Higgs compositeness in gauge theories --- Resymplecticisation, scale setting and topology
As part of an ongoing programme to study gauge theories as
potential realisations of composite Higgs models, we consider the case of
on the lattice, both as a pure gauge theory, and with two
Dirac fermion flavors in the fundamental representation. In order to compare
results between these two cases and maintain control of lattice artefacts, we
make use of the gradient flow to set the scale of the simulations. We present
some technical aspects of the simulations, including preliminary results for
the scale setting in the two cases and results for the topological charge

Nonclassicality of photon-added squeezed vacuum and its decoherence in thermal environment
We study the nonclassicality of photon-added squeezed vacuum (PASV) and its
decoherence in thermal environment in terms of the sub-Poissonian statistics
and the negativity of Wigner function (WF). By converting the PASV to a
squeezed Hermite polynomial excitation state, we derive a compact expression
for the normalization factor of m-PASV, which is an m-order Legendre polynomial
of squeezing parameter r. We also derive the explicit expression of WF of
m-PASV and find the negative region of WF in phase space. We show that there is
an upper bound value of r for this state to exhibit sub-Poissonian statistics
increasing as m increases. Then we derive the explicit analytical expression of
time evolution of WF of m-PASV in the thermal channel and discuss the loss of
nonclassicality using the negativity of WF. The threshold value of decay time

Status of GRB Observations with the Suzaku Wideband All-sky Monitor
The Wide-band All-sky Monitor (WAM) is a function of the large lateral BGO
shield of the Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) onboard Suzaku. Its large geometrical
area of 800 cm^2 per side, the large stopping power for the hard X-rays and the
wide-field of view make the WAM an ideal detector for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)
observations in the energy range of 50-5000 keV. In fact, the WAM has observed

The US National Cholesterol Education Programme Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in a Chinese population
To assess the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome disease cluster in the Hong Kong Chinese population we applied the US National Cholesterol Education Programme Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP ATP III) guidelines. This was present if ≥3 of the following conditions were present: Hypertension (≥130/85 mmHg); fasting plasma glucose was ≥6.1 mmol/L; fasting plasma triglycerides ≥1.69 mmol/L; fasting HDL-cholesterol 88 or 102 cm (Asian WHO criteria ≥80 or 90 cm) in females and males, respectively. A total of 16.7% (17.1 (95%CI 15.7-18.5)% age and gender-adjusted) of the 2893 subjects had the metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of having at least 2, 3, 4 or 5 components was 34.5, 16.7, 6.4 and 1.4%, respectively. The prevalence increased from 3.1% in those aged 25-29 years to 41.0% in those aged over 70 years. Using the 2001 Census, 880,499 Hong Kong residents would have the metabolic syndrome. If the WHO recommended waist circumference for Asians is used, the age and gender-adjusted prevalence is significantly higher at 21.2% (21.9 (95%CI 20.4-23.4)%). In summary, the high prevalence of the metabolic syndrome in adult Hong Kong Chinese, particularly in the elderly, forewarns a rapidly increasing problem in Mainland China, and other Asian populations, which may have overwhelming public health ramifications. © 2004 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. PPAR? Downregulation by TGF in Fibroblast and Impaired Expression and Function in Systemic Sclerosis: A Novel Mechanism for Progressive Fibrogenesis
The nuclear orphan receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) is expressed in multiple cell types in addition to adipocytes. Upon its activation by natural ligands such as fatty acids and eicosanoids, or by synthetic agonists such as rosiglitazone, PPAR-γ regulates adipogenesis, glucose uptake and inflammatory responses. Recent studies establish a novel role for PPAR-γ signaling as an endogenous mechanism for regulating transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß)- dependent fibrogenesis. Here, we sought to characterize PPAR-γ function in the prototypic fibrosing disorder systemic sclerosis (SSc), and delineate the factors governing PPAR-γ expression. We report that PPAR-γ levels were markedly diminished in skin and lung biopsies from patients with SSc, and in fibroblasts explanted from the lesional skin. In normal fibroblasts, treatment with TGF-ß resulted in a time- and dose-dependent down-regulation of PPAR-γ expression. Inhibition occurred at the transcriptional level and was mediated via canonical Smad signal transduction. Genome-wide expression profiling of SSc skin biopsies revealed a marked attenuation of PPAR-γ levels and transcriptional activity in a subset of patients with diffuse cutaneous SSc, which was correlated with the presence of a ''TGF-ß responsive gene signature'' in these biopsies. Together, these results demonstrate that the expression and function of PPAR-γ are impaired in SSc, and reveal the existence of a reciprocal inhibitory cross-talk between TGF-ß activation and PPAR-γ signaling in the context of fibrogenesis. In light of the potent anti-fibrotic effects attributed to PPAR-γ, these observations lead us to propose that excessive TGF-ß activity in SSc accounts for impaired PPAR-γ function, which in turn contributes to unchecked fibroblast activation and progressive fibrosis. © 2010 Wei et al
