Dental health status of Hong Kong preschool children
Objectives. To describe the dental health status of preschool children in Hong Kong, and to investigate the e!ects of selected socio-demographic factors and oral health–related behaviors on the dental health of the children. Methods. The study population was Chinese preschool children. The sampling frame was kindergartens with an enrolment of 70 children or more, located on Hong Kong Island. Through strati'ed random sampling, 12 kindergartens were selected. All children attending grades 1 and 2 in the kindergartens were invited. Children with parental consent were clinically examined in the kindergartens in March 2007 by one of two calibrated examiners using a disposable mouth-mirror attached to an intraoral LED light and a ball-ended probe. Diagnostic criteria for dental caries followed those recommended by the World Health Organization. A questionnaire on the child’s socio-demographic background and oral health–related behaviors was completed by the parents. Results. A total of 1513 children were invited and 1343 (89%) were examined. Their mean (standard deviation) age was 3.9 (0.7) years and 51% were boys. Around one third (35%) of the children had experienced dental caries. The mean decayed, missing or 'lled teeth (dmft) score was 1.5, increasing from 1.2 at age 3 to 2.0 at age 5 (analysis of variance, P=0.016). Active decay (dt) accounted for 90% of the dmft score. Higher dmft scores were found in children who were born in Mainland China or came from lower socio-economic classes. Children who had poorer dietary or toothbrushing habits also had more dental caries. Conclusion. Prevalence of dental caries among the Hong Kong preschool children was not high but the severity of caries varied with the children’s socio-demographic background, and their dietary and toothbrushing habits.published_or_final_versio
Institutional risk factors for norovirus outbreaks in Hong Kong elderly homes: a retrospective cohort study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Most of the institutional outbreaks of norovirus in Hong Kong occur in elderly homes, the proportion being 69% in 2006. Residents in elderly homes are a special population seriously affected by norovirus infections, it is necessary to investigate the risk factors of the norovirus outbreaks in Hong Kong elderly homes at the facility level.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cohort of 748 elderly homes was followed up from January 2005 to December 2007; each elderly home was treated as one observation unit and the outcome event was the norovirus outbreak. Cox regression models were fitted to estimate the rate ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for the potential risk factors.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 276 norovirus outbreaks were confirmed during the study period; the outbreak rate was 12.2 (95% CI: 9.9-14.6) per 100 home-years; elderly homes with a larger capacity (RR = 1.4, 95% CI: 1.3-1.5 (per 30-resident increment)), a higher staff-to-resident ratio (RR = 1.2, 95% CI: 1.1-1.3 (per 1/30 increment) and better wheelchair accessibility (RR = 2.0, 95% CI: 1.3-3.2) were found to have an elevated norovirus outbreak rate in Hong Kong elderly homes; Elderly homes with partitions between beds had a lower rate of norovirus outbreaks (RR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.4-0.8).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Elderly home capacity, staff-to-resident ratio and wheelchair accessibility were risk factors for norovirus outbreaks in Hong Kong elderly homes. Partitions between beds were a protective factor of norovirus outbreaks. These results should be considered in the infection control in Hong Kong elderly homes.</p

EEF2 Analysis Challenges the Monophyly of Archaeplastida and Chromalveolata
BACKGROUND: Classification of eukaryotes provides a fundamental phylogenetic framework for ecological, medical, and industrial research. In recent years eukaryotes have been classified into six major supergroups: Amoebozoa, Archaeplastida, Chromalveolata, Excavata, Opisthokonta, and Rhizaria. According to this supergroup classification, Archaeplastida and Chromalveolata each arose from a single plastid-generating endosymbiotic event involving a cyanobacterium (Archaeplastida) or red alga (Chromalveolata). Although the plastids within members of the Archaeplastida and Chromalveolata share some features, no nucleocytoplasmic synapomorphies supporting these supergroups are currently known. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This study was designed to test the validity of the Archaeplastida and Chromalveolata through the analysis of nucleus-encoded eukaryotic translation elongation factor 2 (EEF2) and cytosolic heat-shock protein of 70 kDa (HSP70) sequences generated from the glaucophyte Cyanophora paradoxa, the cryptophytes Goniomonas truncata and Guillardia theta, the katablepharid Leucocryptos marina, the rhizarian Thaumatomonas sp. and the green alga Mesostigma viride. The HSP70 phylogeny was largely unresolved except for certain well-established groups. In contrast, EEF2 phylogeny recovered many well-established eukaryotic groups and, most interestingly, revealed a well-supported clade composed of cryptophytes, katablepharids, haptophytes, rhodophytes, and Viridiplantae (green algae and land plants). This clade is further supported by the presence of a two amino acid signature within EEF2, which appears to have arisen from amino acid replacement before the common origin of these eukaryotic groups. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Our EEF2 analysis strongly refutes the monophyly of the Archaeplastida and the Chromalveolata, adding to a growing body of evidence that limits the utility of these supergroups. In view of EEF2 phylogeny and other morphological evidence, we discuss the possibility of an alternative eukaryotic supergroup
Advances in structure elucidation of small molecules using mass spectrometry
The structural elucidation of small molecules using mass spectrometry plays an important role in modern life sciences and bioanalytical approaches. This review covers different soft and hard ionization techniques and figures of merit for modern mass spectrometers, such as mass resolving power, mass accuracy, isotopic abundance accuracy, accurate mass multiple-stage MS(n) capability, as well as hybrid mass spectrometric and orthogonal chromatographic approaches. The latter part discusses mass spectral data handling strategies, which includes background and noise subtraction, adduct formation and detection, charge state determination, accurate mass measurements, elemental composition determinations, and complex data-dependent setups with ion maps and ion trees. The importance of mass spectral library search algorithms for tandem mass spectra and multiple-stage MS(n) mass spectra as well as mass spectral tree libraries that combine multiple-stage mass spectra are outlined. The successive chapter discusses mass spectral fragmentation pathways, biotransformation reactions and drug metabolism studies, the mass spectral simulation and generation of in silico mass spectra, expert systems for mass spectral interpretation, and the use of computational chemistry to explain gas-phase phenomena. A single chapter discusses data handling for hyphenated approaches including mass spectral deconvolution for clean mass spectra, cheminformatics approaches and structure retention relationships, and retention index predictions for gas and liquid chromatography. The last section reviews the current state of electronic data sharing of mass spectra and discusses the importance of software development for the advancement of structure elucidation of small molecules
Talon cusp in the primary dentition: Literature review and report of three rare cases
This paper reviews the nomenclature, prevalence, definition, etiology, association with other dental anomalies, diagnosis and treatment planning of talon cusp in the primary anterior teeth. Most of the reported cases have involved the primary maxillary central incisors. However, talon cusps on the primary maxillary lateral incisors are associated with high percentages of anomalies in the permanent successors. This paper reported three such rare cases and dentists should be aware of such additional anomalies.link_to_subscribed_fulltex
