The Diaspora of Korean Children: A Cross-Cultural Study of the Educational Crisis in Contemporary South Korea
The diaspora of Korean children first started after the Korean War in the 1950s. Abandoned by their impoverished mothers and shunned by society, many orphan children were sent abroad for adoption, which was the best, if not the only, available solution at the time. Half a century later, South Korea today is no longer a desperately poor country, and yet an increasing number of young children are still being sent abroad. The exodus of children, termed as the diaspora of Korean children in this study, is an out-of-country solution chosen by both students and parents in response to an educational dilemma in Korea, which signifies the urgent issues of public education in the increasingly globalized world today. By anchoring the educational crisis in contemporary South Korea in historical and cultural contexts, a primary purpose of this interdisciplinary study is to explore the seeming contradiction between the remarkable successes of Korean education, in particular its role in Korea\u27s remarkable social and economic transformation, and its fundamental weaknesses. Its historical and cultural background, including the experience of war, provides context for understanding the phenomena of Korean society manifested in the expressions such as parachute kids, wild geese families, cuckoo mommies and penguin daddies. This study also investigates the relevance of Confucian values in explaining Korea\u27s educational crisis today. It places Korea\u27s cultural underpinnings and complex historical experience in the context of the quest for modernization. Some critics blame Confucianism as the main culprit for the educational crisis today. But others disagree and argue that, despite its excesses and rigid applications in the past, Confucianism holds promise for addressing some of the problems of modern society. By reevaluating the efficacy of Confucian values in contemporary Korean society and in particular its complex and even conflicting interpretations in justifying competing models of education, this study addresses the question that many societies are facing today, including the United States, At what cost, education
No Evidence of a Drug-Drug Interaction Between Letermovir (MK-8228) and Mycophenolate Mofetil
Introduction:
Letermovir (MK-8228) is a potent, oncedaily inhibitor of the cytomegalovirus (CMV) terminase complex that is being developed for the prophylaxis of CMV infection in transplant patients. This study evaluated the pharmacokinetic interactions, safety, and tolerability of letermovir when coadministered in healthy subjects with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF), which is the morpholinoethyl ester prodrug of mycophenolic acid (MPA).
Methods:
This was an open-label trial in 14 healthy female subjects that explored the pharmacokinetic parameters of a single 1 g oral dose of MMF administered alone on Day 1 and coadministered on Day 12 with 480 mg oral once-daily letermovir given on Day 5 and from Day 8 continued through Day 16. Letermovir PK was assessed at single dose (Day 5) and at steady state on Day 12 (with MMF) and Day 16 (alone following MMF washout).
Results:
Coadministration of 480 mg qd letermovir at steady state with a single dose of 1 g of MMF had no effect on the pharmacokinetics of MPA. The MPA AUC0-inf and Cmax geometric mean ratios (GMRs) [90% confidence interval] for the comparison (MMF with letermovir/ MMF alone) were 1.08 [0.96, 1.21] and 0.96 [0.81, 1.13], respectively. Coadministration of a single dose of 1 g MMF with 480 mg qd letermovir at steady state had no clinically meaningful effect on the pharmacokinetics of letermovir, with AUC0-24 and Cmax GMR of 1.18 [1.04, 1.32] and 1.11 [0.93, 1.34], respectively. The letermovir geometric mean accumulation ratio (Day 16/Day 5) and 95% CI were 1.13 [0.90, 1.42] for AUC0-24 and 1.01 [ 0.79, 1.28] f or Cmax, indicating that accumulation of letermovir when administered as daily doses is minimal. All related AEs were reported as mild in severity and resolved.
