The Semiclassical and Quantum Regimes of Superradiant Light Scattering from a Bose-Einstein Condensate
We show that many features of the recent experiments of Schneble et al. [D.
Schneble, Y. Torii, M. Boyd, E.W. Streed, D.E. Pritchard and W. Ketterle,
Science vol. 300, p. 475 (2003)], which demonstrate two different regimes of
light scattering by a Bose-Einstein condensate, can be described using a
one-dimensional mean-field quantum CARL model, where optical amplification
occurs simultaneously with the production of a periodic density modulation in
the atomic medium. The two regimes of light scattering observed in these
experiments, originally described as ``Kapiza-Dirac scattering'' and
``Superradiant Rayleigh scattering'', can be interpreted as the semiclassical

A phylogeny of birds based on over 1,500 loci collected by target enrichment and high-throughput sequencing
Evolutionary relationships among birds in Neoaves, the clade comprising the
vast majority of avian diversity, have vexed systematists due to the ancient,
rapid radiation of numerous lineages. We applied a new phylogenomic approach to
resolve relationships in Neoaves using target enrichment (sequence capture) and
high-throughput sequencing of ultraconserved elements (UCEs) in avian genomes.
We collected sequence data from UCE loci for 32 members of Neoaves and one
outgroup (chicken) and analyzed data sets that differed in their amount of
missing data. An alignment of 1,541 loci that allowed missing data was 87%
complete and resulted in a highly resolved phylogeny with broad agreement
between the Bayesian and maximum-likelihood (ML) trees. Although results from
the 100% complete matrix of 416 UCE loci were similar, the Bayesian and ML
trees differed to a greater extent in this analysis, suggesting that increasing
from 416 to 1,541 loci led to increased stability and resolution of the tree.
Novel results of our study include surprisingly close relationships between
phenotypically divergent bird families, such as tropicbirds (Phaethontidae) and
the sunbittern (Eurypygidae) as well as between bustards (Otididae) and turacos
(Musophagidae). This phylogeny bolsters support for monophyletic waterbird and
landbird clades and also strongly supports controversial results from previous
studies, including the sister relationship between passerines and parrots and
the non-monophyly of raptorial birds in the hawk and falcon families. Although
significant challenges remain to fully resolving some of the deep relationships
in Neoaves, especially among lineages outside the waterbirds and landbirds,
this study suggests that increased data will yield an increasingly resolved

Quantum threshold for optomechanical self-structuring in a Bose-Einstein condensate
Theoretical analysis of the optomechanics of degenerate bosonic atoms with a single feedback mirror shows that self-structuring occurs only above an input threshold that is quantum mechanical in origin. This threshold also implies a lower limit to the size (period) of patterns that can be produced in a condensate for a given pump intensity. These thresholds are interpreted as due to the quantum rigidity of Bose-Einstein condensates, which has no classical counterpart. Above the threshold, the condensate self-organizes into an ordered supersolid state with a spatial period self-selected by optical diffraction
Classical and quantum chaos in a circular billiard with a straight cut
We study classical and quantum dynamics of a particle in a circular billiard
with a straight cut. This system can be integrable, nonintegrable with soft
chaos, or nonintegrable with hard chaos, as we vary the size of the cut. We use
a quantum web to show differences in the quantum manifestations of classical

DE Canum Venaticorum : a bright, eclipsing red dwarf–white dwarf binary
Context. Close white dwarf–red dwarf binaries must have gone through a common-envelope phase during their evolution. DE CVn is a detached white dwarf–red dwarf binary with a relatively short (∼8.7 h) orbital period. Its brightness and the presence of eclipses makes this system ideal for a more detailed study.
Aims. From a study of photometric and spectroscopic observations of DE CVn we derive the system parameters that we discuss in the framework of common-envelope evolution.
Methods. Photometric observations of the eclipses are used to determine an accurate ephemeris. From a model fit to an average lowresolution spectrum of DE CVn, we constrain the temperature of the white dwarf and the spectral type of the red dwarf. The eclipse light curve is analysed and combined with the radial velocity curve of the red dwarf determined from time-resolved spectroscopy to derive constraints on the inclination and the masses of the components in the system.
Results. The derived ephemeris is HJDmin = 2 452 784.5533(1) + 0.3641394(2) × E. The red dwarf in DE CVn has a spectral type of M3V and the white dwarf has an effective temperature of 8 000 K. The inclination of the system is 86+3◦ −2 and the mass and radius of the red dwarf are 0.41 ± 0.06 M and 0.37+0.06 −0.007 R, respectively, and the mass and radius of the white dwarf are 0.51+0.06
−0.02 M and 0.0136+0.0008 −0.0002 R, respectively.
Conclusions. We found that the white dwarf has a hydrogen-rich atmosphere (DA-type). Given that DE CVn has experienced a common-envelope phase, we can reconstruct its evolution and we find that the progenitor of the white dwarf was a relatively lowmass star (M ≤ 1.6 M). The current age of this system is 3.3−7.3 × 109 years, while it will take longer than the Hubble time for DE CVn to evolve into a semi-detached system
Sequential superradiant scattering from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates
We theoretically discuss several aspects of sequential superradiant
scattering from atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Our treatment is based on the
semiclassical description of the process in terms of the Maxwell-Schroedinger
equations for the coupled matter-wave and optical fields. First, we investigate
sequential scattering in the weak-pulse regime and work out the essential
mechanisms responsible for bringing about the characteristic fan-shaped
side-mode distribution patterns. Second, we discuss the transition between the
Kapitza-Dirac and Bragg regimes of sequential scattering in the strong-pulse
regime. Finally, we consider the situation where superradiance is initiated by
coherently populating an atomic side mode through Bragg diffraction, as in
studies of matter-wave amplification, and describe the effect on the sequential

