Are you reading what I am reading? The impact of contrasting alphabetic scripts on reading English
This study examines the impact of the crosslinguistic similarity of translation equivalents on word recognition by Russian-English bilinguals, who are fluent in languages with two different but partially overlapping writing systems. Current models for bilingual word recognition, like BIA+, hold that all words that are similar to the input letter string are activated and considered for selection, irrespective of the language to which they belong (Dijkstra and Van Heuven, 2002). These activation models are consistent with empirical data for bilinguals with totally different scripts, like Japanese and English (Miwa et al., 2014). Little is known about the bilingual processing of Russian and English, but studies indicate that the partially distinct character of the Russian and English scripts does not prevent co-activation (Jouravlev and Jared, 2014; Marian and Spivey, 2003; Kaushanskaya and Marian, 2007)
Monetization of emotions in the existence of an electronic nomad
Objective: to perform a philosophical analysis of the problem of emotions monetization, which is currently expanding the scope of manifestations and effects, as well as to disclosure the causes and features of this process. Methods: existential-phenomenological, analytical and logical, as well as structural and system-functional approaches. The ideas of D. Harvey, J. Baudrillard, N. Srnicek, R. van den Akker, A. Gibbons and T. Vermeulen on the state of modern society served as material for theoretical comprehension of the problem. Results: the research revealed that today the emotions monetization plays a significant role both in the life of a modern individual spending a lot of time in social networks, whom we call an electronic nomad, and of producers of goods and services, advertisers and intermediaries, bringing large profits to the latter. The consumerism ideology and the consumer society contribute to the emotions monetization, as well as the two-world, chaotic and fragmented here-existence of an electronic nomad, their loneliness and unstable structure of feelings. Consumption is not rationalized by a modern individual; it is associated with the desire for excess and is subject to a change of emotions and feelings. The nomad relies on advertising to satisfy his needs, where they are offered a product/service in an excellent form as a tempting deficiency. Today, to construct an advertising myth, databases and various platforms are used, targeting of potential customers is carried out, which allows manipulating their emotions and forcing them to make a choice. At the same time, the purchase of a product or service is associated with quickly forgetting the emotions, and possibly with subsequent disappointment. The electronic nomad, yielding to emotions, demonstrates lack of will, manipulability, and lack of reflexivity over what is happening.Scientific novelty: the results of the analysis of the current state of consumer society allow posing the problem of emotions monetization, identifying the reasons for the intensive development of this process in an electronic nomad, and discovering the features of manipulation tactics that lead to the conversion of emotions into monetary equivalent.Practical significance: consists in using the research results for further study of monetization using databases, recognizing the manipulative tactics exploiting the emotions of an electronic nomad, and problematizing the totality of emotions monetization and improving the quality of goods/services common in modern society
Ambivalent features of consumerism ideology: philosophical aspect
Objective: to study the ideology of consumerism, to identify its strategic maneuvers, to analyze the consequences of their implementation, which affected the state of modern society and the existence of a personality. Methods: logical and structural analysis, system-functional approach, comparative analysis. The material for the theoretical understanding of the problem was the ideas of J. Baudrillard and E. Cassirer. Results: the study revealed that the ideology of consumerism is addressed to the mythological type of consciousness of a personality, placing emphasis on such components as a miracle and a myth of happiness, which attracts the attention of the individual. A powerful strategic force of the consumerism ideology as a transparent control over consumer society is advertising based on the myth design technology. Its constituent elements are myth and image, which are deliberately constructed. Advertising sacralizes the promoted objects, turning them into fetishes. They become the objects of worship and lust of a consumer. Through myth and image, advertising structures the psychic reality, exerting a suggestive effect on the individual as a potential buyer of the advertised objects. The transparent manipulativeness of advertising is most clearly manifested in relation to symbolic consumption. It stimulates the consumer’s buying activity through a massive attack with signs and symbols representing the brand. Through advertising, the brand is sacralized, but its semantic significance turns out to be simulated. Dependence on symbolic consumption indicates not only the status or success of an individual, but also their lack of self-sufficiency determined by the absorption with the brand and the goods/services produced by it.Scientific novelty: consists in revealing the ambivalence of the consumerism ideology, which actively exploits the mythological type of a personality consciousness, along with the rational-pragmatic one.Practical significance: consists in using the research results to form strategies for overcoming the social crisis, further studying the current state of consumer society, the consumerism ideology, the advertising and myth design technology, as well as for forecasting the algorithms of individual actions and the possibility of correcting their worldview
Lower Eocene sedimentary succession and microfossil biostratigraphy in the central northern Caucasus basin
The lower Eocene sediments from the classical Paleogene section exposed along the Kheu River, northern Caucasus, southern Russia are here studied. This ca. 50m thick succession is lithologically contrasting: the lower and upper parts are composed by soft marls separated by a thick Radiolaria-rich unit of non-calcareous and low-calcareous mudstones with intercalations of compact cherty layers. According to nannofossil and dinocyst biostratigraphy, the unique intercalation of Total Organic Carbon (TOC)-rich sediment (sapropelitic bed) in the lower part of the lower Eocene correspond to the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) and a series of sapropelitic interlayers in the upper marly part of the lower Eocene succession correlates with the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum (EECO). The study of nannofossil and dinocyst assemblages enabled detailed zonal subdivision and first-order calibration of nannofossil and dinocyst bio-events during this time-span. The studied interval of the section embraces the complete succession of nannofossil zones NP9-NP13 of Martini, 1971, CP8-CP11 of Okada and Bukry, 1980 and CNP11-CNE5 of Agnini et al., 2014. By means of dinocyst stratigraphy, the succession of Apectodinium hyperacanthum, Axiodinium augustum, Deflandrea oebisfeldensis, Dracodinium astra, Stenodinium meckelfeldense, Dracodinium varielongitudum, Ochetodinium romanum/Samlandia chlamydophora and Areosphaeridium diktyoplokum zones are identified in the Ypresian part of the Kheu section

Media Projects of Modernity
The object of the study are media projects that are popular with mass audiences. Dedicated to current topics of fluid modernity, they turn to tactics of manipulation. They are based on the imperious nature of information. Replicating in the sociocultural space, information contributes to the subjection. But the majority of modern media projects do not structure the personality, but aggravate its fears, nervousness and irritability
Extra-adrenal nonfunctional retroperitoneal paraganglioma
Introduction. An extra-adrenal paraganglioma is a rare tumor derived from the chromaffin cells of sympathetic
ganglia.
Material & methods. This report documents a rare case of nonfunctional extra-adrenal paraganglioma in a
20-year-old woman with persistent flank pain. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed a solid
mass with calcification in center, measuring 7x6x6 cm, and localized in the left upper para-aortal retroperitoneal
region. Absence of typical clinical symptoms made a correct preoperative diagnosis unlikely. Tumor was
successfully removed through a midline laparotomy incision, and pathological analysis of the surgical specimen
revealed a paraganglioma.
Results. After 12 months, the patient is still in a good health, asymptomatic, and without evidence of tumor
recurrence.
Conclusion. This case emphasizes the necessity to include extra-adrenal paraganglioma in the differential
diagnosis and management of retroperitoneal tumors, despite its rarity