Conclusions:
Multiple-dose administration of 480 mg letermovir daily with a single dose of 1 g MMF was generally well tolerated by the healthy subjects in this study. Coadministration of letermovir and MMF had no clinically meaningful effect on the PK of letermovir or MPA. Letermovir and MMF may be coadministered without dose adjustment

Hair Growth Is Induced by Blockade of Macrophage-derived Oncostatin M and Downstream Jak-stat5 Signaling in Hair Follicle Stem Cells
Our lab recently described a role for JAK-STAT signaling in the maintenance of quiescence during the murine hair cycle. Research into signaling pathways and cytokines/growth factors involved in the mammalian hair cycle has not focused extensively on the JAK-STAT pathway. In this thesis, I investigated the upstream effector(s) and downstream mechanisms of JAK-STAT signaling in the HFSC during telogen, using a variety of methods, including murine conditional mutants of the JAK-STAT pathway, pharmacological and immunological techniques. The mechanism through which OSM exerts this effect is via JAK-STAT5 signaling downstream of the OSM receptor, which is antagonized by pharmacological JAK inhibition. Conditional epidermal ablation of OSMR or STAT5 during early- and mid-telogen (P42 – P60) shortens the telogen phase significantly, and inhibition of macrophages by way of neutralizing antibodies, small molecule inhibitors, and genetic ablation (with Csf1r-CreER::R26-iDTR mice) during telogen also promotes hair growth. Single-cell RNA sequencing of dermal immune cells across murine telogen identified a distinct subset of TREM2+ macrophages that are enriched for OSM, and gene-set analysis suggests these “trichophages” are similar to the microglia of the central nervous system. I show that this distinct subset of TREM2+ macrophages predominate during early- and mid-telogen, where they produce Oncostatin M (OSM), which is sufficient to maintain quiescence of hair follicle stem cells (HFSCs). Proliferation of HFSCs and hair growth is associated with depletion of this subset of TREM2+ macrophages. Interestingly, macrophage markers and OSM were found to be upregulated in the balding scalp of males with androgenetic alopecia, suggesting that this mechanism is physiologically relevant in the control of human hair cycling
Voronoi-Delaunay analysis of normal modes in a simple model glass
We combine a conventional harmonic analysis of vibrations in a one-atomic
model glass of soft spheres with a Voronoi-Delaunay geometrical analysis of the
structure. ``Structure potentials'' (tetragonality, sphericity or perfectness)
are introduced to describe the shape of the local atomic configurations
(Delaunay simplices) as function of the atomic coordinates. Apart from the
highest and lowest frequencies the amplitude weighted ``structure potential''
varies only little with frequency. The movement of atoms in soft modes causes
transitions between different ``perfect'' realizations of local structure. As
for the potential energy a dynamic matrix can be defined for the ``structure
potential''. Its expectation value with respect to the vibrational modes
increases nearly linearly with frequency and shows a clear indication of the
boson peak. The structure eigenvectors of this dynamical matrix are strongly
correlated to the vibrational ones. Four subgroups of modes can be
distinguished
Academic Performance and Behavioral Patterns
Identifying the factors that influence academic performance is an essential
part of educational research. Previous studies have documented the importance
of personality traits, class attendance, and social network structure. Because
most of these analyses were based on a single behavioral aspect and/or small
sample sizes, there is currently no quantification of the interplay of these
factors. Here, we study the academic performance among a cohort of 538
undergraduate students forming a single, densely connected social network. Our
work is based on data collected using smartphones, which the students used as
their primary phones for two years. The availability of multi-channel data from
a single population allows us to directly compare the explanatory power of
individual and social characteristics. We find that the most informative
indicators of performance are based on social ties and that network indicators
result in better model performance than individual characteristics (including
both personality and class attendance). We confirm earlier findings that class
attendance is the most important predictor among individual characteristics.
Finally, our results suggest the presence of strong homophily and/or peer
effects among university students
Ultrafast 3d spin-echo acquisition improves gadolinium-enhanced mri signal contrast enhancement
Long scan times of 3D volumetric MR acquisitions usually necessitate ultrafast in vivo gradient-echo acquisitions, which are intrinsically susceptible to magnetic field inhomogeneities. This is especially problematic for contrast-enhanced (CE)-MRI applications, where non-negligible T 2 & z.ast; effect of contrast agent deteriorates the positive signal contrast and limits the available range of MR acquisition parameters and injection doses. To overcome these shortcomings without degrading temporal resolution, ultrafast spin-echo acquisitions were implemented. Specifically, a multiplicative acceleration factor from multiple spin echoes (??32) and compressed sensing (CS) sampling (??8) allowed highly-accelerated 3D Multiple-Modulation- Multiple-Echo (MMME) acquisition. At the same time, the CE-MRI of kidney with Gd-DOTA showed significantly improved signal enhancement for CS-MMME acquisitions (??7) over that of corresponding FLASH acquisitions (??2). Increased positive contrast enhancement and highly accelerated acquisition of extended volume with reduced RF irradiations will be beneficial for oncological and nephrological applications, in which the accurate in vivo 3D quantification of contrast agent concentration is necessary with high temporal resolution.open0
Parent-of-origin-specific allelic associations among 106 genomic loci for age at menarche.