Becoming a teacher educator – the motivational factors
This study explores the factors that influenced the transition made by three participants from primary class teacher (or first-order practitioner) to Teacher Education (TE) lecturer (or second-order practitioner) in a Scottish Teacher Education Institution (TEI). The self-study case study methodology explored the factors that encouraged, and potentially inhibited, this career change. Data collection utilised auto-ethnographic narrative and findings were reviewed using a thematic analysis. Results are considered using a theoretical framework provided by Deci and Ryan’s Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The study identified three common, key themes leading to the participants career change: exploration and reinvention, key figures and lifelong learners. The findings suggest the participants were largely intrinsically motivated to make the career change. The results provide an insight for teachers considering this move and administrators within teacher education. The personal development implications for the participants are also considered
HIV-DNA Given with or without Intradermal Electroporation Is Safe and Highly Immunogenic in Healthy Swedish HIV-1 DNA/MVA Vaccinees: A Phase I Randomized Trial
We compared safety and immunogenicity of intradermal (ID) vaccination with and without electroporation (EP) in a phase I randomized placebo-controlled trial of an HIV-DNA prime HIV-MVA boost vaccine in healthy Swedish volunteers.HIV-DNA plasmids encoding HIV-1 genes gp160 subtypes A, B and C; Rev B; Gag A and B and RTmut B were given ID at weeks 0, 6 and 12 in a dose of 0.6 mg. Twenty-five volunteers received vaccine using a needle-free device (ZetaJet) with (n=16) or without (n=9) ID EP (Dermavax). Five volunteers were placebo recipients. Boosting with recombinant MVA-CMDR expressing HIV-1 Env, Gag, Pol of CRF01_AE (HIV-MVA) or placebo was performed at weeks 24 and 40. Nine of the vaccinees received a subtype C CN54 gp140 protein boost together with HIV-MVA.The ID/EP delivery was very well tolerated. After three HIV-DNA immunizations, no statistically significant difference was seen in the IFN-γ ELISpot response rate to Gag between HIV-DNA ID/EP recipients (5/15, 33%) and HIV-DNA ID recipients (1/7, 14%, p=0.6158). The first HIV-MVA or HIV-MVA+gp140 vaccination increased the IFN-γ ELISpot response rate to 18/19 (95%). CD4+ and/or CD8+ T cell responses to Gag or Env were demonstrable in 94% of vaccinees. A balanced CD4+ and CD8+ T cell response was noted, with 78% and 71% responders, respectively. IFN-γ and IL-2 dominated the CD4+ T cell response to Gag and Env. The CD8+ response to Gag was broader with expression of IFN-γ, IL-2, MIP-1β and/or CD107. No differences were seen between DNA vaccine groups. Binding antibodies were induced after the second HIV-MVA+/-gp140 in 93% of vaccinees to subtype C Env, with the highest titers among EP/gp140 recipients.Intradermal electroporation of HIV-DNA was well tolerated. Simultaneity and generalized connections in general relativity
Stationary extended frames in general relativity are considered. The
requirement of stationarity allows to treat the spacetime as a principal fiber
bundle over the one-dimensional group of time translations. Over this bundle a
connection form establishes the simultaneity between neighboring events
accordingly with the Einstein synchronization convention. The mathematics
involved is that of gauge theories where a gauge choice is interpreted as a
global simultaneity convention. Then simultaneity in non-stationary frames is
investigated: it turns to be described by a gauge theory in a fiber bundle
without structure group, the curvature being given by the Fr\"olicher-Nijenhuis
bracket of the connection. The Bianchi identity of this gauge theory is a
differential relation between the vorticity field and the acceleration field.
In order for the simultaneity connection to be principal, a necessary and

Stationary State Solutions of a Bond Diluted Kinetic Ising Model: An Effective-Field Theory Analysis
We have examined the stationary state solutions of a bond diluted kinetic
Ising model under a time dependent oscillating magnetic field within the
effective-field theory (EFT) for a honeycomb lattice . Time evolution of
the system has been modeled with a formalism of master equation. The effects of
the bond dilution, as well as the frequency and amplitude of
the external field on the dynamic phase diagrams have been discussed in detail.
We have found that the system exhibits the first order phase transition with a
dynamic tricritical point (DTCP) at low temperature and high amplitude regions,
in contrast to the previously published results for the pure case \cite{Ling}.
Bond dilution process on the kinetic Ising model gives rise to a number of
interesting and unusual phenomena such as reentrant phenomena and has a
tendency to destruct the first-order transitions and the DTCP. Moreover, we
have investigated the variation of the bond percolation threshold as functions
