Functional centrality in graphs
In this paper we introduce the functional centrality as a generalization of
the subgraph centrality. We propose a general method for characterizing nodes
in the graph according to the number of closed walks starting and ending at the
node. Closed walks are appropriately weighted according to the topological
features that we need to measure
Multi-objective Optimisation of a Water Distribution Network with a Sequence-based Selection Hyper-heuristic

The water distribution network design problem is an example of such a problem, and this work employs a recent
hyper-heuristic that generates sequences of low-level heuristics to solve the multi-objective water distribution
design problem. The results presented are comparable to those generated by state-of-the-art metaheuristics, as
well as a single-objective version of the algorithm from the literature. The information revealed from analysing
the sequences generated to solve the problem reveal important information about the nature of the problem space
that is not available from the metaheuristics, and the entire Pareto front can be explored in a single run as opposed
to the multiple runs needed with the original single-objective algorithm
Cost-Effective Use of Silver Dressings for the Treatment of Hard-to-Heal Chronic Venous Leg Ulcers
Aim
To estimate the cost-effectiveness of silver dressings using a health economic model based on time-to-wound-healing in hard-to-heal chronic venous leg ulcers (VLUs).
Background
Chronic venous ulceration affects 1–3% of the adult population and typically has a protracted course of healing, resulting in considerable costs to the healthcare system. The pathogenesis of VLUs includes excessive and prolonged inflammation which is often related to critical colonisation and early infection. The use of silver dressings to control this bioburden and improve wound healing rates remains controversial.
Methods
A decision tree was constructed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of treatment with silver compared with non-silver dressings for four weeks in a primary care setting. The outcomes: ‘Healed ulcer’, ‘Healing ulcer’ or ‘No improvement’ were developed, reflecting the relative reduction in ulcer area from baseline to four weeks of treatment. A data set from a recent meta-analysis, based on four RCTs, was applied to the model.
Results
Treatment with silver dressings for an initial four weeks was found to give a total cost saving (£141.57) compared with treatment with non-silver dressings. In addition, patients treated with silver dressings had a faster wound closure compared with those who had been treated with non-silver dressings.
Conclusion
The use of silver dressings improves healing time and can lead to overall cost savings. These results can be used to guide healthcare decision makers in evaluating the economic aspects of treatment with silver dressings in hard-to-heal chronic VLUs

The Stable Roommates problem with short lists
We consider two variants of the classical Stable Roommates problem with
Incomplete (but strictly ordered) preference lists SRI that are degree
constrained, i.e., preference lists are of bounded length. The first variant,
EGAL d-SRI, involves finding an egalitarian stable matching in solvable
instances of SRI with preference lists of length at most d. We show that this
problem is NP-hard even if d=3. On the positive side we give a
(2d+3)/7-approximation algorithm for d={3,4,5} which improves on the known
bound of 2 for the unbounded preference list case. In the second variant of
SRI, called d-SRTI, preference lists can include ties and are of length at most
d. We show that the problem of deciding whether an instance of d-SRTI admits a
stable matching is NP-complete even if d=3. We also consider the "most stable"
version of this problem and prove a strong inapproximability bound for the d=3
case. However for d=2 we show that the latter problem can be solved in

