Low temperature characterization of modulation doped SiGe grown on bonded silicon-on-insulator
Modulation doped pseudomorphic Si0.87Ge0.13 strained quantum wells were grown on bonded silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates. Comparison with similar structures grown on bulk Si(100) wafers shows that the SOI material has higher mobility at low temperatures with a maximum value of 16 810 cm 2/V s for 2.05 × 1011 cm – 2 carries at 298 mK. Effective masses obtained from the temperature dependence of Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations have a value of (0.27 ± 0.02) m0 compared to (0.23 ± 0.02) m0 for quantum wells on Si(100) while the cyclotron resonance effective masses obtained at higher magnetic fields without consideration for nonparabolicity effects have values between 0.25 and 0.29 m0. Ratios of the transport and quantum lifetimes, tau/tau q=2.13 ± 0.10, were obtained for the SOI material that are, we believe, the highest reported for any pseudomorphic SiGe modulation doped structure and demonstrates that there is less interface roughness or charge scattering in the SOI material than in metal–oxide–semiconductor field effect transistors or other pseudomorphic SiGe modulation doped quantum wells
Effetto combinato di cambiamenti climatici ed urbanizzazione sugli estremi di portata
Il termine “cambiamento idrologico” (hydrological change) è spesso utilizzato per sintetizzare quell’insieme di alterazioni della risposta idrologica dei bacini indotte da fattori naturali o antropici. ll ruolo fondamentale di tali alterazioni nel determinare fenomeni di dissesto ha stimolato l’International Association of Hydrological Scienses (IAHS) a dedicare la decade scientifica 2013-2022 (denominata “Phanta Rhei”) ai cambiamenti idrologici e all’analisi dei diversi fattori perturbanti.
I cambiamenti climatici e l’urbanizzazione sono fra i fattori antropici perturbanti più influenti e, allo stesso tempo, più diffusi a livello globale.
Il cambiamento climatico è stato abbondantemente studiato in passato, con chiare evidenze di trend sugli estremi (es. Burn et al., 2011; Arnone et al., 2013) e con numerosi esempi attestanti i possibili cambiamenti idrologici indotti (es. Wang and Alimohammadi, 2012; Francipane et al., 2015; Chiarelli et al., 2016; Pumo et al. 2016). Molto più recente è l’analisi degli effetti dell’urbanizzazione sulla risposta idrologica dei bacini (es. Salvadore et al., 2015). Il processo di urbanizzazione è associato a una perdita di “superfici permeabili” (suoli naturali), con conseguente impoverimento dei processi d’infiltrazione, alterazione ai sistemi di drenaggio naturale e ai processi di trasferimento (alterazione dei percorsi idrici e delle velocità di deflusso).
La valutazione dell’impatto di tali perturbazioni sulle portate di picco durante eventi estremi, può risultare particolarmente utile nel definire e orientare efficaci politiche di pianificazione urbana e gestione di eventi di inondazione, nonché in attività di verifica delle infrastrutture idrauliche esistenti e di progettazione di quelle future.
L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è quello di investigare gli effetti dell'interazione delle suddette perturbazioni sugli eventi estremi di deflusso.
A tale scopo, è stato ideato un esperimento numerico, applicato ad un piccolo bacino fluviale, che ha permesso di generare e confrontare serie temporali di deflusso orario sotto diversi ipotetici scenari di cambiamento.
Gli scenari, generati attraverso l’uso combinato di un modello di cambiamento di uso del suolo opportunamente implementato e di un modello di generazione di serie climatiche già esistente (Fatichi et al., 2011), descrivono situazioni estreme sia in termini di espansione delle aree urbane che in termini di variazioni (aumento o diminuzione) della precipitazione media annua (MAP). Nella creazione degli scenari climatici si è anche tenuto conto di un aumento della temperatura media, e, a parità di MAP, sono state create diverse configurazioni, caratterizzate da diversa frequenza e/o l’intensità media degli eventi di pioggia. La risposta idrologica del bacino ai vari scenari è stata riprodotta mediante il tRIBS (Ivanov et al., 2004), un modello idrologico, fisicamente basato e distribuito, in grado di simulare, con alta risoluzione temporale, anche le diverse componenti di deflusso.
I risultati mostrano un’alta sensibilità degli indicatori della risposta idrologica utilizzati alle variazioni delle caratteristiche di pioggia. In termini di deflusso totale, gli effetti dei cambiamenti climatici sembrano essere prevalenti rispetto a quelli indotti dall’espansione urbana, anche se, a una maggiore frazione di suoli impermeabili, corrisponde un chiaro aumento della componente di scorrimento veloce, i cui effetti sul deflusso totale vengono parzialmente smorzati da una simultanea riduzione della componente di deflusso lento e profondo
Prognostic role of aldosterone in patients with acute coronary syndrome: short and medium term follow-up.
AIMS: Different studies have shown a correlation between aldosterone, atherosclerosis and ischemia in the past decade. Evidence exists for the relationship between high levels of aldosterone and augmented risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, cardiac failure, coronary artery disease and stroke. The objective of this study was to determine the prognostic role of aldosterone in patients with myocardial infarction.
METHODS:The study population included 96 consecutive patients admitted to our department for ST-elevated and non-ST-elevated myocardial infarction from June 2009 to March 2012. Plasma aldosterone levels were measured at admission to hospital in all patients. A 2-year prospective follow-up was performed, and fatal events and non-fatal events, such as reinfarction, congestive heart failure and arrhythmias, were recorded.
