Probabilistic Search for Object Segmentation and Recognition
The problem of searching for a model-based scene interpretation is analyzed
within a probabilistic framework. Object models are formulated as generative
models for range data of the scene. A new statistical criterion, the truncated
object probability, is introduced to infer an optimal sequence of object
hypotheses to be evaluated for their match to the data. The truncated
probability is partly determined by prior knowledge of the objects and partly
learned from data. Some experiments on sequence quality and object segmentation
and recognition from stereo data are presented. The article recovers classic
concepts from object recognition (grouping, geometric hashing, alignment) from
the probabilistic perspective and adds insight into the optimal ordering of
object hypotheses for evaluation. Moreover, it introduces point-relation
densities, a key component of the truncated probability, as statistical models

Low Dopamine D2/D3 Receptor Availability is Associated with Steep Discounting of Delayed Rewards in Methamphetamine Dependence.
BackgroundIndividuals with substance use disorders typically exhibit a predilection toward instant gratification with apparent disregard for the future consequences of their actions. Indirect evidence suggests that low dopamine D2-type receptor availability in the striatum contributes to the propensity of these individuals to sacrifice long-term goals for short-term gain; however, this possibility has not been tested directly. We investigated whether striatal D2/D3 receptor availability is negatively correlated with the preference for smaller, more immediate rewards over larger, delayed alternatives among research participants who met DSM-IV criteria for methamphetamine (MA) dependence.MethodsFifty-four adults (n = 27 each: MA-dependent, non-user controls) completed the Kirby Monetary Choice Questionnaire, and underwent positron emission tomography scanning with [(18)F]fallypride.ResultsMA users displayed steeper temporal discounting (p = 0.030) and lower striatal D2/D3 receptor availability (p < 0.0005) than controls. Discount rate was negatively correlated with striatal D2/D3 receptor availability, with the relationship reaching statistical significance in the combined sample (r = -0.291, p = 0.016) and among MA users alone (r = -0.342, p = 0.041), but not among controls alone (r = -0.179, p = 0.185); the slopes did not differ significantly between MA users and controls (p = 0.5).ConclusionsThese results provide the first direct evidence of a link between deficient D2/D3 receptor availability and steep temporal discounting. This finding fits with reports that low striatal D2/D3 receptor availability is associated with a higher risk of relapse among stimulant users, and may help to explain why some individuals choose to continue using drugs despite knowledge of their eventual negative consequences. Adaptive Optics Images of Kepler Objects of Interest
All transiting planets are at risk of contamination by blends with nearby,
unresolved stars. Blends dilute the transit signal, causing the planet to
appear smaller than it really is, or produce a false positive detection when
the target star is blended with eclipsing binary stars. This paper reports on
high spatial-resolution adaptive optics images of 90 Kepler planetary
candidates. Companion stars are detected as close as 0.1 arcsec from the target
star. Images were taken in the near-infrared (J and Ks bands) with ARIES on the
MMT and PHARO on the Palomar Hale 200-inch. Most objects (60%) have at least
one star within 6 arcsec separation and a magnitude difference of 9. Eighteen
objects (20%) have at least one companion within 2 arcsec of the target star; 6
companions (7%) are closer than 0.5 arcsec. Most of these companions were
previously unknown, and the associated planetary candidates should receive
additional scrutiny. Limits are placed on the presence of additional companions
for every system observed, which can be used to validate planets statistically
using the BLENDER method. Validation is particularly critical for low-mass,
potentially Earth-like worlds, which are not detectable with current-generation
radial velocity techniques. High-resolution images are thus a crucial component

Lack of Transit Timing Variations of OGLE-TR-111b: A re-analysis with six new epochs
We present six new transits of the exoplanet OGLE-TR-111b observed with the
Magellan Telescopes in Chile between April 2008 and March 2009. We combine
these new transits with five previously published transit epochs for this
planet between 2005 and 2006 to extend the analysis of transit timing
variations reported for this system. We derive a new planetary radius value of
1.019 +/- 0.026 R_J, which is intermediate to the previously reported radii of
1.067 +/- 0.054 R_J (Winn et al. 2007) and 0.922 +/- 0.057 R_J (Diaz et al.
2008). We also examine the transit timing variation and duration change claims
of Diaz et al. (2008). Our analysis of all eleven transit epochs does not
reveal any points with deviations larger than 2 sigma, and most points are well
within 1 sigma. Although the transit duration nominally decreases over the four
year span of the data, systematic errors in the photometry can account for this
result. Therefore, there is no compelling evidence for either a timing or a
duration variation in this system. Numerical integrations place an upper limit
of about 1 M_E on the mass of a potential second planet in a 2:1 mean-motion

