Polish cultural diplomacy and historical memory: the case of the museum of the second world war in Gdańsk
This article examines the mobilization of historical memory as a resource for cultural diplomacy through the medium of the museum. Noting the increasing trend for states to incorporate “dark heritage” of conflict into their cultural diplomacy strategies, the article examines the recent case of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, which has been heavily criticized by the current Polish government for its alleged failure to convey an adequately heroic account of the war to both domestic and foreign audiences. The article demonstrates that the current Polish government has placed great importance on historical memory as a means of persuading European partners of the validity of its vision of European history and of Poland’s place within the contemporary European project. However, in its approach to the Museum of the Second World War, we argue, the Polish government has not developed an effective strategy for mobilizing historical memory to influence others. This case study allows us to demonstrate the potential pitfalls of drawing on historical memory in the context of cultural diplomacy
Eternal Sunshine of the Solar Panel
The social dynamics of residential solar panel use within a theoretical
population are studied using a compartmental model. In this study we consider
three solar power options commonly available to consumers: the community block,
leasing, and buying. In particular we are interested in studying how social
influence affects the dynamics within these compartments. As a result of this
research a threshold value is determined, beyond which solar panels persist in
the population. In addition, as is standard in this type of study, we perform
equilibrium analysis, as well as uncertainty and sensitivity analyses on the
threshold value. We also perform uncertainty analysis on the population levels
of each compartment. The analysis shows that social influence plays an
important role in the adoption of residential solar panels
The use of the task-based instruction in the development of lexical compentence
A new transcript in the TCRB locus unveils the human ortholog of the mouse pre-Dß1 promoter
Introduction: While most transcripts arising from the human T Cell Receptor locus reflect fully rearranged genes, several germline transcripts have been identified. We describe a new germline transcript arising from the human TCRB locus.
Methods: cDNA sequencing, promoter, and gene expression analyses were used to characterize the new transcript.
Results: The new germline transcript encoded by the human TCRB locus consists of a new exon of 103bp, which we named TRBX1 (X1), spliced with the first exon of gene segments C ss 1 or C ss 2. X1 is located upstream of gene segment D ss 1 and is therefore deleted from a V-DJ rearranged TCRB locus. The X1-C ss transcripts do not appear to code for a protein. We define their transcription start and minimal promoter. These transcripts are found in populations of mature T lymphocytes from blood or tissues and in T cell clones with a monoallelic TCRB rearrangement. In immature thymocytes, they are already detectable in CD1a(-)CD34(+)CD4(-)CD8(-) cells, therefore before completion of the TCRB rearrangements.
Conclusions: The X1 promoter appears to be the ortholog of the mouse pre-D ss 1 promoter (PD ss 1). Like PD ss 1, its activation is regulated by E ss in T cells and might facilitate the TCRB rearrangement process by contributing to the accessibility of the D ss 1 locus
Global Emergency Medicine: A Review of the Literature From 2012
Objectives The Global Emergency Medicine Literature Review ( GEMLR ) conducts an annual search of peer‐reviewed and grey literature relevant to global emergency medicine ( EM ) to identify, review, and disseminate the most important new research in this field to a worldwide audience of academics and clinical practitioners. Methods This year, our search identified 4,818 articles written in six languages. These articles were distributed among 20 reviewers for initial screening based on their relevance to the field of global EM . Two additional reviewers searched and screened the grey literature. A total of 224 articles were deemed appropriate by at least one reviewer and were approved by their editor for formal scoring of overall quality and importance. Results Of the 224 articles that met our predetermined inclusion criteria, 56% were categorized as Emergency Care in Resource‐limited Settings, 18% as EM development, and 26% as Disaster and Humanitarian Response. A total of 28 articles received scores of 16 or higher and were selected for formal summary and critique. Inter‐rater reliability for two reviewers using our scoring system was good, with an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.625 (95% confidence interval = 0.512 to 0.711). Conclusions In 2012 there were more disaster and humanitarian response articles than in previous years. As in prior years, the majority of articles addressed the acute management of infectious diseases or the care of vulnerable populations such as children and pregnant women. Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/99685/1/acem12173.pd
B-1 Cell Heterogeneity and the Regulation of Natural and Antigen-Induced IgM Production.
A small subset of B cells, termed B-1 cells, with developmental origins, phenotypes, and functions that are distinct from those of conventional B cells exist in mice. It contributes the vast majority of spontaneously produced "natural" IgM. Natural IgM is constitutively produced, even in the absence of microbiota, and fulfills many distinct functions in tissue homeostasis and host defense. B-1 cells also respond with IgM production to innate signals and pathogen exposure, while maintaining steady-state levels natural IgM. Thus, within the B-1 cell pool, cells of distinct and heterogeneous functionality must exist to facilitate these different functions. This review considers three factors that may contribute to this heterogeneity: first, developmental differences regarding the origins of the precursors, second, tissue-specific signals that may differentially affect B-1 cells in the tissue compartments, and finally responsiveness to self-antigens as well as innate and antigen-specific signals. All three are likely to shape the repertoire and responsiveness of B-1 cells to homeostatic- and antigen-induced signals and thus contribute to the functional heterogeneity among these innate-like B cells
Is there an association between PEPFAR funding and improvement in national health indicators in Africa? A retrospective study
BACKGROUND: The US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) was reauthorized in June 2008 with a three-fold increase in funds, and a broader, more explicit mandate to improve health in the low- and middle-income countries that it funded. However, the ability of a disease-specific, or vertical, programme to have a spill-over effect and improve health outcomes has been questioned. In this study, we sought to examine associations between being designated as a PEPFAR focus country (and receiving increased PEPFAR funding) and non-HIV-specific health outcomes in the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Region, the area most affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of publicly available health outcomes data published by the World Health Organization was performed for all countries in the WHO Africa Region. Fractional changes in health indicators between 2000 and 2006 were calculated, and PEPFAR focus and non-focus countries were then compared. RESULTS: Overall, countries in the WHO Africa Region showed a small worsening in health outcomes status when all indicators were analyzed together and weighted equally. However, more health indicators improved than worsened over this six-year period. A comparison of PEPFAR focus and non-focus countries found no significant difference in the fractional change among 13 of 14 health indicators during the study period. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that vertical programmes, even one that is the scale of PEPFAR, may have little or no impact on health outcomes not explicitly targeted
The Three B’s of Branding: Applying the Brand Evolution Process in Marketing Classes
This paper explores the concept of branding and introduces the Brand Evolution Process (BEP) as a comprehensive framework for marketing education. Branding, a pivotal aspect of marketing, has evolved over time and remains critical in today’s dynamic business environment. The BEP consists of three stages: Brand Development, Brand Management, and Brand Optimization. It offers a structured approach to understanding how brands are created, managed, and adapted over time. The study emphasizes the importance of brand evolution in marketing and education. Brand Development involves defining the brand’s identity, attributes, and positioning, while Brand Management focuses on maintaining and leveraging brand equity. Brand Optimization examines strategies like extensions and repositioning. By organizing these concepts into a cohesive framework, the BEP serves as a valuable tool for marketing educators. Future research may measure the effects of incorporating the BEP into the curriculum and its alignment with employer expectations. This paper underscores the holistic nature of branding and its significance in contemporary marketing education, providing a foundation for the development of future brand managers
