Conductivity and the current-current correlation measure
We review various formulations of conductivity for one-particle Hamiltonians
and relate them to the current-current correlation measure. We prove that the
current-current correlation measure for random Schr\"odinger operators has a
density at coincident energies provided the energy lies in a localization
regime. The density vanishes at such energies and an upper bound on the rate of
vanishing is computed. We also relate the current-current correlation measure
to the localization length
A method for assessing the success and failure of community-level interventions in the presence of network diffusion, social reinforcement, and related social effects
Prevention and intervention work done within community settings often face
unique analytic challenges for rigorous evaluations. Since community prevention
work (often geographically isolated) cannot be controlled in the same way other
prevention programs and these communities have an increased level of
interpersonal interactions, rigorous evaluations are needed. Even when the
`gold standard' randomized control trials are implemented within community
intervention work, the threats to internal validity can be called into question
given informal social spread of information in closed network settings. A new
prevention evaluation method is presented here to disentangle the social
influences assumed to influence prevention effects within communities. We
formally introduce the method and it's utility for a suicide prevention program
implemented in several Alaska Native villages. The results show promise to
explore eight sociological measures of intervention effects in the face of
social diffusion, social reinforcement, and direct treatment. Policy and

An example of spectral phase transition phenomenon in a class of Jacobi matrices with periodically modulated weights
We consider self-adjoint unbounded Jacobi matrices with diagonal q_n=n and
weights \lambda_n=c_n n, where c_n is a 2-periodical sequence of real numbers.
The parameter space is decomposed into several separate regions, where the
spectrum is either purely absolutely continuous or discrete. This constitutes
an example of the spectral phase transition of the first order. We study the
lines where the spectral phase transition occurs, obtaining the following main
result: either the interval (-\infty;1/2) or the interval (1/2;+\infty) is
covered by the absolutely continuous spectrum, the remainder of the spectrum
being pure point. The proof is based on finding asymptotics of generalized
eigenvectors via the Birkhoff-Adams Theorem. We also consider the degenerate
case, which constitutes yet another example of the spectral phase transition
Botulinum Toxin A for the Treatment of Keloids
Introduction: Keloids are the result of excessive scar tissue formation. Besides their poor aesthetic appearance, keloids can be associated with severe clinical symptoms such as pain, itching, and rigidity. Unfortunately, most therapeutic approaches remain clinically unsatisfactory. Recently, injections with botulinum toxin A (BTA) were proposed for the treatment of established keloids in a clinical trial. In this study, we aimed to verify the effects of intralesional BTA for the treatment of therapy-resistant keloids using objective measurements. In addition, the underlying molecular mechanisms were investigated using cultured keloid-derived fibroblasts. Materials and Methods: Four patients received BTA (doses varying from 70 to 140 Speywood units per session) injected directly into their keloids every 2 months for up to 6 months. Differences in height and volume were evaluated clinically and measured with a 3-D optical profiling system. Keloid-derived fibroblasts were treated with different concentrations of BTA, and expression of collagen (COL)1A1, COL1A2, COL3A1, TGF-beta 1, TGF-beta 2, TGF-beta 3, fibronectin-1, laminin-beta 2, and alpha-SMA was determined by real-time quantitative PCR. MTT and BrdU assays were used to analyze the effects of BTA on fibroblast proliferation and metabolism. Results: Intralesional administration of BTA did not result in regression of keloid tissue. No differences in expression of ECM markers, collagen synthesis, or TGF-beta could be observed after BTA treatment of keloid fibroblasts. In addition, cell proliferation and metabolism of keloid fibroblasts was not affected by BTA treatment. Conclusion: The suggested clinical efficiency of intralesional BTA for the therapy of existent keloids could not be confirmed in this study. Based on our data, the potential mechanisms of action of BTA on keloid-derived fibroblasts remain unclear. Copyright (C) 2012 S. Karger AG, Base

Near-Threshold eta Meson Production in Proton-Proton Collisions
The production of eta mesons has been measured in the proton-proton
interaction close to the reaction threshold using the COSY-11 internal facility
at the cooler synchrotron COSY. Total cross sections were determined for eight
different excess energies in the range from 0.5 MeV to 5.4 MeV. The energy
dependence of the total cross section is well described by the available
phase-space volume weighted by FSI factors for the proton-proton and proton-eta

Observation of nano-indent induced strain fields and dislocation generation in silicon wafers using micro-raman spectroscopy and white beam x-ray topography
In the semiconductor manufacturing industry, wafer handling introduces micro-cracks at the wafer edge. During heat treatment these can produce larger, long-range cracks in the wafer which can cause wafer breakage during manufacture. Two complimentary techniques, micro-Raman spectroscopy (μRS) and White Beam Synchrotron X-ray Topography (WBSXRT) were employed to study both the micro-cracks and the associated strain fields produced by nano-indentations in Si wafers, which were used as a means of introducing controlled strain in the wafers. It is shown that both the spatial lateral and depth distribution of these long range strain fields are relatively isotropic in nature. The Raman spectra suggest the presence of a region under tensile strain beneath the indents, which can indicate a crack beneath the indent and the data strongly suggests that there exists a minimum critical applied load below which cracking will not initiate
