Presumption in Parliamentary Debate: Examining Whately\u27s Ideas and their Application to an Emerging and Evolving Debate Style

    Get PDF
Presumption as a part of formal debate is examined in this paper, which discusses Richard Whately\u27s ideas about presumption and burden of proof in argumentation, how these ideas have been applied as paradigms and judging criteria in competitive debate, and how these same ideas fit into the practice of parliamentary debate. General conclusions about broad applications of debate rules are drawn, then, from this example, and suggestions are made for future study

    Get PDF

A comparison of sensitized Ln(III) emission using pyridine- and pyrazine-2,6-dicarboxylates - part II

The synthesis, X-ray structures and photophysical properties of several new Ln(iii) complexes with the dianion of pyrazine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H 2PYZ) that demonstrate excellent stability and solubility in non-aqueous solution are reported, and compared to structurally analogous complexes derived from pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid (H2DPA). The Eu(iii) and Yb(iii) complexes demonstrate efficient metal centered luminescence in the visible and Near Infra-Red (NIR) regions, respectively. Low temperature (77 K) phosphorescence measurements using the corresponding Gd(iii) complex has allowed the photophysical properties of the sensitizer to be rationalized, together with corresponding TD-DFT studies for a model complex. Lastly, we have evaluated the sensitization efficiencies for these complexes, and have undertaken femtosecond transient absorption (TA) measurements in order to evaluate the relative importance of the intersystem crossing and energy transfer processes involved with sensitized Ln(iii) emission via the antennae effect

BLUF Domain Function Does Not Require a Metastable Radical Intermediate State

BLUF (blue light using flavin) domain proteins are an important family of blue light-sensing proteins which control a wide variety of functions in cells. The primary light-activated step in the BLUF domain is not yet established. A number of experimental and theoretical studies points to a role for photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between a highly conserved tyrosine and the flavin chromophore to form a radical intermediate state. Here we investigate the role of PET in three different BLUF proteins, using ultrafast broadband transient infrared spectroscopy. We characterize and identify infrared active marker modes for excited and ground state species and use them to record photochemical dynamics in the proteins. We also generate mutants which unambiguously show PET and, through isotope labeling of the protein and the chromophore, are able to assign modes characteristic of both flavin and protein radical states. We find that these radical intermediates are not observed in two of the three BLUF domains studied, casting doubt on the importance of the formation of a population of radical intermediates in the BLUF photocycle. Further, unnatural amino acid mutagenesis is used to replace the conserved tyrosine with fluorotyrosines, thus modifying the driving force for the proposed electron transfer reaction; the rate changes observed are also not consistent with a PET mechanism. Thus, while intermediates of PET reactions can be observed in BLUF proteins they are not correlated with photoactivity, suggesting that radical intermediates are not central to their operation. Alternative nonradical pathways including a keto–enol tautomerization induced by electronic excitation of the flavin ring are considered

Responsive versus scheduled feeding in preterm infants (Review)

    Get PDF
Scheduled feeding of prescribed enteral volumes remains standard practice for preterm infants. However, feeding preterm infants in response to their feeding and satiation cues (responsive, cue-based, or infant led feeding) rather than at scheduled intervals might enhance parent experience and satisfaction, help in the establishment of independent oral feeding, increase nutrient intake and growth rates, and allow earlier hospital discharge. Objectives: To assess the effect of feeding preterm infants on a responsive basis versus feeding prescribed volumes at scheduled intervals on growth and duration of hospital stay.</p

A análise é ancorada por uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o romance policial, em teThis study aims to investigate the construction of suspense in Suicidas, by Raphael Montes, in the context of the contemporary Brazilian crime novel, seeking to understand how suspense is created through the narrative procedures and strategies employed by the author, as well as analyzing the relationship between reality and fiction and the impact of this relationship on the representation of extreme violence in the plot.
