    Josephson Effect in Pb/I/NbSe2 Scanning Tunneling Microscope Junctions

    We have developed a method for the reproducible fabrication of superconducting scanning tunneling microscope (STM) tips. We use these tips to form superconductor/insulator/superconductor tunnel junctions with the STM tip as one of the electrodes. We show that such junctions exhibit fluctuation dominated Josephson effects, and describe how the Josephson product IcRn can be inferred from the junctions' tunneling characteristics in this regime. This is first demonstrated for tunneling into Pb films, and then applied in studies of single crystals of NbSe2. We find that in NbSe2, IcRn is lower than expected, which could be attributed to the interplay between superconductivity and the coexisting charge density wave in this material.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures.     Exploring the anthelmintic properties of Australian native shrubs with respect to their potential role in livestock grazing systems

    We measured in vitro anthelmintic activity in extracts from 85 species of Australian native shrub, with a view to identifying species able to provide a degree of worm control in grazing systems. Approximately 40% of the species showed significant activity in inhibiting development of Haemonchus contortus larvae. The most active extracts showed IC50 values of 60–300 mg/ml. Pre-incubation with polyvinylpolypyrrolidine removed the activity from some extracts, implicating tannins as the bioactive agent, while in other cases the pre-incubation had no effect, indicating the presence of other anthelmintic compounds. Plant reproductive maturity (onset of flowering or fruiting) was associated with increasing anthelmintic activity in some species. Variability was observed between plants of the same species growing in different environments, while variation between individual plants of the same species within a single field suggests the existence of distinct chemotypes. Significant activity against adult H. contortus worms in vitro was also demonstrated in a limited number of extracts tested against this life stage. Our study indicates that there is potential for Australian native shrubs to play an anthelmintic role in grazing systems, and highlights some plant biology factors which will need to be considered in order to maximize any anthelmintic effects.A.     A New Method of Probing the Phonon Mechanism in Superconductors including MgB2_{2}

    Weak localization has a strong influence on both the normal and superconducting properties of metals. In particular, since weak localization leads to the decoupling of electrons and phonons, the temperature dependence of resistance (i.e., λtr\lambda_{tr}) is decreasing with increasing disorder, as manifested by Mooij's empirical rule. In addition, Testardi's universal correlation of TcT_{c} (i.e., λ\lambda) and the resistance ratio (i.e., λtr\lambda_{tr}) follows. This understanding provides a new means to probe the phonon mechanism in superconductors including MgB2_{2}. The merits of this method are its applicability to any superconductors and its reliability because the McMillan's electron-phonon coupling constant λ\lambda and λtr\lambda_{tr} change in a broad range, from finite values to zero, due to weak localization. Karkin et al's preliminary data of irradiated MgB2_{2} show the Testardi correlation, indicating that the dominant pairing mechanism in MgB2_{2} is the phonon-mediated interaction.Comment: 9 pages, latex, 3 figure

    With the constraint that Tc=39T_c = 39 K, as observed for MgB2_2, we use the Eliashberg equations to compute possible allowed values of the isotope coefficient, β\beta. We find that while the observed value β=0.32\beta= 0.32 can be obtained in principle, it is difficult to reconcile a recently calculated spectral function with such a low observed value

    Universal Conductivity in the Two dimensional Boson Hubbard Model

    We use Quantum Monte Carlo to evaluate the conductivity σ\sigma of the 2--dimensional disordered boson Hubbard model at the superfluid-bose glass phase boundary. At the critical point for particle density ρ=0.5\rho=0.5, we find σc=(0.45±0.07)σQ\sigma_{c}=(0.45 \pm 0.07) \sigma_{Q}, where σQ=e2/h\sigma_{Q}= e_{*}^{2} / h from a finite size scaling analysis of the superfluid density. We obtain σc=(0.47±0.08)σQ\sigma_{c}=(0.47 \pm 0.08) \sigma_{Q} from a direct calculation of the current--current correlation function. Simulations at the critical points for other particle densities, ρ=0.75\rho=0.75 and 1.01.0, give similar values for σ\sigma. We discuss possible origins of the difference in this value from that recently obtained by other numerical approaches.Comment: 20 pages, figures available upon request.     Density of states and magnetoconductance of disordered Au point contacts

    We report the first low temperature magnetotransport measurements on electrochemically fabricated atomic scale gold nanojunctions. As T0T \to 0, the junctions exhibit nonperturbatively large zero bias anomalies (ZBAs) in their differential conductance. We consider several explanations and find that the ZBAs are consistent with a reduced local density of states (LDOS) in the disordered metal. We suggest that this is a result of Coulomb interactions in a granular metal with moderate intergrain coupling. Magnetoconductance of atomic scale junctions also differs significantly from that of less geometrically constrained devices, and supports this explanation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures.     The Superconducting Instabilities of the non half-filled Hubbard Model in Two Dimensions

    The problem of weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice is formulated in terms of one-loop renormalization group. Starting from the action for the entire Brillouin zone (and not with a low-energy effective action) we reduce successively the cutoff Λ\Lambda about the Fermi surface and follow the renormalization of the coupling UU as a function of three energy-momenta. We calculate the intrinsic scale TcoT_{co} where the renormalization group flow crosses over from the regime (Λ>Tco\Lambda > T_{co}) where the electron-electron (e-e) and electron-hole (e-h) terms are equally important to the regime (Λ<Tco\Lambda < T_{co}) where only the e-e term plays a role. In the low energy regime only the pairing interaction VV is marginally relevant, containing contributions from all renormalization group steps of the regime Λ>Tco\Lambda > T_{co}. After diagonalization of VΛ=TcoV_{\Lambda =T_{co}}, we identify its most attractive eigenvalue λmin\lambda _{\min}. At low filling, λmin\lambda _{\min} corresponds to the B2B_2 representation (dxyd_{xy} symmetry), while near half filling the strongest attraction occurs in the B1B_1 representation (dx2y2d_{x^2-y^2} symmetry). In the direction of the van Hove singularities, the order parameter shows peaks with increasing strength as one approaches half filling. Using the form of pairing and the structure of the renormalization group equations in the low energy regime, we give our interpretation of ARPES experiments trying to determine the symmetry of the order parameter in the Bi2212 high-TcT_{c} compound.Comment: 24 pages (RevTeX) + 11 figures (the tex file appeared incomplete