Decitabine impact on the endocytosis regulator RhoA, the folate carriers RFC1 and FOLR1, and the glucose transporter GLUT4 in human tumors.
BackgroundIn 31 solid tumor patients treated with the demethylating agent decitabine, we performed tumor biopsies before and after the first cycle of decitabine and used immunohistochemistry (IHC) to assess whether decitabine increased expression of various membrane transporters. Resistance to chemotherapy may arise due to promoter methylation/downregulation of expression of transporters required for drug uptake, and decitabine can reverse resistance in vitro. The endocytosis regulator RhoA, the folate carriers FOLR1 and RFC1, and the glucose transporter GLUT4 were assessed.ResultsPre-decitabine RhoA was higher in patients who had received their last therapy >3 months previously than in patients with more recent prior therapy (P = 0.02), and varied inversely with global DNA methylation as assessed by LINE1 methylation (r = -0.58, P = 0.006). Tumor RhoA scores increased with decitabine (P = 0.03), and RFC1 also increased in patients with pre-decitabine scores ≤150 (P = 0.004). Change in LINE1 methylation with decitabine did not correlate significantly with change in IHC scores for any transporter assessed. We also assessed methylation of the RFC1 gene (alias SLC19A1). SLC19A1 methylation correlated with tumor LINE1 methylation (r = 0.45, P = 0.02). There was a small (statistically insignificant) decrease in SLC19A1 methylation with decitabine, and there was a trend towards change in SLC19A1 methylation with decitabine correlating with change in LINE1 methylation (r = 0.47, P <0.15). While SLC19A1 methylation did not correlate with RFC1 scores, there was a trend towards an inverse correlation between change in SLC19A1 methylation and change in RFC1 expression (r = -0.45, P = 0.19).ConclusionsIn conclusion, after decitabine administration, there was increased expression of some (but not other) transporters that may play a role in chemotherapy uptake. Larger patient numbers will be needed to define the extent to which this increased expression is associated with changes in DNA methylation
Pair Interaction Potentials of Colloids by Extrapolation of Confocal Microscopy Measurements of Collective Structure
A method for measuring the pair interaction potential between colloidal
particles by extrapolation measurement of collective structure to infinite
dilution is presented and explored using simulation and experiment. The method
is particularly well suited to systems in which the colloid is fluorescent and
refractive index matched with the solvent. The method involves characterizing
the potential of mean force between colloidal particles in suspension by
measurement of the radial distribution function using 3D direct visualization.
The potentials of mean force are extrapolated to infinite dilution to yield an
estimate of the pair interaction potential, . We use Monte Carlo (MC)
simulation to test and establish our methodology as well as to explore the
effects of polydispersity on the accuracy. We use poly-12-hydroxystearic
acid-stabilized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PHSA-PMMA) particles dispersed in
the solvent dioctyl phthalate (DOP) to test the method and assess its accuracy
for three different repulsive systems for which the range has been manipulated

Nitrogen and phosphorus limitation of oceanic microbial growth during spring in the Gulf of Aqaba
Bioassay experiments were performed to identify how growth of key groups within the microbial community was simultaneously limited by nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) availability during spring in the Gulf of Aqaba's oceanic waters. Measurements of chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration and fast repetition rate (FRR) fluorescence generally demonstrated that growth of obligate phototrophic phytoplankton was co-limited by N and P and growth of facultative aerobic anoxygenic photoheterotropic (AAP) bacteria was limited by N. Phytoplankton exhibited an increase in chl a biomass over 24 to 48 h upon relief of nutrient limitation. This response coincided with an increase in photosystem II (PSII) photochemical efficiency (F v /F m), but was preceded (within 24 h) by a decrease in effective absorption crosssection (σPSII) and electron turnover time (τ). A similar response for τ and bacterio-chl a was observed for the AAPs. Consistent with the up-regulation of PSII activity with FRR fluorescence were observations of newly synthesized PSII reaction centers via low temperature (77K) fluorescence spectroscopy for addition of N (and N + P). Flow cytometry revealed that the chl a and thus FRR fluorescence responses were partly driven by the picophytoplankton (æ10 μm) community, and in particular Synechococcus. Productivity of obligate heterotrophic bacteria exhibited the greatest increase in response to a natural (deep water) treatment, but only a small increase in response to N and P addition, demonstrating the importance of additional substrates (most likely dissolved organic carbon) in moderating the heterotrophs. These data support previous observations that the microbial community response (autotrophy relative to heterotrophy) is critically dependent upon the nature of transient nutrient enrichment. © Inter-Research 2009
HardIDX: Practical and Secure Index with SGX
Software-based approaches for search over encrypted data are still either
challenged by lack of proper, low-leakage encryption or slow performance.
Existing hardware-based approaches do not scale well due to hardware
limitations and software designs that are not specifically tailored to the
hardware architecture, and are rarely well analyzed for their security (e.g.,
the impact of side channels). Additionally, existing hardware-based solutions
often have a large code footprint in the trusted environment susceptible to
software compromises. In this paper we present HardIDX: a hardware-based
approach, leveraging Intel's SGX, for search over encrypted data. It implements
only the security critical core, i.e., the search functionality, in the trusted
environment and resorts to untrusted software for the remainder. HardIDX is
deployable as a highly performant encrypted database index: it is logarithmic
in the size of the index and searches are performed within a few milliseconds
rather than seconds. We formally model and prove the security of our scheme
showing that its leakage is equivalent to the best known searchable encryption
schemes. Our implementation has a very small code and memory footprint yet
still scales to virtually unlimited search index sizes, i.e., size is limited
only by the general - non-secure - hardware resources