RESULTS:Aldosterone levels at admission were associated with incidence of congestive heart failure (P\u200a=\u200a0.02), ventricular arrhythmias (P\u200a=\u200a0.01) and all complications (P\u200a=\u200a0.003) after 1-month follow-up. Moreover, high aldosterone levels gave important information in the medium term (24\u200a\ub1\u200a6 months). Specifically, aldosterone was a predictive variable of reinfarction (P\u200a<\u200a0.0001), congestive heart failure (P\u200a<\u200a0.0001) and adverse events (P\u200a=\u200a0.0002). The logistic regression analysis confirmed these results and showed that aldosterone may be predictive of adverse events at medium-term follow-up (odds ratio 1.1, 95% confidence interval 1.03-1.15, P\u200a=\u200a0.02).
CONCLUSION:These data show a strong and significant correlation between plasma aldosterone levels at admission for myocardial infarction and fatal and nonfatal adverse events. Aldosterone appears to be a main marker of adverse clinical outcome, in accordance with the literature. These data suggest the need to identify whether antialdosteronic drug treatment, applied acutely in patients with aldosterone elevation, can influence favorably the prognosis of patients with myocardial infarction
Parameterisation of the chemical effects of sprites in the middle atmosphere
Transient luminous events, such as red sprites, occur in the middle atmosphere in the electric field above thunderstorms. We here address the question whether these processes may be a significant source of odd nitrogen and affect ozone or other important trace species. A well-established coupled ion-neutral chemical model has been extended for this purpose and applied together with estimated rates of ionisation, excitation and dissociation based on spectroscopic ratios from ISUAL on FORMOSAT-2. This approach is used to estimate the NO<sub>x</sub> and ozone changes for two type cases. <br><br> The NO<sub>x</sub> enhancements are at most one order of magnitude in the streamers, which means a production of at most 10 mol per event, or (given a global rate of occurrence of three events per minute) some 150&ndash;1500 kg per day. The present study therefore indicates that sprites are insignificant as a global source of NO<sub>x</sub>. Local effects on ozone are also negligible, but the local enhancement of NO<sub>x</sub> may be significant, up to 5 times the minimum background at 70 km in extraordinary cases
Tuning gaps and phases of a two-subband system in a quantizing magnetic field
In this work we study the properties of a two-subband quasi-two-dimensional
electron system in a strong magnetic field when the electron filling factor is
equal to four. When the cyclotron energy is close to the intersubband splitting
the system can be mapped onto a four-level electron system with an effective
filling factor of two. The ground state is either a ferromagnetic state or a
spin-singlet state, depending on the values of the inter-level splitting and
Zeeman energy. The boundaries between these phases are strongly influenced by
the inter-electron interaction. A significant exchange-mediated enhancement of
the excitation gap results in the suppression of the electron-phonon
interaction. The rate of absorption of non-equilibrium phonons is calculated as
a function of Zeeman energy and inter-subband splitting. The phonon absorption
rate has two peaks as a function of intersubband splitting and has a step-like
structure as a function of Zeeman energy
Physically based modeling of rainfall-triggered landslides: a case study in the Luquillo forest, Puerto Rico
This paper presents the development of a rainfall-triggered landslide module within an existing physically based spatially distributed ecohydrologic model. The model, tRIBS-VEGGIE (Triangulated Irregular Networks-based Real-time Integrated Basin Simulator and Vegetation Generator for Interactive Evolution), is capable of a sophisticated description of many hydrological processes; in particular, the soil moisture dynamics are resolved at a temporal and spatial resolution required to examine the triggering mechanisms of rainfall-induced landslides. The validity of the tRIBS-VEGGIE model to a tropical environment is shown with an evaluation of its performance against direct observations made within the study area of Luquillo Forest.
The newly developed landslide module builds upon the previous version of the tRIBS landslide component. This new module utilizes a numerical solution to the Richards' equation (present in tRIBS-VEGGIE but not in tRIBS), which better represents the time evolution of soil moisture transport through the soil column. Moreover, the new landslide module utilizes an extended formulation of the factor of safety (FS) to correctly quantify the role of matric suction in slope stability and to account for unsaturated conditions in the evaluation of FS.
The new modeling framework couples the capabilities of the detailed hydrologic model to describe soil moisture dynamics with the infinite slope model, creating a powerful tool for the assessment of rainfall-triggered landslide risk.United States. Arctium lappa contributes to the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus by regulating glucose homeostasis and improving oxidative stress: A critical review of in vitro and in vivo animal-based studies
Diabetes is a metabolic disease highly widespread worldwide, and the most common form is the type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A large number of synthetic drugs are currently available for the treatment of diabetes; however, they present various side effects and, for this reason, people are increasingly inclined to search natural alternative treatments. Among these, Arctium lappa (A. lappa) has interesting anti-diabetic activities, exerted by improving glucose homeostasis and reducing insulin-resistance. In addition, A. lappa exerts a marked antioxidant activity, an effect known to play a pivotal role in the treatment of T2DM. The purpose of this review is to analyse scientific evidence in order to evaluate the role of A. lappa and its bioactive compounds in management of T2DM. The literature search performed provided only in vitro and animal-based studies. No clinical studies have been conducted in order to investigate the effect of A. lappa on T2DM patients. However, available literature provides evidence for further clinical trials in order to confirm these claimed activities on humans
