Ubiquitous finite-size scaling features in IV characteristics of various dynamic XY models in two dimensions

Two-dimensional (2D) XY model subject to three different types of dynamics, namely Monte Carlo, resistivity shunted junction (RSJ), and relaxational dynamics, is numerically simulated. From the comparisons of the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics, it is found that up to some constants I-V curves at a given temperature are identical to each other in a broad range of external currents. Simulations of the Villain model and the modified 2D XY model allowing stronger thermal vortex fluctuations are also performed with RSJ type of dynamics. The finite-size scaling suggested in Medvedyeva et al. [Phys. Rev. B 62, 14531(2000)] is confirmed for all dynamic models used, implying that this finite-size scaling behaviors in the vicinity of the Kosterlitz-Thouless transition are quite robust.Comment: 7 pages, 4 pictures, accepted in Physica

Interface depinning versus absorbing-state phase transitions

    Get PDF
According to recent numerical results from lattice models, the critical exponents of systems with many absorbing states and an order parameter coupled to a non-diffusive conserved field coincide with those of the linear interface depinning model within computational accuracy. In this paper the connection between absorbing state phase transitions and interface pinning in quenched disordered media is investigated. For that, we present a mapping of the interface dynamics in a disordered medium into a Langevin equation for the active-site density and show that a Reggeon-field-theory like description, coupled to an additional non-diffusive conserved field, appears rather naturally. Reciprocally, we construct a mapping from a discrete model belonging in the absorbing state with-a-conserved-field class to a discrete interface equation, and show how a quenched disorder is originated. We discuss the character of the possible noise terms in both representations, and overview the critical exponent relations. Evidence is provided that, at least for dimensions larger that one, both universality classes are just two different representations of the same underlying physics.Comment: 8 page

    Flux noise in high-temperature superconductors

Spontaneously created vortex-antivortex pairs are the predominant source of flux noise in high-temperature superconductors. In principle, flux noise measurements allow to check theoretical predictions for both the distribution of vortex-pair sizes and for the vortex diffusivity. In this paper the flux-noise power spectrum is calculated for the highly anisotropic high-temperature superconductor Bi-2212, both for bulk crystals and for ultra-thin films. The spectrum is basically given by the Fourier transform of the temporal magnetic-field correlation function. We start from a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type theory and incorporate vortex diffusion, intra-pair vortex interaction, and annihilation of pairs by means of a Fokker-Planck equation to determine the noise spectrum below and above the superconducting transition temperature. We find white noise at low frequencies omega and a spectrum proportional to 1/omega^(3/2) at high frequencies. The cross-over frequency between these regimes strongly depends on temperature. The results are compared with earlier results of computer simulations.Comment: 9 pages, 4 PostScript figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.

Lipase production by Fusarium culmorum in solid state fermentation

Fusarium is a large genus of filamentous fungi which cause some of the most important diseases in agricultural and horticultural crops. This fungus is considered to be a useful producer of enzymes from an industrial point of view. In the present study, lipase production by Fusarium culmorum SY6 was investigated under solid-state fermentation (SSF). Among the several agronomic wastes, corn cob hulls and tomato pulp supported the highest yield of lipase (170 and 165 U/g of dry substrate, respectively) after five days of incubation. It was determined that pH 9 and 60°C gave optimumenzyme activity. The F. culmorum SY6 strain grown in SSF in a simple medium proved to be a promising microorganism for lipase production

Automating Spacecraft Analysis: The Era of Ontological Modeling & Simulation

    Get PDF
Verification by analysis is a predicted compliance of a design to imposed requirements. The levels of performance specified by performance requirements can be related to Technical Performance Measures (TPM) in a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environment, but engineers performing verification by analysis are not commonly versed in professional Systems Engineering (SE) techniques or modeling languages such as SysML. As the formal application of Systems Engineering (SE) results in a diminution of time, effort, and money for large-scale projects, enabling technical engineers performing verification by analysis to contribute to MBSE improvements in the course of their daily work is financially incentivized. Ontologies applied to technical analysis methodologies are shown to improve the quality of verification by analysis activities while adhering to professional organization standards such as the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) SE Handbook and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) standard 7009A: Standard for Models and Simulations

In France, school is a right of every child, regardless their migratory status. Every child must be welcomed in a school and it is the responsibility of all administrative and teaching staff to participate in the inclusion of allophone children. Some schools have a specific reception system that will take charge of this new student and provide him/her with instruction with the main objective of mastering French as a language of instruction (FLSco), so that this child can be included in a regular class as soon as possible. Since mastery of the second language (FSL) cannot be achieved in one school year, many allophone children turn to associations for help with their schooling. In associations that provide homework help, volunteers are often asked to accompany students who do not speak French. This can lead to misunderstandings in the relationship between the mentor-child pair, a relationship that must be based on empathy, since it is the adult's responsibility to create the right conditions for the act of learning to be a true manifestation of the child's potential. In this work, we were interested in the role of empathy in the voluntary academic support of allophone students. We measured the degree of empathy of the volunteers in order to understand the extent to which empathy influences the academic success of allophone children. Since success is considered here as the successful completion of a school year, the results are positive. Nevertheless, what emerges from the responses indicates that most of the volunteers would have some degree of difficulty in communicating with the allophone children. For this reason, we decided to propose a training session to the association to sensitize the volunteers to the linguistic issues concerning allophone students and to propose a reflection on an empathetic approach to establish a relationship of trust with the children.
