Documenting a Move Using Archival Description: Tools for Bridging the Gaps Between Physical and Intellectual Control
Following the move of approximately 40,000 linear feet of archival material between offsite storage facilities, the University of Southern California (USC) Libraries began a project to document these holdings’ new locations using ArchivesSpace. This case study explores a combination of tools--including the ArchivesSpace API, Python scripts, OpenRefine, and spreadsheet applications--that the USC Libraries used to batch-edit and create container data in ArchivesSpace following the move. The paper discusses the challenges and shortcomings of these tools for editing particular forms of legacy data entered into USC’s instance of ArchivesSpace long before the move. When the creators of this past description prioritized the work of establishing intellectual control (describing the informational content of archival resources) using methods that neglected descriptive prerequisites for the future maintenance of physical control (tracking the physical locations of archival holdings), the tools outlined in this paper were less effective in editing that legacy data
Using a Deterioration Index Score to Improve Patient Outcomes
Quick recognition and response to clinical deterioration have a significant impact on patient mortality and outcomes. Nurses’ confidence in their ability to recognize signs and symptoms of deterioration and activate rapid response teams (RRT) is vital in preventing code blues and transfers to a higher level of care. The objective of this project was to determine the effect of an educational intervention on nurse acknowledgment of the deterioration index score and nurse confidence in intervening to improve patient outcomes by alerting the Rapid Response Team (RRT) within two months for adult patients on a medical-surgical unit. Findings from the project revealed nurses’ confidence improved in recognizing and responding, and assessing for clinical deterioration, but did not improve nurse confidence in intervening and evaluating interventions. The deterioration index (DI) score best practice advisory (BPA) acknowledgment did not improve post-educational intervention as nurses dismissed 100% of the BPAs. Rapid response team calls slightly improved by 10% post-intervention than pre-intervention with slightly less patients requiring transfer to a higher level of care. Staffing shortages and years of experience may have influenced the nurse’s ability to effectively recognize and respond to clinical changes. Without proper training and support nurses’ confidence in recognizing and responding to deterioration may be delayed, resulting in unwanted patient outcomes. Although this project did not produce the intended outcomes, it did identify an opportunity to improve internal training and enhance the current process
The Impact Of Education On Obesity Among Blacks And Whites Living In New York City
This analysis examines the role of both race and ethnicity in obesity among residents of New York City. An increase in educational attainment is typically associated with lower Body Mass Index (BMI). The primary research question looks at whether the protective effect of education on obesity is equivalent among Blacks and Whites living in New York City. Predicted probabilities of the rate changes across educational gradients and race/ethnic groups were calculated using data from the 2012 Community Health Survey, a telephone survey conducted annually by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). Logistic regression and predicted probabilities confirmed the primary and secondary hypotheses that increased education leads to lower rates of obesity among both Blacks and Whites, but the effect differs between the two
The relative stimulus value of voices and faces as measured by the method of recognition
When Ebbinghaus published the results of his experimental investigations of memory in 1885 his introductory chapter pointed out the bare knowledge of the existence of memory and its effects. Historically in studies of memory our information came in large measure from the observation of the extreme and especially striking cases. The difficulties of scientific studies and the indefinite unspecialised knowledge of the nature of memory vas almost prohibitive in undertaking new investigations
Understanding the Cultural and Nationalistic Impacts of the \u3cem\u3emoguchaya kuchka\u3c/em\u3e
This paper explores Russian culture beginning in the mid nineteenth-century as the leading group of composers and musicians known as the moguchaya kuchka, or The Mighty Five, sought to influence Russian culture and develop a pure school of Russian music amid rampant westernization. Comprised of César Cui, Alexander Borodin, Mily Balakirev, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, this group of inspired musicians opposed westernization and supported Official Nationalism by the incorporation of folklore, local village traditions, and promotion of their Tsar as a supreme political leader. In particular, the works of Balakirev, Cui, and Mussorgsky established cultural pride and contributed to Russian nationalism. Through studying the works and cultural context of these three influential composers, one can gain both a better understanding of the essence of Russian Official Nationalism in the nineteenth century and an enriched appreciation for the prevalent Russian musical styles and compositional techniques that were employed to achieve a unique Russian sound
Wood as an Energy Source in the Tennessee Valley Region
TVA has been working with wood energy production systems for only a short time, but we have been involved with forest development for many years, and our experience has led us to believe in the viability of using wood for energy production. Commercial forests of the Tennessee Valley region (125 watershed counties, plus another 76 counties where TVA provides Power) occupy some 30.5 million acres. The annual total tree growth from these lands is about 2.3 billion cubic feet of wood-equivalent to 38 million tons of coal in heat value. Conventional forest products now consume some 580 million cubic feet of wood annually, and allowing for a 2 percent buildup tn inventory, a residual of some 1 billion cubic feet could be used for expansion of conventional wood-using industries and energy. If the conventional wood-using industries double their use of wood resources, the current forest biomass growth in the Valley region is still sufficient to supply some 15 million coal-ton- equivalents of energy (nearly one-third quadrillion Btu\u27s), or about bo percent of the coal energy used in TVA\u27s steam plants (TVA\u27s 12 coal-fired steam Plants burned 37.b million tons of coal in calendar year 1977). Through the introduction of improved forestry practices in the Valley, it is realistic to expect at least a 50 percent increase in forest growth, thus making an even greater volume of wood available for energy
