Machinery Transportation Management: Case Study of 'Plant-trailer' H&S Incidents
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate causal agents of health and safety (H&S)incidents among “plant-trailers” (as used by construction and utility contractors to transport mechanical machinery); including the relationship(s) of such incidents to routine safety inspections and, plant maintenance functions.
Design/methodology/approach – H&S plant-trailer incident data, from a collaborating UK-based case study utility company are analysed using inductive, interpretative and descriptive statistical methods.
Findings – Principal incident occurrences relate to trailer wheels, wheel bearings, tyres and braking systems. All forms of incidents observed harbour significant risk and especially, if they occur during travel on public highways. Derived recommendations for incident mitigation and Control, suggest a requirement for improved human behaviour, machinery inspection regimes and maintenance systems.
Research limitations/implications – The findings will be valuable to academia as a basis for advancing this new research subject, both empirically and internationally. Direction is offered in this respect.
Practical implications – Recommendations will be of practical relevance to machinery management practitioners generally and to plant-trailer stakeholders more Specifically. For the latter, the study encourages introspective consideration of plant-trailer H&S systems.
Originality/value – No previous research has targeted these issues relating to plant-trailers.

Exchange, Conflict and Coercion: The Ritual Dynamics of the Notting Hill Carnival Past and Present
This study investigates patterns of social relationships involving the Notting Hill Carnival. Two theoretical approaches are employed elementary relations theory and structural ritualization theory - to explain how the carnival has been strategically used in very different ways by various groups to accomplish their objectives. We suggest the Notting Hill Carnival is a special collective ritual event that has played a crucial role in three quite different structured arrangements involving coercion, conflict, and exchange since its beginning in Trinidad and subsequently in London. Four time periods where distinct changes in the nature of these relationships have occurred are examined: (1) 1800s Trinidad; (2) the Notting Hill Carnival from 1965-1970; (3) the Notting Hill Carnival from 1971-1989; and (4) the Notting Hill Carnival from 1990-present. This study contributes to the existing literature by focusing on how ritual and these types of relationships are intertwined in the production of the carnival. Implications of this research and possible directions for future research are also discussed
A model-driven method for the systematic literature review of qualitative empirical research
This paper explores a model-driven method for systematic literature reviews (SLRs), for use where the empirical studies found in the literature search are based on qualitative research. SLRs are an important component of the evidence-based practice (EBP) paradigm, which is receiving increasing attention in information systems (IS) but has not yet been widely-adopted. We illustrate the model-driven approach to SLRs via an example focused on the use of BPMN (Business Process Modelling Notation) in organizations. We discuss in detail the process followed in using the model-driven SLR method, and show how it is based on a hermeneutic cycle of reading and interpreting, in order to develop and refine a model which synthesizes the research findings of previous qualitative studies. This study can serve as an exemplar for other researchers wishing to carry out model-driven SLRs. We conclude with our reflections on the method and some suggestions for further researc

The effective two-dimensional phase space of cosmological scalar fields
It has been shown by Remmen and Carroll that, for a model universe which
contains only a kinetically canonical scalar field minimally coupled to gravity
it is possible to choose 'special coordinates' to describe a two-dimensional
effective phase space. The special, non-canonical, coordinates are
, and the ability to describe an effective phase space with
these coordinates empowers the common usage of as the space
to define inflationary initial conditions. This paper extends the result to the
full Horndeski action. The existence of a two-dimensional effective phase space
is shown for the general case. Subsets of the Horndeski action, relevant to
cosmology are considered as particular examples to highlight important aspects
of the procedure.Comment: Updated with corrections from journal report, 11 pages, 2 figure
