INTRODUCTION: Nurses are in a prime position to manage to support families that have a family member living in a residential home for older people. Nurses' attitudes about meeting patients' family members vary. Studies describe that some nurses consider family members as a burden. But some nurses consider family members a resource and think it is important to establish good relationships with them. AIM: The aim of this study was to describe how registered nurses (RNs) experienced to participate in and conduct the intervention Family Health Conversations (FamHCs) with families in residential homes for older people. METHODS: The intervention FamHC was accomplished at three residential homes for older people. FamHC is a family systems nursing (FSN) intervention developed to support families facing the ill health of someone in the family. One RN from each residential home conducted the conversations. The RNs wrote diary notes directly after each conversation. The RNs were also interviewed 1 month after they had each conducted four FamHCs. The diary notes and the interviews were analysed separately by qualitative content analysis, and the findings were then summarized in one theme and further discussed together. FINDINGS: The main findings were that the RNs experience the conversations as a valuable professional tool involving the whole family. The RNs grasped that silence can be a valuable tool and had learned to attentively listen to what the families were saying without interrupting, allowing them and the families to reflect upon what the family members said. CONCLUSION: The findings show that the FamHC can be helpful for RNs in their work, helping them to perceive and understand the needs and desires of the families

Beyond Disciplinary Drama: Federal Dollars and ESL Instruction for African Americans
This dissertation investigated the curious appearance of English as a second language pedagogy for African American freshmen at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the Fall of 1969 (Scott & Angle, 1970, p. 4). The work explored the researcher’s professional and financial interests in literacy problems that attracted both foundation and National Defense of Education Act funding. Looking beyond disciplinary drama, this dissertation suggested that binaries between marginal researchers and creative ones take away from the complexity of disciplinarity. Oppositions foreclosed on indexing the normative role that sponsors played in our post-World War II and Cold War histories in English instruction
Rotational spectra of t-shaped cyanoacetylene – carbon dioxide complex, HCCCN - CO2
The rotational spectra of T-shaped cyanoacetylene carbon dioxide complex, HCCCN --- CO, were measured using two Balle-Flygare type Fourier transform microwave (FTMW) spectrometers between 1.4 GHz and 22 GHz. The low J transitions were recorded using the low frequency FTMW spectrometer at the University of Arizona with a state-of-the-art resolution of “full width at half maximum” (FWHM) ~1 kHz. The spectra above 4 GHz were recorded at Wesleyan University. Spectral hyperfine structures due to the N nuclear quadrupole coupling interactions can be fully resolved in low frequency bands. Since all K = 1 branches were not observed, this implies that HCCCN --- CO possesses a rigorous T-shaped structure. Assuming that A is the same as that of HCN --- CO, 11824 MHz, the spectroscopic constants of HCCCN --- CO are: B = 794.59686(63) MHz, C = 715.74488(60) MHz, = 0.50067(18) kHz, = 120.892(12) kHz, = 0.04253(31) kHz, = 65.32(12) kHz, H = -0.00117(33) Hz, H = 0.034876(21) kHz, H = -0.68254(73) kHz, (N) = -4.12873(78) MHz, (N) = 2.110(25) MHz, and (N) = 2.019(25) MHz
Data Logging System for a Synthetic Aperture Radar Unit
A small, existing radar unit lacked the ability to automatically store the data it was receiving, which made its use clunky and cumbersome. A system was constructed to allow an on-board microprocessor to track distance traveled, and automatically store the data output from the radar unit to a portable memory unit for later data processing. Distance traveled is determined using a specially designed mobile cart, which electronically converts the rotation of a wheel into an electrical signal while also providing stability for taking accurate radar measurements. The output data from the radar unit is stored as a properly-formatted sound file to allow for immediate data analysis
Exploring reasons for non-vaccination against human papillomavirus in Italy
BACKGROUND: In Italy, free-of-charge HPV vaccination is offered to 11-year-old girls since 2007. The National Immunization Plan established the target coverage at a minimum of 70%; it should increase to 95% within 3-year time frame. In 2012, four year after the introduction of HPV vaccination, coverage was stable at 69%. We conducted a national cross-sectional study to explore barriers to vaccination in Italy. METHODS: Vaccination services selected, through the immunization registries, a sample of unvaccinated girls born in 1997 or 1998 and posted to their families a 23-items questionnaire inquiring barriers to vaccination, HPV knowledge, source of information on HPV, perception of risk of contracting HPV, advice from consulted health professionals on HPV vaccination. RESULTS: We analysed 1,738 questionnaires. Main barriers were fear of adverse events (reported by 80% of families), lack of trust in a new vaccine (76%), discordant information received by health professionals (65%) and scarce information on HPV vaccination (54%). Overall, 54% of families replied correctly to more than half of 10 questions exploring knowledge on HPV vaccination. Families with a high knowledge score were more likely to live in Northern and Central Italy, be Italian, have a high educational level, include a mother who attended cervical screening regularly and consult more information sources. Although paediatricians/general practitioners and gynaecologists were considered the most trusted source of information by 79% and 61% of respondents, they were consulted only by 49% and 31%. Among parents who discussed vaccination with a physician, 28% received discordant advices and 31% received the recommendation of accepting vaccination. CONCLUSIONS: Fear of adverse events, discordance of information and advices from physicians, and scarce information were the more commonly reported barriers to HPV vaccination. Health professionals played a key role as information providers, thus they must be better trained to provide clear notions. Training needs to include the development of communication skills; transparent discussion about the pros and cons of vaccination may reduce fear of adverse events and increase trust in vaccination. The creation of a public health network around vaccination would allow sharing information and attitudes on vaccinations, so that homogeneous messages could reach the target population. Assigning Hanuju: Visualising Rotuman Tattoo
Rotuman cultural tattoo, the fạ’i, was once a thriving artform woven into Rotuman essence. Men and women have had their bodies graced with patterns and motifs that reflected the lifestyle. With missionisation and the heavily influences of Western colonisation, the fạ’i slowly declined from everyday practice. Since Rotumans call the physical world the Rȧn Te’Isi and the spiritual world where the ancestors live the ‘Oroi ta, my hanuju proposes that the fạ’i was a cultural aspect that tethered the Rotumans to their ancestral plane, and therefore is not a lost practice, but one that exists in the ‘Oroi. No Full Tex
