Science centres around the world see unrest for art and science in society
In present times it would not be appropriate to say art made a “debut” in science centres, as it has been a feature since the beginning of their history, and it appeared precisely in the ‘parent’ science centre, the Exploratorium. However, now it is time to check the progress. There is unrest for this issue, as in history-making times, and it is worthwhile to follow the new developments and hear the words of the coordinators of the artistic activities in science centres and, more in general, in science museums, and also of the artists involved in the process. The goal is to promote a debate on the final results of this phenomenon and on what will happen next. Also, emphasis should be put on the importance for each museum to define right from the start an ‘art policy’, even a complex one, but somehow structured, that may be employed at many levels according to the needs of the museum itself
Organizing a sonic space through vocal imitations
3noA two-dimensional space is proposed for exploration and interactive design in the sonic
space of a sound model. A number of reference items, positioned as landmarks in the space,
contain both a synthetic sound and its vocal imitation, and the space is geometrically arranged
based on the acoustic features of these imitations. The designer may specify new points in the
space either by geometric interpolation or by direct vocalization. In order to understand how
the vast and complex space of the human voice could be organized in two dimensions, we
collected a database of short excerpts of vocal imitations. By clustering the sound samples on
a space whose dimensionality has been reduced to the two principal components, it has been
experimentally checked how meaningful the resulting clusters are for humans. The procedure
of dimensionality reduction and clustering is demonstrated in the case of imitations of engine

Accurate glottal model parametrization by integrating audio and high-speed endoscopic video data
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of using video data for voice source parametrization in the representation of voice production through physical modeling. Laryngeal imaging techniques can be effectively used to obtain vocal fold video sequences and to derive time patterns of relevant glottal cues, such as folds edge position or glottal area. In many physically based numerical models of the vocal folds, these parameters are estimated from the inverse filtered glottal flow waveform, obtained from audio recordings of the sound pressure at lips. However, this model inversion process is often problematic and affected by accuracy and robustness issues. It is here discussed how video analysis of the fold vibration might be effectively coupled to the parametric estimation algorithms based on voice recordings, to improve accuracy and robustness of model inversio
A New Bi-Functional Derivative of Polyethylene Glycol as Molecular Carrier for Eugenol and Ibuprofen
Eugenol (EU) and ibuprofene (IBU) were covalently bound to a bi-functionalized PEG, used as molecular carrier of drugs and the release kinetics of the two bioactive molecules was studied in vitro in buffer solution at pH 7.4, in simulated gastric fluid and in mouse plasma. The hydrolysis studies showed a specific cleavage dependent on the pH of the medium and by the presence of proteolytic enzymes in mouse plasma. Studies in vitro on the release of the parent drug from this double prodrug in various media, indicate that the adduct may be sufficiently stable to pass intact the gastrointestinal tract and release into the circulation EU and IBU. Many advantages may be achieved by the synthesis of the prodrug EU-PEG-IBU related to synergistic analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, to the reduction of the adverse reactions and the improvement of the chemical-physical properties of the parent drugs
An Easy Route to Enantiomerically Enriched 7- and 8-Hydroxystearic Acids by Olefin Metathesis - Based Approach
The synthesis of enantiomerically enriched 7- and 8-hydroxystearic acids (7- and 8-HSA) has been successfully accomplished starting from chiral non racemic 1-pentadecen-4-ol and 1-tetradecen-4-ol respectively. Their Yamaguchi\u2019s esterification with 4-pentenoic and 5-hexenoic acids respectively afforded the suitable dienic esters which were submitted to ring closing metathesis reaction. After hydrogenation and basic hydrolysis of the complex reaction mixture, chiral non racemic 7- and 8-HSA were obtained in about 40% total yield
Auditory representations as landmarks in the sound design space
A graphical tool for the timbre space exploration and interactive
design of complex sounds by physical modeling synthesis
is presented. It is built around an auditory representation
of sounds based on spike functions and provides the
designer with both a graphical and an auditory insight. The
auditory representation of a number of reference sounds, located
as landmarks in a 2D sound design space, provides the
designer with an effective aid to direct his search along the
paths that lie in the proximity of the most inspiring landmarks
Carrier-Induced Magnetic Circular Dichloism in the Magnetoresistive Pyrochlore Tl2Mn2O7
Infrared magnetic circular dichloism (MCD), or equivalently magneto-optical
Kerr effect, has been measured on the Tl2Mn2O7 pyrochlore, which is well known
for exhibiting a large magnetoresistance around the Curie temperature T_C ~ 120
K. A circularly polarized, infrared synchrotron radiation is used as the light
source. A pronounced MCD signal is observed exactly at the plasma edge of the
reflectivity near and below T_c. However, contrary to the conventional behavior
of MCD for ferromagnets, the observed MCD of Tl2Mn2O7 grows with the applied
magnetic field, and not scaled with the internal magnetization. It is shown
that these results can be basically understood in terms of a classical
magnetoplasma resonance. The absence of a magnetization-scaled MCD indicates a
weak spin-orbit coupling of the carriers in Tl2Mn2O7. We discuss the present