Cross Sections from 800 MeV Proton Irradiation of Terbium
A single terbium foil was irradiated with 800 MeV protons to ascertain the
potential for production of lanthanide isotopes of interest in medical,
astrophysical, and basic science research and to contribute to nuclear data
repositories. Isotopes produced in the foil were quantified by gamma
spectroscopy. Cross sections for 36 isotopes produced in the irradiation are
reported and compared with predictions by the MCNP6 transport code using the
CEM03.03, Bertini, and INCL+ABLA event generators. Our results indicate the
need to accurately consider fission and fragmentation of relatively light
target nuclei like terbium in the modeling of nuclear reactions at 800 MeV. The
predictive power of the code was found to be different for each event generator
tested but was satisfactory for most of the product yields in the mass region
where spallation reactions dominate. However, none of the event generators'

Models and metaphors: complexity theory and through-life management in the built environment
Complexity thinking may have both modelling and metaphorical applications in the through-life management of the built environment. These two distinct approaches are examined and compared. In the first instance, some of the sources of complexity in the design, construction and maintenance of the built environment are identified. The metaphorical use of complexity in management thinking and its application in the built environment are briefly examined. This is followed by an exploration of modelling techniques relevant to built environment concerns. Non-linear and complex mathematical techniques such as fuzzy logic, cellular automata and attractors, may be applicable to their analysis. Existing software tools are identified and examples of successful built environment applications of complexity modelling are given. Some issues that arise include the definition of phenomena in a mathematically usable way, the functionality of available software and the possibility of going beyond representational modelling. Further questions arising from the application of complexity thinking are discussed, including the possibilities for confusion that arise from the use of metaphor. The metaphor of a 'commentary machine' is suggested as a possible way forward and it is suggested that an appropriate linguistic analysis can in certain situations reduce perceived complexity
Managed moves: schools collaborating for collective gain
Government guidance in the United Kingdom encourages groups of schools to take collective responsibility for supporting and making provision for excluded pupils and those at risk of exclusion. Managed-moves are one way that some schools and authorities are enacting such guidance. This paper presents the results of an evaluation of one such scheme. The scheme, involving seven neighbouring secondary schools, was nearing its first year of completion. The paper draws primarily on interview data with pupils, parents and school staff to describe a number of positive outcomes associated with the scheme and to explore how these were achieved. We found that while some of these could be attributed directly to the managed-move, others arose from the more inclusive ethos and practices of particular schools. The concepts of tailored support, care and commitment emerged as strong themes that underpinned the various practical ways in which some schools in the cluster were able to re-engage 'at-risk' pupils. As managed moves become more widely practiced it will be important to remember that it is how the move proceeds and develops rather than the move itself that will ultimately make the difference for troubled and troublesome pupils

Ensemble prediction for nowcasting with a convection-permitting model—I: description of the system and the impact of radar-derived surface precipitation rates
A key strategy to improve the skill of quantitative predictions of precipitation, as well as hazardous weather such as severe thunderstorms and flash floods is to exploit the use of observations of convective activity (e.g. from radar). In this paper, a convection-permitting ensemble prediction system (EPS) aimed at addressing the problems of forecasting localized weather events with relatively short predictability time scale and based on a 1.5 km grid-length version of the Met Office Unified Model is presented. Particular attention is given to the impact of using predicted observations of radar-derived precipitation intensity in the ensemble transform Kalman filter (ETKF) used within the EPS. Our initial results based on the use of a 24-member ensemble of forecasts for two summer case studies show that the convective-scale EPS produces fairly reliable forecasts of temperature, horizontal winds and relative humidity at 1 h lead time, as evident from the inspection of rank histograms. On the other hand, the rank histograms seem also to show that the EPS generates too much spread for forecasts of (i) surface pressure and (ii) surface precipitation intensity. These may indicate that for (i) the value of surface pressure observation error standard deviation used to generate surface pressure rank histograms is too large and for (ii) may be the result of non-Gaussian precipitation observation errors. However, further investigations are needed to better understand these findings. Finally, the inclusion of predicted observations of precipitation from radar in the 24-member EPS considered in this paper does not seem to improve the 1-h lead time forecast skill