Age at menarche is a marker of timing of puberty in females. It varies widely between individuals, is a heritable trait and is associated with risks for obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and all-cause mortality. Studies of rare human disorders of puberty and animal models point to a complex hypothalamic-pituitary-hormonal regulation, but the mechanisms that determine pubertal timing and underlie its links to disease risk remain unclear. Here, using genome-wide and custom-genotyping arrays in up to 182,416 women of European descent from 57 studies, we found robust evidence (P < 5 × 10(-8)) for 123 signals at 106 genomic loci associated with age at menarche. Many loci were associated with other pubertal traits in both sexes, and there was substantial overlap with genes implicated in body mass index and various diseases, including rare disorders of puberty. Menarche signals were enriched in imprinted regions, with three loci (DLK1-WDR25, MKRN3-MAGEL2 and KCNK9) demonstrating parent-of-origin-specific associations concordant with known parental expression patterns. Pathway analyses implicated nuclear hormone receptors, particularly retinoic acid and γ-aminobutyric acid-B2 receptor signalling, among novel mechanisms that regulate pubertal timing in humans. Our findings suggest a genetic architecture involving at least hundreds of common variants in the coordinated timing of the pubertal transition
Search for Second-Generation Scalar Leptoquarks in Collisions at =1.96 TeV
Results on a search for pair production of second generation scalar
leptoquark in collisions at =1.96 TeV are reported. The
data analyzed were collected by the CDF detector during the 2002-2003 Tevatron
Run II and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 198 pb. Leptoquarks
(LQ) are sought through their decay into (charged) leptons and quarks, with
final state signatures represented by two muons and jets and one muon, large
transverse missing energy and jets. We observe no evidence for production
and derive 95% C.L. upper limits on the production cross sections as well
as lower limits on their mass as a function of , where is the

Anharmonicity, vibrational instability and Boson peak in glasses
We show that a {\em vibrational instability} of the spectrum of weakly
interacting quasi-local harmonic modes creates the maximum in the inelastic
scattering intensity in glasses, the Boson peak. The instability, limited by
anharmonicity, causes a complete reconstruction of the vibrational density of
states (DOS) below some frequency , proportional to the strength of
interaction. The DOS of the new {\em harmonic modes} is independent of the
actual value of the anharmonicity. It is a universal function of frequency
depending on a single parameter -- the Boson peak frequency, which
is a function of interaction strength. The excess of the DOS over the Debye
value is at low frequencies and linear in in the
interval . Our results are in an excellent

A comparison of the physical and chemical differences between cancellous and cortical bovine bone mineral at two ages
To assess possible differences between the mineral phases of cortical and cancellous bone, the structure and composition of isolated bovine mineral crystals from young (1–3 months) and old (4–5 years) postnatal bovine animals were analyzed by a variety of complementary techniques: chemical analyses, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and 31P solid-state magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). This combination of methods represents the most complete physicochemical characterization of cancellous and cortical bone mineral completed thus far. Spectra obtained from XRD, FTIR, and 31P NMR all confirmed that the mineral was calcium phosphate in the form of carbonated apatite; however, a crystal maturation process was evident between the young and old and between cancellous and cortical mineral crystals. Two-way analyses of variance showed larger
increases of crystal size and Ca/P ratio for the cortical vs. cancellous bone of 1–3 month than the 4–5 year animals.
The Ca/(P + CO3) remained nearly constant within a given
bone type and in both bone types at 4–5 years. The carbonate
and phosphate FTIR band ratios revealed a decrease of labile ions with age and in cortical, relative to cancellous, bone. Overall, the same aging or maturation trends were observed for young vs. old and cancellous vs. cortical. Based on the larger proportion of newly formed bone in cancellous bone relative to cortical bone, the major differences between the cancellous and cortical mineral crystals must be ascribed to differences in average age of the crystals
