes the design and implementation of software tools for assisting with this undertaking. Our approach to textual analysis relies heavily on frequency lists for each of the school text books and their comparison with frequency lists of common usage (words per million) derived from the British National Corpus. Our software toolset eases the task of contrastive analysis as well as providing helpful graphical display of analysis data
Taking the C out of CVMFS
The Cern Virtual Machine File System is most well known as a distribution mechanism for the WLCG VOs@@ experiment software; as a result, almost all the existing expertise is in installing clients mount the central Cern repositories. We report the results of an initial experiment in using the cvmfs server packages to provide Glasgow-based repository aimed at software provisioning for small UK-local VOs. In general, although the documentation is sparse, server configuration is reasonably easy, with some experimentation. We discuss the advantages of local CVMFS repositories for sites, with some examples from our test VOs, vo.optics.ac.uk and neiss.org.uk
Preparations for Variable-Gravity Regolith Penetration with an Ultrasonically-Active Probe
The set of experiments proposed in this paper intend to investigate the properties of ultrasonic penetration through granular materials in hypergravity. As part of ESA's 6 th 'Spin Your Thesis' campaign, the University of Glasgow will be allowed to use the Large Diameter Centrifuge at the ESTEC facilities in Noordwijk, Netherlands, to achieve these hypergravity conditions. This paper describes the progress of the design and manufacture of the experimental apparatus, analysis of structural integrity to insure the rig can be subjected to the rigors of hypergravity, and discussion of the anticipated results and implications
Influence of convective transport on tropospheric ozone and its precursors in a chemistry-climate model
The impact of convection on tropospheric O3 and its precursors has been examined in a coupled chemistry-climate model. There are two ways that convection affects O3. First, convection affects O3 by vertical mixing of O3 itself. Convection lifts lower tropospheric air to regions where the O3 lifetime is longer, whilst mass-balance subsidence mixes O3-rich upper tropospheric (UT) air downwards to regions where the O3 lifetime is shorter. This tends to decrease UT O3 and the overall tropospheric column of O3. Secondly, convection affects O3 by vertical mixing of O3 precursors. This affects O3 chemical production and destruction. Convection transports isoprene and its degradation products to the UT where they interact with lightning NOx to produce PAN, at the expense of NOx. In our model, we find that convection reduces UT NOx through this mechanism; convective down-mixing also flattens our imposed profile of lightning emissions, further reducing UT NOx. Over tropical land, which has large lightning NOx emissions in the UT, we find convective lofting of NOx from surface sources appears relatively unimportant. Despite UT NOx decreases, UT O3 production increases as a result of UT HOx increases driven by isoprene oxidation chemistry. However, UT O3 tends to decrease, as the effect of convective overturning of O3 itself dominates over changes in O3 chemistry. Convective transport also reduces UT O3 in the mid-latitudes resulting in a 13% decrease in the global tropospheric O3 burden. These results contrast with an earlier study that uses a model of similar chemical complexity. Differences in convection schemes as well as chemistry schemes – in particular isoprene-driven changes are the most likely causes of such discrepancies. Further modelling studies are needed to constrain this uncertainty range
Perturbative 2-body Parent Hamiltonians for Projected Entangled Pair States
We construct parent Hamiltonians involving only local 2-body interactions for
a broad class of Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). Making use of
perturbation gadget techniques, we define a perturbative Hamiltonian acting on
the virtual PEPS space with a finite order low energy effective Hamiltonian
that is a gapped, frustration-free parent Hamiltonian for an encoded version of
a desired PEPS. For topologically ordered PEPS, the ground space of the low
energy effective Hamiltonian is shown to be in the same phase as the desired
state to all orders of perturbation theory. An encoded parent Hamiltonian for
the double semion string net ground state is explicitly constructed as a
concrete example.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, v2 published versio
Helping children think: Gaze aversion and teaching
Looking away from an interlocutor's face during demanding cognitive activity can help adults answer challenging arithmetic and verbal-reasoning questions (Glenberg, Schroeder, & Robertson, 1998). However, such `gaze aversion' (GA) is poorly applied by 5-year-old school children (Doherty-Sneddon, Bruce, Bonner, Longbotham, & Doyle, 2002). In Experiment 1 we trained ten 5-year-old children to use GA while thinking about answers to questions. This trained group performed significantly better on challenging questions compared with 10 controls given no GA training. In Experiment 2 we found significant and monotonic age-related increments in spontaneous use of GA across three cohorts of ten 5-year-old school children (mean ages: 5;02, 5;06 and 5;08). Teaching and encouraging GA during challenging cognitive activity promises to be invaluable in promoting learning, particularly during early primary years
Distribution and incidence of viruses in Irish seed potato crops
peer-reviewedVirus diseases are of key importance in potato production and in particular for the production of disease-free potato seed. However, there is little known about the frequency and distribution of potato virus diseases in Ireland. Despite a large number of samples being tested each year, the data has never been collated either within or across years. Information from all known potato virus testing carried out in the years 2006–2012 by the Department of Agriculture Food and Marine was collated to give an indication of the distribution and incidence of potato virus in Ireland. It was found that there was significant variation between regions, varieties, years and seed classes. A definition of daily weather data suitable for aphid flight was developed, which accounted for a significant proportion of the variation in virus incidence between years. This use of weather data to predict virus risk could be developed to form the basis of an integrated pest management approach for aphid control in Irish potato crops
Decomposition of any quantum measurement into extremals
We design an efficient and constructive algorithm to decompose any
generalized quantum measurement into a convex combination of extremal
measurements. We show that if one allows for a classical post-processing step
only extremal rank-1 POVMs are needed. For a measurement with elements on a
-dimensional space, our algorithm will decompose it into at most
extremals, whereas the best previously known upper bound scaled as . Since
the decomposition is not unique, we show how to tailor our algorithm to provide
particular types of decompositions that exhibit some desired property.Comment: 10 page
